二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Regarded as the “loneliest tree in the world”, the Sitka spruce (云杉) on uninhabited Campbell Island lately has kept good company with a team of New Zealand researchers who believe it could help unlock secrets of climate changes.

The nine-meter-tall spruce holds the Guinness Record title for the “remotest tree” on the planet. It is the sole tree on the shrubby, windswept island, 700 kilometers south of New Zealand in the Southern Ocean. It’s the only tree for 222km around; its nearest neighbor grows on the Auckland Islands.

Although classified as an invasive species, for radiocarbon science leader at GNS Science, Dr. Jocelyn Turnbull, the tree could be a valuable tool to understand what is happening with the uptake of CO2 in the Southern Ocean. In order to measure CO2 concentrations, taking samples of the atmosphere is the best method, and can be complemented with radiocarbon dating samples of deep water. But it comes with limitations. “You can’t collect air that was there 30 years ago, because it is not there anymore,” Turnbull said, “So we came up with this idea of using tree rings. Plants, when they grow, take CO2 out of the air by photosynthesis (光合作用) and they use that to grow their structures and the carbon from the air ends up in the tree rings.”

This is helpful when there is an abundance of established trees, but those are a rarity in the Southern Ocean. Enter the Sitka Spruce - the south most tree, and the team could find it would offer up good data. “It’s grown a lot faster than anything else in that region and the rings are bigger and easier to separate out and get a record form.”

As for the tree’s lonely status: the description may be in the eye of the beholder. “To get to the tree you have to walk through elephant seals and sea lions, penguins and albatross,” Turnbull said. “The tree doesn’t look lonely …it looks quite content actually.”

【1】What is special about the tree?

    A.It measures nine meters wide.

B.It is the only tree on a vast land.

C.It grows on the Auckland Islands.

D.It owns the Guinness title for the “loneliest tree”.

【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.CO2 builds up in the tree rings.

B.The Sitka spruce is a native species.

C.Samples from water are usually inaccessible.

D.Photosynthesis stops the plants absorbing air.

    【3】What may Turnbull support?

A.The tree coexists with a variety of animals.

B.The tree grows well because of suitable climate.

C.It’s unwise to use tree rings as an indicator of CO2.

D.It’s possible to measure previous CO2 concentrations directly.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Trees are of great significance to scientific research.

B.The “loneliest” tree in the world is not lonely at all.

C.Global warming has a far-reaching impact on creatures.

D.A remote Sitka spruce may help us learn about climate changes.

  • 22、If you look around the streets of London, you'll see the many methods people use to move around. 【1】Now there's a new addition: electric, or e-scooters (滑板车).

This traditional children's vehicle has become more complicated over the years. And now, with the addition of a small electric motor, it's become a cheap and easy mode of transport. Scooting around town can be fun and doesn't involve much effort. 【2】 But considering accidents involving an electric scooter in the UK, questions are being asked about their safety and whether traffic laws should be changed.

Many e-scooter riders in the UK broke the law. Some have been seen on pavements, others on the road jumping red traffic lights, adding to the frustration of motorists stuck in jams. In the UK, the law states that riding one on the public highway or pavement is forbidden. But, despite this, it seems the increasing popularity of e-scooters means they can be seen everywhere. 【3】

The UK government is looking at how safely they can be used on the road and is 'reviewing' the law. But its transport minister, Michael Ellis, has told the BBC that: "Micromobility products are appearing in countries across the globe and are an exciting innovation for which we know there is demand. 【4】"

【5】 Despite the fact that some of them can exceed 30mph, they sometimes only have one brake and no lights. However confident the rider may be, larger vehicles on the road make them unprotected. So it seems more work needs to be done to give e-scooters a safe and legal space to travel in.

    A.The roads are already crowded.

B.We are mainly after economic benefits.

C.People seldom see e-scooter accidents in the UK.

D.However, safety must always be our top priority.

E.And now users are calling on regulations to be changed.

F.There's no doubt there are dangers in riding a two-wheeled scooter.

G.It's no wonder they're becoming increasingly popular in cities around the world.

  • 23、In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be. “There’re too many cars, and you can’t move around a lot.”

Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system.

He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique (独特的) is that we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what’s going to happen in front of you when leave home.”

Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just answer current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.

“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.”Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.

【1】Drivers in Los Angeles were mentioned in order to________.

    A. show care for them

    B. introduce their life

    C. solve traffic problems

    B. It can make sure that you will never be late for work.

    C. It helps drivers see clearly what happens on the road.

    D. It can use a lot of information and data all over the world.

【3】The underlined word hits” in the fourth paragraph probably means ________.

    A. has accident

    B. gets to

    C. turns left or right

    D. collects traffic data

【4】What’s Professor Shahabi’s attitude toward his invention?

    C. Disappointed.   D. Optimistic.

  • 24、Fund Tianhong Zenglibao has become the first fund in China to hit 100 billion yuan ($16.30 billion) of sales thanks to its cooperation with Yu’ebao, Alibaba’s wealth management product.

Alipay(支付宝), attached to the e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, announced in June it would offer its users the option to directly invest with the private Tianhong Fund using spare cash from Alipay accounts. The business is called Yu’ebao.

The past five months have seen this fund blossom, owing to the prosperous Interet e-commerce platform, and the Singles Day shopping spree on November 11 had helped Yu’ebao. In the process of a deal on Taobao, once the buyer pays for the order, his or her money is first accepted by Alipay, then after he or she receives the goods, a final confirmation is made and Alipay then gives the money to the seller. If a buyer forgets to confirm payment, the money is transferred into the seller’s account after 10 days by the system.

The Singles Day had a total volume of 35 billion yuan($5.75 billion) and thus a large amount of money passed through Alipay’s account. Analysts estimated that Alipay may have also bought the fund using the extra income, which powerfully enlarged the scale of Yu’ebao. Profit purchasing investors tend to choose safe financial management tools. The relatively stable yields of Yu’ebao is favored by most customers, the report said.

Chinese e-commerence giant Alibaba allows consumers to invest their spare cash in the money market funds through its Alipay online payment service. The product, called Yu’ebao, or “Leftovers Treasure,” has netted 130 billion yuan so far, making the fund’s management firm, Tianhong Fund, the country’s largest fund management company.

Meanwhile, due to the cooperation with Alipay, the management scale of Tianhong monetary fund has doubled from 55.653 billion yuan at the end of September to over 100 billion yuan. During the Singles Day, the frequency of payment of Alipay and Yu’ebao exceeded 188 million and 16.79 million with total transaction volume at 35 billion yuan and 6 billion yuan.

【1】 The fund has been successful so far mainly because ________.

    A. it is the country’s largest fund management fund.

    B. it was the first fund in China to cooperate with Yu’ebao.

    C. consumers can directly invest the spare cash in it through online payment service.
