21、How to Write a Good Ending to a Story
Stories present an event or series of events and have a beginning, middle, and end. 【1】 To write a good ending for your story, there are at least four methods to show the reader why your story is important.
Deciding the End
【2】 The middle will include rising tension and your characters’ reactions to the conflict. Most story conflicts will either be person vs. nature, person vs. society, or person vs. themselves. Your final scene should resolve this conflict, whether your characters get what they want or not.
Explaining the Journey
Reflect on the significance of all the events. What themes, ideas, or arguments are you trying to portray through them? You don’t want to tell your reader directly, but you need to show them. 【3】—where the reader follows the events flowing in turn—will help you create an ending that makes sense based on what has happened earlier.
Using Action and Images
Use action to show (not tell) what is important. We know that stories full of action, whether written or visual, appeal to all ages. Build your ending with description and sensory images, for sensory details connect us emotionally to the story. Highlight a theme. 【4】
Following Logic
Sometimes when we get too excited (or too frustrated) about a story we’re writing, we can forget that events and behaviors tend to follow logic. 【5】 Most topics—if pursued through logic—will invite your readers into deeper thinking.
A.First, identify the parts of your story.
B.Taking a journey to seek inspirations
C.Thinking about your story as a journey
D.Your story will have a beginning to introduce characters and setting.
E.A good story ending often creates a significant impact on the reader.
F.Actually, a good ending just records what would logically happen in a situation.
G.Focusing on a specific subject through images and actions can help you create a structure unique to your story.
22、Even if you’re not an astronomy fan, chances are that you can easily recognize certain constellations (星座) and stars such as the Big Dipper (北斗七星) and the North Star.
The North Star is the brightest star in the constellation known as the Little Dipper. It is so-called because of the special position. If you were to stay up all night looking at the stars, you’d slowly see them move around a point in the sky known as the North Celestial Pole.
You would notice, however, that one star remains still. This is the North Star, so named for its location almost directly in line with the North Celestial Pole.
Due to its position in the sky, at one time sailors used the North Star as a navigational tool. By measuring the angle between the northern horizon and the North Star, a navigator could accurately determine the ship’s latitude.
But latitude, or the imaginary lines stretching across the globe parallel to the equator, was not enough to plot a ship’s location. Knowing latitude only allowed navigators to locate themselves on a particular latitude line at a particular distance from the equator. It was only with the invention of a way to accurately measure longitude that precise navigation became possible.
Although the North Star is no longer used by navigators, it remains a heavenly symbol of human curiosity and exploration.
【1】Which of the following statements about the North Star is TRUE?
A. The North Star is the brightest star in the night sky.
B. The North Star, together with some other stars, make up the Little Dipper.
C. The North Star moves along the same course with other stars.
D. The North Star is exactly located in line with the North Celestial Pole.
【2】What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The North Star could help navigators set a straight course of their ship in the past.
B. Real lines that are parallel to the equator are called “latitude”.
C. Either latitude or longitude could make precise navigation possible.
D. Now the North Star is no longer a navigational tool used by sailors.
【3】Which is probably the best title of the passage?
A. What is a navigational tool?
B. What can be called the earliest GPS?
C. What makes the North Star so special?
D. What is the symbol of human exploration?

24、The middle-aged woman with the black sweater around her shoulders had assumed an accurately adjusted posture: feet shoulder-width apart, arms slightly bent, fists loosely tightened, muscles relaxed yet alert.
She was not preparing for a tae kwon do match, but performing her personal version of the underground battle engaged in daily by millions of New Yorkers: reading, attentively, on a sardine-can D train heading swiftly toward Brooklyn in the evening rush.
“I am a New Yorker,” the woman, Robin Kornhaber, 54, told me as if those five crisp words explained everything. “I can do anything on the subway.”
Reading on the subway is a New York custom, for the masters of the intricately (错综复杂地) folded newspaper like Ms. Kornhaber, who lives in Park Slope and works on the Upper East Side, as well as for teenage girls thumbing through magazines, aspiring actors memorizing lines and immigrants taking comfort in paragraphs in a familiar tongue. These days, among the worn covers may be the occasional Kindle, but since most trains are still devoid of Internet access, the subway ride remains a rare low-tech interlude (插曲) in a city of multitasking workaholics. And so, we read.
Even without a seat, even while pressed with strangers into human panini, even as someone plays a keyboard harmonica and makes a loud noise with a cup of change, even when stumbling home after a party.
There are those whose commutes are carefully timed to the length of a Talk of the Town section of The New Yorker, those who systematically page their way through the classics, and those who always carry a second novel in case they unexpectedly make it to the end of the first on a slow F train. There is a lawyer from Brooklyn who for the past two months has catalogued what she and other commuters are reading on a blog, “The Subway Book Club,” and a student at the New School who spent the summer passing out 600 donated books to subway riders to spread her passion for reading.
And then there are those reading the readers, imagining their story lines. That man in a suit studying “Rosetta Stone Level 3 Italian” on the No.2 train must be preparing to meet his fiancée’s family in Tuscany. The woman reading a young-adult novel at 81st Street is probably a teacher preparing for class.

B.Some people will make guesses at those reading on the train.

26、请阅读下面短文,并按要求以Our Life Rests on Our Choice为题,用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
Life is a matter of choice.Seemingly, it means a choice of concrete (具体的) things. But in fact, it means choosing a way of life.Life is to be lived and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.
Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the threat from the life-and death disease --- SARS.Yet, even during those dreadful times, some suffering people remained optimistic.Instead of wearing white masks, some people turned to colorful ones, and thus displayed a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean “SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING.” People who survive these kinds of circumstances decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the hardships.
Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities (逆境), we do have the right to choose to live optimistically, to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.
Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day.
