  • 21、Some Chinese students born in the 1990’s created a microsatellite that took a stunning picture of the moon and the Earth in space, an image praised as one of the best of the two celestial bodies and one that Science magazine also used on Feb.15, 2019.

The photograph was done by the camera on Longjiang 2, a microsatellite developed by students at the Harbin Institute of Technology in Northeast China's Heilongjiang province.

Before its publication in the leading scientific journal, the picture had been widely circulated on mainstream media worldwide, with some foreign media outlets even praising it as one of the best photos of the moon and the earth so far.

Wei Mingchuan, born in 1991, was the chief designer responsible for the sub-system of Longjiang 2, a microsatellite launched last year together with Queqiao, the relay satellite for the Chang'e 4 lunar probe. Wei successfully developed LilacSat 1 -- the country's first microsatellite independently designed, developed and controlled by students -- and has been dubbed China's "youngest chief designer", despite being the oldest in his team.

Tai Mier, one of Wei's team members who was born in 1996, designed the camera on Longjiang 2 that captured the amazing picture of the moon and the Earth. Tai was only 20 years old when work on the project began.

The youngest member in the team is 20-year-old Huang Jiahe, who handled software design for the Longjiang 2 ground station. Beginning in primary school, Huang would buy all kinds of electronic components and parts. At first, he just simply disassembled and assembled the parts, but now he can design and create things. This young man, considered a genius by some, said that he is just curious and passionate about aerospace technology.

In their dormitory, aerospace-related items are everywhere. A postcard on the wall is printed with the words "we were born for our dreams", a reminder that the future has just begun for this youngest team of the Chang'e 4 mission.

  • 22、Feathers are not just for flight. They keep birds warm, and attract mates. And for one Australian bird, feathers even help produce an important sound—an alarm.

“People had long noticed these birds produced these loud sounds.” Trevor Murray, a researcher at the Australian National University said. “My supervisor Rob Magrath and May Hingee thought they were used as an alarm. So they did some playbacks and they could show quite strongly that if you play back these sounds to other birds, they flee straightaway. So I was really interested in how they produce the sound, whether it is actually a signal, and whether it’s a reliable signal.”

The team focused their experiment on specific feathers in the pigeon’s wing. “We were able to target the eighth primary feather, which is unusually narrow. And then we also removed, on different sets of birds, those neighboring feathers, the ninth primary feather and the seventh primary feather. And we were able to see when the eighth primary feather was missing, the high note had completely disappeared. So the eighth primary feather produced that high note and the ninth primary feather actually produced the low note.”

And if the birds are fleeing from danger, they produce a louder and higher sound than they do during a normal takeoff. The study is in the journal Current Biology.

Murray and his colleagues did another experiment where they used the recordings they made to observe the reactions of other pigeons. “We were able to see the unusual eighth primary feather was important for signaling the alarm. When that eighth primary feather was missing, they very rarely responded. They almost never fled. Whereas when the ninth primary produces the sound, they fled just as much as to normal alarms. This shows us this unusual primary feather is important for signaling alarm.”

That makes birds of a feather flee together.

1What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. The birds   B. Rob and May

    C. The feathers   D. The loud sounds

2What did Rob Magrath and May Hingee find out about the birds?

    A. They fly away as a group.   B. They produce different notes.

    C. They send alarms with feathers.   D. They attract mates with feathers.

3Why did the team remove different feathers?

    A. To record the notes they produce.   B. To keep the pigeons stay in cages

    C. To compare their width and length.   D. To observe other pigeons’ reactions.

4According to Murray and his colleagues, why does the unusual feathers matter most?

    A. It keeps the pigeons warm   B. It responds to alarms

    C. It helps birds fly more quickly   D. It sounds alarms of danger.

  • 23、Surprisingly, no one knows how many children receive education in English hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education. Proper records are just not kept. We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital.

Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher. A further quarter have only a part-time teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher—and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do math or number work; without a teacher they would only play games.

Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupied, and the latter is often all the teacher can do. The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”. Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work. Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school. Once back at school children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best as they can.

Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

【1】Which of the following statements is true?

    A. Every child in hospital receives some teaching.

    B. Not enough is known about hospital teaching.

    C. Hospital teaching is of poor quality.

    D. The special children's hospitals are worst off.

【2】It can be inferred from the latest survey that________.

    A. hospital teaching across the country is similar

    B. each hospital has at least one part-time teacher

    C. all hospitals surveyed offer education to children

    D. only one-fourth of the hospitals have a full-time teacher

    【3】Hospital teachers are found________.

    A. not welcomed by the children and their parents

    B. necessary

    C. not welcomed by the hospitals

    D. capable

【4】In order to catch up with their school work, children in hospital usually turn to________.

    A. hospital teachers  B. schoolmates

    C. parents   D. school teachers

【5】We can conclude from the passage that the author is________.

    A. unfavorable towards children receiving education in hospitals

    B. in favor of the present state of teaching in hospitals

    C. unsatisfied with the present state of hospital teaching

    D. satisfied with the results of the latest survey

  • 24、“Beating is a sign of affection,cursing (骂) is a sign of love.”

Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern times—with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been—but experts say they still ring true.

Today,it seems,Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to precollege military academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success.

“Good education doesn't mean letting your children enjoy privileges, especially our boys.” said Song Wenming,an entrepreneur (企业家) in Jinhua,East China's Zhejiang province. “They should be raised in tough conditions to know what to fight for in the future.”

In August,Song sent his 17yearold son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money—around $48,000 per year—to send a child to a strict military school.

Statistics show that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies.

A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28. “All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families;some of them were spoiled.” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.

Song's only son,Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult.

Now,three months later,he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism,no matter how unreasonable.

“The training is hard but I know it is good for selfdevelopment of individuals.” said Song Siyu. “The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character;they are not personal.”

But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools.

But for those who stick with it,there is a reward for all the hard work.

【1】From the second paragraph,we can know the old Chinese saying ________.

A.is out of date in modern times

    B.is disagreed by rich parents

    C.is still worth trusting

D.is deeply believed by better educated parents

【2】The underlined sentence means that ________.

A.Song sent his only son to military school,so he feels lonely

B.Song is the only one who sends his child to military school

C.there are other people sending their children to military school besides Song

D.the fee of the military school is so high that only Song can afford it

【3】Song Siyu got some achievements in the military school except ________.

    A.taking a bath in a short time

    B.improving his character

    C.taking unreasonable criticism

D.having his meal with his eyes closed

【4】Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.It's likely that more and more Chinese students will attend VFMA.

B.Most Chinese parents approve of educating their children by beating and cursing nowadays.

C.Song Siyu had no difficulty in adjusting to the life at VFMA.

D.Most Chinese students support the way of education at VFMA.
