  • 22、At first, I didn’t recognize the symptoms that we all had in common. Friends mentioned that they were having trouble concentrating. It wasn’t burnout — we still had energy. It wasn’t depression — we didn’t feel hopeless. We just felt somewhat joyless and aimless.

It turns out there’s a name for that: languishing.

Languishing is a sense of inactivity and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling (应付) through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield (挡风玻璃).

In psychology, we think about mental health on a spectrum (范围) from depression to flourishing (精力旺盛). Flourishing is the peak of well-being. Depression is the valley of ill-being. Languishing is the neglected middle child of mental health. It’s the emptiness between depression and flourishing — the absence of well-being. You’re not functioning at full capacity. Languishing dulls your motivation, disrupts your ability to focus, and greatly increases the possibility that you’ll cut back on work.

Part of the danger is that when you’re languishing, you might not notice the dulling of delight or the decreasing of drive. You don’t catch yourself slipping slowly into aloneness; you’re indifferent to your indifference. When you can’t see your own suffering, you don’t seek help or even do much to help yourself.

So what can we do about it? People who became more focused on their work managed to avoid languishing. Interrupted attention is an enemy of engagement and excellence. To go beyond languishing, give yourself some uninterrupted time. It clears out constant distractions (分心) and gives us the freedom to focus. And try starting with small wins by focusing on a challenge that matters to you – an interesting project, a worthwhile goal, or a meaningful conversation.

We still have a lot to learn about what causes languishing and how to cure it, but naming it might be a first step. It could help to defog our vision, giving us a clearer window into what had been an unclear experience. It could remind us that we weren’t alone: languishing is common and shared.

By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the emptiness.

【1】Which definition best suits the word “languishing”?

    A.Feeling exhausted and without hope.

B.Becoming weaker or failing to improve.

C.Making someone want to achieve something.

D.Going beyond the usual limits of something.

【2】Which of the following can be described as languishing?

A.Seeking help when you are suffering.

B.Realizing that you are not alone in despair.

    C.Giving yourself some uninterrupted time.

D.Being indifferent to your lack of enthusiasm.

【3】What could psychologists do to help solve the problems of languishing?

    A.Give people more freedom.

    B.See it as depression.

    C.Name it clearly.

    D.Remove it from a spectrum.

【4】Why is it significant to know languishing is common and shared?

A.We can let the silent despair speak up and find a way out.

B.We can continue to learn more about languishing.

C.We can see it as basically the same as depression.

D.We can study it as the complete opposite of flourishing.

  • 23、China launches Shenzhou 13 astronauts on historic mission to new space station

The nation’s Shenzhou 13 spacecraft was launched from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert today , rising off the pad (发射台) atop (在……顶上) a Long March 2F rocket at 00:23 Oct. 16 local time.

Shenzhou 13 and its three passengers — commander Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu — are headed toward Tianhe, the core module (舱) of the Tiangong space station that China is building in low Earth orbit.

After reaching orbit, Zhai reported the crew was doing fine and all systems were nominal .

Tianhe has only been aloft (在高空中) since April, but the module has already hosted one crewed visit — Shenzhou 12, which was launched in June and returned to Earth last month. The three-month mission was China’s longest-duration human spaceflight to date, but Shenzhou 13 will wreck that record, racking up six months aboard Tianhe (“Harmony of the Heavens”).

Shenzhou 13 will break new ground in another way as well: Wang will become the first woman to live aboard the core module. (The Shenzhou 12 crewmembers were all men.)

This is the second spaceflight for the 41-year-old Wang. She also flew on Shenzhou 10, which visited China’s Tiangong 1 prototype (雏形;原型) space lab for two weeks in 2013.

Zhai, 55, is also a spaceflight veteran (经验丰富的人), having served on the Shenzhou 7 mission in 2008. During that three-day flight, he conducted China’s first-ever spacewalk.

Shenzhou 13 is the first spaceflight for Ye, who is 41.

Zhai, Wang and Ye will be busy during their six months in orbit. They’ll spend a lot of time testing and validating (证实;确认) technologies that will allow China to finish construction of the new space station, which is called Tiangong (“Heavenly Palace”). That station will consist of three modules; the other two are expected to launch toward the 54-foot-long (16.6 meters) Tianhe next year.

    【1】Who conducted China’s first-ever spacewalk?

    A.Yang Liwei

    B.Wang Yaping

    C.Zhai Zhigang

    D.Ye Guangfu

【2】Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A.The Shenzhou 12 crewmembers were all men.

B.This isn’t the first spaceflight for the 55-year-old Zhai.

C.This is the second spaceflight for the 41-year-old Wang.

D.Shenzhou 13 is the second spaceflight for Ye.

【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined words?

    A.break

    B.crash

    C.destroy

    D.damage

【4】The passage is probably taken from________ .

    A.a textbook

    B.a newspaper

    C.a handbook

    D.a poster in a college

  • 24、The Spring Festival is supposed to be a period of time entirely for family reunion. However, as peoples enthusiasm for digital hongbao increased, the amount of the time they spend with family members during the holiday decreases. There has been widespread criticism(批评) over digital hongbao that it has alienated family reunion.

I used to discuss programs in the Spring Festival Gala(春晚) with my family members, but this year, I hardly had the time to watch the gala because I was staring at my cellphone all the time, said Kang, a 30year old radio station editor. I went to Karaoke with my cousins during the holiday, and I was grasping digital hongbao the whole time, even when I was singing Karaoke.

On the last day of the holiday, I started to regret spending too much time on these digital hongbao. Therefore, instead of fighting for hongbao, I watched TV with my mom that night. I left home feeling sorry! I should have spent more time with my parents.

But Kang said regret came with a sense of achievement when he managed to bring classmates together.

Next year, I will still play the game, but with less money and for a smaller amount of time, Kang said.

Dong Chenyu, a teacher from Beijing Foreign Studies University, said it unfair to blame hongbao for destroying family reunion.

When television was invented, people accused it of standing in the way of face-to-face human communication. The same accusation came up on telephone and text message services when they were first invented. The same goes with digital hongbao, Dong said.

It does nothing but offers a new way of human communication. The rest is peoples choice. As long as no one expects to earn money from this and takes this as a means of gambling(赌博), its a good way to improve human connections, Dong said.

1The underlined word alienated in Paragraph 1 most probably means ________.

    A. separated   B. reserved   C. encouraged     D. improved

2How did Mr.Kang feel about digital hongbao according to Paragraph 2?

    A. He felt regretted in spending too much money.

    B. He had a strong preference for it.

    C. He was happy to spend too much of his time.

    D. He felt a sense of guilty in getting it.

3What can we infer from what Mr. Dong said about digital hongbao ________.

    A. it will bring us trouble in holiday reunion

    B. it will be out of fashion soon in future

    C. Mr. Dong is in favor of the digital hongbao

    D. lots of people will use it to earn money

4Whats mainly described in the passage?

    A. The Spring Festival is the best time for family reunion.

    B. Digital Hongbao is a double-edged sword.

    C. Peoples holiday enthusiasm has decreased.

    D. Digital hongbao has become a popular way to make money.
