21、Boiler rooms are often dirty and steamy, but this one is clean and cool. Fox Point is a very new 47-unit living building in South Bronx, one of the city’s poorest areas. Two-thirds of the people living there are formerly (以前) homeless people, whose rent is paid by the government. The rest are low-income families. The boiler room has special equipment, which produces energy for electricity and heat. It reuses heat that would otherwise be lost to the air, reducing carbon emissions(碳排放)while also cutting costs.
Fox Point is operated by Palladia, a group that specializes in providing housing and services to needy, people. Palladia received support from Enterprise Community Partners (ECP), which helps build affordable housing by providing support to housing developers.
ECP has created national standards for healthy, environmentally (环境方面) clever and affordable homes which are called, the Green Communities Standards. These standards include water keeping, energy saving and the use of environmentally friendly building materials. Meeting the standards increases housing construction costs by 2%, which is rapidly paid back by lower running costs. Even the positioning of a window to get most daylight can help save energy.
Michael. Bloomberg, New York's mayor, plans to create 165,000 affordable housing units for500,000 New Yorkers. Almost 80% of New York City’s greenhouse-gas emissions come from buildings, and 40% of those are caused, by housing.. So he recently announced that the city’s Department of Housing and Preservation and Development (DHPD) , whose duty is to develop and keep the city’s supply of affordable housing, will require all its new projects to follow ECP’s green standards.
Similar measures have been taken by other cities such as Cleveland and Denver, but New York’s DHPD is the largest city developer of affordable housing in the country.

22、Now a group of Italians have created the world’s first underwater garden for terrestrial plants. Called Nemo’s Garden, the project was launched by the Ocean Reef Group as a means to experiment with food supply diversity, should climatic changes make parts of Italy too dry to farm. The large self-sustaining, totally-contained biospheres would in theory be scalable, and perhaps in the future might look like the underwater city from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
The challenge existing in growing plants underwater, given that they are normally at home in soil, was but one obstacle Nemo has had to overcome. The six air-filled greenhouses suffered major storm damage in October 2019, and before they could be fully repaired, COVID-19(新冠病毒) had all the researchers sheltering in place.
Yet the team never gave up hope, as Euronews reports, and the months of abandonment did not harm the facility in any way. June 6th saw the garden fully-operational again, including their live stream where one can watch the plants grow. The biospheres(生物圏), which sit eight meters under the surface off the coast of Noli in Liguria, use solar energy for their minimal electrical needs, and evaporated seawater condenses(凝结) on the glass of the ceiling which waters the plants. A diver swims under and up into the air pocket of the pod to harvest what’s ready to eat.
The project website says that increased pressure like that found under the ocean is actually beneficial to the speed at which plants can come up, though they admit very little research has been published on the topic—after all, not so many people are currently trying to grow strawberries it underwater.
The conditions create a really intense flavor in the vegetables, and also allow the plants’ environment to be completely controlled, with nothing impacting their life dial the growers don’t want. For now Nemo’s Garden is essentially a research lab, but if tie idea were expanded, it’s expected to be able to keep food security for the peninsula, and the world.

23、Taylor has a very Forest Gump-ian view of the ocean: “You never know what you’ re going to find out there beyond the limit of your visibility.” Like Gump and his box of chocolates, Taylor, now 85 years old, holds burning curiosity for our oceans after a lifetime of swimming in them and learning about the oldest animal to still exist, the shark.
Taylor grew up on the coast of New South Wales. She began spear fishing and worked her way up in her early 20s to become one of very few women who were professional spear fishers. But as she spent more time underwater—especially with the sharks, of which she only ever killed one—she had a change of heart and decided, along with her late husband and world spear fishing champion, Ron Taylor, to hang up her spear. From that point on, she would only shoot them with her camera. Thus, the Taylors became two of the first underwater photographers and cinematographers documenting sharks.
As a pioneering shark conservationist, Taylor succeeded in many firsts throughout her life’s work. She was the first person to dive with sharks cageless, and the first person to put on a special suit to test the power of a shark bite. She was also the first to hand-feed a Great White and even pet it. Her husband was the first person in the world to film a Great White Shark swimming underwater. Together they filmed all the live-action scenes with sharks, and because the public’s reaction to the film was so full of fear, they went on countless PR (public relations) tours to help correct the malign creatures’ image.
Her research has become the basis for much of what we know about sharks today and she succeeded in becoming the first person to get Grey Nurse sharks protected in a specific area. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do to help prove that sharks are not dangerous and man-eating monsters.

24、 He has been called France’s youngest leader since Napoleon Bonaparte. Emmanuel Macron, age 39, swept to victory in France’s second-round of presidential election which was held on May 7, 2017. He defeated Marine Le Pen by a large margin of 62% of votes. He was inaugurated (就职) as President.
Both of Macron’s parents were doctors, and he attended one of the most prestigious (有声望的) schools in France, Lycee Henri Ⅳ. From there, he became an investment banker and economy minister. Unlike the other presidential candidates, he has always worked outside of the government.
In April 2016, he created his own political movement, called En Marche! (On the Move!), recruiting (招募) more than 20,000 members. His party’s ideals were neither right-or left-winged, but more independent. As his party became more and more successful, Macron began to think about presidency, something he’d always been interested in. In November 2016, he announced his decision to run in the 2017 election.
Macron’s campaign relied on his political movement. He struggled to win votes from both parties in France, as well as from the working class. In addition, he was the only candidate that was pro-EU, or supportive of European Union.
While in office, Macron’s biggest focus will be on improving the economy. A total of €50 billion will be dedicated to job training and creating green and sustainable energy. Macron also plans to cut down on corporate taxes, improve the public education system, and lower the unemployment rate by 2.7%.
Following the election is the selection of the president’s cabinet (内阁). The Prime Minister position was given to Edouard Philippe, mayor of Northern Le Havre. However, Macrons cabinet is surprising—one France has never seen before: a gender-balanced cabinet. Out of the 22 seats available, 11 will be taken by women and 11 will be filled by men. This percentage is much higher than other European countries.
With each change of leadership come new ideals and changes to the country. Macron needs a parliament (议会) that will support his hopes and dreams for the future of France.

26、Directions: Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your won words as far as possible.
Working overtime has been common for employees in China’s internet sector for many years, but debate about the practice heated up recently after a blacklist of technology companies that push their staff to follow a “996” schedule went viral online.
The blacklist is said to have been compiled by current and former employees of technology companies. As of Monday, 84 Chinese companies were on the blacklist, which claims employees are forced to follow a “996” schedule, under which work begins at 9 am and finishes at 9 pm, six days a week.
“ If it’s ‘work more, pay more’ model, I’d be a lot more willing to follow the ‘996’ schedule. But the truth is, not every company is run that way. That’s why many people complain,” a software developer working in a gaming company based in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang Province, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
The online complaints and discussions also come amid young people’s changing attitudes toward life and work, and rising rights protection awareness. With improved living standards, more young people have adopted a “work hard, play hard” lifestyle, compared with the older generations’ “work to live” mind-set. While working hard, they are calling for more holidays, and believe holidays are their rights.
“Bus we don’t know who we should resort to when it comes to all these holidays and payment issues, so we resort to the internet,” the developer said.
“Sometimes when projects come along. I work seven days a week, I sometimes even sleep at the office,” the developer said. “I’m a game lover and I like my job, but I think I’m underpaid and my work is not appreciated.”
Industry analysts noted that the hours required by the “996” model exceed the limits established in China’s Labor Contract Law. The culture of overtime is connected to the characteristics embedded in Chinese people - who are hard -working, diligent, and desirous of success. They are even willing to sacrifice some of their personal lives to achieve career success. This might be quite different and hard to be understood in European countries.
Beyond China, most people in other East Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea also suffer from working overtime due to similar cultural elements. Working overtime has become a global phenomenon, and labor unions around the world should play an active role in seeking more ways to better protect workers’ rights amid an industrial upgrading.
