二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   “Could you see the whites of their eyes?” said the man, who was seated on a soap box.

“Nothing of the kind,” replied old Henry warmly. “Just a lot of figures running towards us, and I let go at where there appeared to be most. Bang!”

“Mr. Fleming, ” said the grocer — his respectful voice expressed somehow the old man’s exact social weight — “Mr. Fleming, you never were frightened much in those battles, were you?”

The veteran (老兵) looked down and smiled. Observing his manner, the entire group laughed a little. “Well, I guess I was,” he answered finally, “Pretty well scared, sometimes. Why, in my first battle, I thought the sky was falling down. I thought the world was coming to an end. You bet I was scared.”

Everyone laughed. Perhaps it seemed strange and rather wonderful to them that a man should admit the thing, and in the tone of their laughter there was probably more admiration than if old Fleming had declared that he had always been a lion. Moreover, they knew that he had ranked as an orderly sergeant (中士), and so their opinion of heroism was fixed. None, to be sure, knew how an orderly sergeant ranked, but then it was understood to be somewhere just shy of a major-general’s stars. So, when old Henry admitted that he had been frightened, there was a laugh.

“The trouble was,” said the old man, “I thought they were all shooting at me. Yes, sir, I thought every man in the other army was aiming at me in particular, and only me. And it seemed so unreasonable, you know. I wanted to explain to them what an almighty good fellow I was, because I thought then they might quit all trying to hit me. But I couldn’t explain, and they kept on being unreasonable. Blim! Blam! Bang! So, I ran!”

Two little triangles of wrinkles appeared at the corners of his eyes. Evidently he appreciated some comedy in this storytelling. Down near his feet, however, little Jim, his grandson, was obviously horror-stricken. His hands were clasped nervously, and his eyes were wide with astonishment at this terrible scandal (丑闻), his most magnificent grandfather telling such a thing.

“That was at Chancellorsville. Of course, afterwards I got kind of used to it. A man does. Lots of men, though, seem to feel all right from the start. I did, as soon as ‘I got on to it,’ as they say now; but at first I was pretty well scared. Now, there was young Jim Conklin, old Si Conklin’s son—that used to keep the leather factory—you none of you recall him―well, he went into it from the start just as if he was born to it. But with me it was different. I had to get used to it.”

When little Jim walked with his grandfather, he was in the habit of skipping along on the stone pavement, in front of the three stores and the hotel of the town, and betting that he could avoid the cracks. But upon this day he walked calmly, with his hand gripping two of his grandfather’s fingers. Sometimes he kicked abstractedly at dandelions that curved over the walk. Anyone could see that he was much troubled.

“Um,” said the boy, with a strange lack of interest. He continued his reflections. Then finally he asked: “Grandpa—now—was that true what you were telling those men?”

“What?” asked the grandfather. “What was I telling them?”

    “Oh, about your running.”

“Why, yes, that was true enough, Jimmie. It was my first fight, and there was an awful lot of noise, you know.”

Jimmie seemed a bit confused that this idol (偶像), of its own will, should be so weak. His stout boyish idealism was injured and then lapsed into a moody silence.

1What was the old man talking about at the very beginning of the story?

A.A brave hero. B.A funny joke.

B.They thought that he was just making some kind of joke.

C.They were scared of his social weight and could do nothing else.

D.They teased him for his not being ashamed of his escape from the battlefield.

3Why was little Jim astonished when Fleming told his story?

A.Because people laughed at his grandfather.

B.Because his grandfather failed to keep the secret.

    C.Because his grandfather disappointed him.

D.Because people knew how an orderly sergeant ranked.

4Which of the following can best describe Henry Fleming?

A.Shy but brave. B.Smart and admirable.

  • 23、   Being bored, lazy and disconnected from physical work leaves lots of time and space for your body and mind to fill with negative substitutes. Just as an old saying goes, idle hands are the devil’s playground.

Neuroscience (神经科学) actually supports this theory. Or at least, research shows that the opposite is true − active hands stimulate your brain to produce chemicals that balance emotions and lower anxiety.

In the 19th century anxious women were often given the prescription to knit (编织) because doctors sensed that it kind of calmed them down. That is not to say that anxiety can be cured by knitting. But it does highlight how repetitive hand movements involved in the craft combine with the satisfaction of casting off a finished product to wear or give. It carries mental health benefits at a deep, biochemical level.

Other research has focused on knitting’s emotional benefits. One study showed that knitting lowers the heart rate by 11 beats per minute. Another linked knitting with a decreased chance of developing cognitive impairment (认知障碍) and memory loss.

And still others point to positive benefits in managing chronic (慢性的) pain and depression. Of course, knitting is not the only way to take your emotional well-being into your own hands. Woodworking, gardening, pottery and painting will also benefit your mental health. And they all involve putting your two hands to work.

What do you do with your hands to keep them busy and keep yourself calm and happy?

1What does the underlined word “idle” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Inactive. B.Occupied. C.Flexible. D.Awkward.

2Why did doctors in the 19th century advise anxious women to knit?

A.To satisfy their need. B.To reduce their anxiety.

C.To help them make money. D.To equip them with a new skill.

3Which of the following best expresses the key point of the text?

    A.The advantages of active hands.

    B.The effects of repetitive knitting.

C.The reliability of the scientific research.

    D.The benefits of keeping positive.

  • 24、   I’m a student in my fourth year of a biomedical science degree at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, but I also work 38 hours a week at Sainsbury’s to make ends meet. I do three night shifts a week, plus overtime if I can get it. Monday is the most occupied day for me -- I work from 10 pm until 8 am on Saturday and Sunday nights, earning just over £100 a night, and then I have to be at my first lecture at 9 am on Monday. By the time I finish lectures, at 2 pm, I’m exhausted, but I know I have to be back at work by 10 pm.

I constantly have to force myself to stay awake, and to be alert, whatever it takes. A packet of Skittles and a Red Bull usually helps. The work I do at Sainsbury’s is very physical like stacking shelves. I’m lucky because I’m an active person and the amount I lift at work is nothing compared with the weights I lift in the gym. I know I have the strength to bear it.

I’m originally from Nigeria. I came here when I was seven, growing up in Croydon, south London. Money was tight. My parents gave me everything I needed, but there was no money to spend on luxuries. I worked hard at school though and, with the help of GT Scholars, I got some of the best A-level grades in my class.

Unfortunately, though I had applied for “settled” British residential status when very young, the Home Office waited until I was in sixth form to approve my application. That meant I wasn’t eligible for a student loan. The only way I could afford to go to university was that if I got a job that would pay for all my living costs and my parents, who work in market research, paid for my tuition fees. In Scotland, that’s about £7,000 a year.

I don’t have much time to socialize because of my job. Ideally, I would also like to have more time to study so I can excel at my course. Yes, I have a lot on my plate, but working hard isn’t new to me. Growing up, my parents and my mentors in the church and at GT Scholars cultivated in me the importance of working hard for what I want in life.

My dream is to do an MA in physiotherapy next year and then get a job working for the NHS. But right now, I’m just focused on trying to get the best grades I can. Whenever I find life hard, I tell myself this is about my future. I don’t need much, but I would like to worry less about money and have more free time. That is what I look forward to the most.

【1】Why does the author work long hours and sometimes overtime every week?

A.To help his parents pay off the debts.

B.To pay for his tuition fees.

C.To prove his ability to earn money.

D.To pay for his own living expenses.

【2】The underlined word “eligible” in the passage can be replaced by ________.

    A.responsible

    B.qualified

    C.feasible

    D.anxious

【3】According to the passage, which of the following words can NOT be used to describe the author?

    A.Sociable.

    B.Diligent.

    C.Ambitious.

    D.Persistent.

【4】Which of the following proverbs can best summarize the passage?

A.A penny saved is a penny earned.

    B.Actions speak louder than words.

C.God helps those who help themselves.

D.Where there is life, there is hope.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

Brainpower: Use It or Lose It?

Where brainpower is concerned, the old rule of ‘use it, or lose it’ holds true from the start. Babies who receive love and encouragement from their parents develop the neural (神经的)connections they need to get on in life. But what happens to those who fail to get this support?

It would be comforting to believe that such children escape long term damage by being too young to speak, or know any different, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

At a recent meeting of the Royal Society of Medicine, the participants were shown slides taken with a powerful scanner comparing the brains of ‘normal’ three-year-old with those who had been raised in poverty or in orphanages. The work was done by Bruce Perry of the Child Trauma Academy in Houston, Texas. The scans showed that the frontal-temporal areas of the brain, those responsible for personality and enabling a person to display and regulate emotions, showed little activity.

For years it has long been known to scientists that animals brought up in enriched environment have larger and more complex brains than animals that grow up in disadvantaged situations, so experts like Perry assumed that the same would hold true for humans. However, it is only now, thanks to powerful scanners that allow this theory to be put to the test, that the damage is clearly visible. Perry explains the reason for the abnormality is that the brain develops in a ‘use-dependent’ way, growing, organising and working according to experience. With the right stimulation, the brain makes the connections it needs. Without it, synapses (突触), junctions between the neurons used to transport the brain’s messages, actually dissolve. “Negative experiences play a vital role in organising the neural system in the developing brain,” says Perry; in other words, ill-treatment in infancy leads to faulty wiring in the brain.
