二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Most of us have looked up at the stars that fill the night sky and wondered whether we’re alone in the universe. Indeed, the question of whether there’ s life out there has been something humankind ’s been asking itself for countless years. But thanks to China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), the answer to this question may come a lot sooner than we expected.

The telescope has a huge round reflector, which measures 500 meters across and has a perimeter(周长)of 1.6 kilometers. Because of its great size, it would have been both difficult and inefficient to get FAST to move like a regular telescope. Instead, FAST’s designers came up with a great solution: its surface is made up of 4450 panels which can be individually adjusted. This clever design feature allows scientists to detect radio signals from any angle with a great degree of accuracy. “Panels can change their positions through connected wires and parallel (关联的) robots. We can control their position with an accuracy of 1 mm,” Zheng Yuanpeng, chief engineer of the telescope’s panel project, told Xinhua News Agency.

FAST’s engineers also had the task of finding a suitable location. As any interference would affect its ability to detect distant radio waves, it needed to be built in a remote area. Luckily, the perfect spot was found in the beautiful mountains of Guizhou Province. “There are three hills about 500 meters away from one another, creating a valley that is perfect to support the telescope," Sun Caihong, chief engineer of FAST’ s construction, told Xinhua.

And although it wasn’t yet fully operated, FAST had already made great discoveries by October 2017. Since 1967, only around 2000 pulsars (脉冲星) have been discovered, yet FAST had detected six more by October 2017. Once FAST is fully up and running, we may finally have the answer to one of the biggest questions in history.

1What is the purpose of mentioning the question in Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the new giant telescope.

B.To explain why there is life in universe.

C.To remind readers to think about the life in space.

D.To emphasize the question that should be answered.

2What can we know from Paragraph 2?

A.The telescope is made up of many panels.

B.The area of FAST is about 800 square kilometers.

C.The engineer can handle FAST’s position accurately.

D.The individual panel helps scientists catch radio signals.

3Why was FAST built in Guizhou?

A.Because Guizhou is a remote province.

B.Because Guizhou has an ideal valley.

    C.Because Guizhou has beautiful mountains.

D.Because Guizhou has the ability to build it.

4What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.FAST’s timeline. B.FAST’s future.

    C.FAST’s operation. D.FAST’s discoveries.

  • 22、There’s a child-like joy that comes with ordering something online — whether it be clothes or kitchen facilities. We sit refreshing the postal service to see when our items will arrive, and we become overly excited, hopeful and anxious.

Ryan Howes, a clinical psychologist from Pasadena California, has interpreted this phenomenon as “anticipatory pleasure”. “A lot of people believe that placing that order and waiting for it does feel good. This is why people look forward to dinner reservations, hair appointments and yes, receiving packages,” he says.

But it’s not the purchase itself that brings about this happiness. Experts say there’s something about the anticipation of waiting that is exciting for those in need of change in their lives. “It can be helpful to anticipate good things in the future, ’’says Ryan Howes. “Waiting for a parcel can serve as a temporary distraction (分心) from the dullness of your life because it gives you something new to wake up to and get excited about.”

However, anticipatory pleasure isn’t always a good thing. While waiting, many are worried about their items arriving on time, appearing broken, or simply not living up to expectations. Even when our package finally arrives, you’ll find that initial excitement has probably waned. Howes cautions that comfort shopping is only a temporary fix. It’s just a distraction from bigger problems, but it hasn’t done anything to change the bigger problems. It only helps you escape from them temporarily.

“Many people often seek external solutions, such as luxury purchases or alcohol, as a way of feeling better quickly. However, a healthier long-term curing mechanism is to look inward and appreciate your life with gratitude. Real pleasure comes from taking action rather than wait passively.” Howes says.

So the next time you feel the urge to order and track something online, chew over it.

Travel brings the joy of new worlds, different ways of living, art, and storytelling over shared meals. Often we seek travel in a foreign country to brighten our life this way. But over the past decades, Canadian hosts have developed exceptional experiences that explore geography and diverse cultures closer to home.

At Maple Leaf Adventures, we’ve been part of that evolution(演变) of travel on the West Coast. We design locally run and environmentally conscious trips that are off the beaten track. The following are some short getaways and longer journeys we’ve developed to take you away from everyday life and into the magic of discovering beauty, ideas and joy in attractive places.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jonathan woke up and looked around. For a moment, he wasn't sure where he was. Then he remembered. He and his sister, Julie were visiting Aunt Gwen. They had spent yesterday helping Aunt Gwen clean her basement. Today, they would have time to play.

He looked out of the window. Fresh snow covered the ground. He could hardly wait to go outside.

Jonathan dressed and hurried downstairs to the kitchen.

“HI, sleepyhead,” said Aunt Gwen. “Julie has already eaten her breakfast. She's outside.” “That's where I'm going as soon as I finish breakfast,” Jonathan said. A short time later, he zipped up his coat, put on his boots, and walked out of the front door. The sun made the snow shine.

He looked around. He didn't see his sister, but he saw something else. Strange footprints in the snow tracked across Aunt Gwen's yard.

“They're way too big to be Julie’s. They looked like they belonged to a dinosaur,” Jonathan said. Then he added, “But that's silly. Dinosaurs are not around anymore.” He looked closer. The footprints were the shape of a very large oval (椭圆形) with a stem. Maybe they belong to an elephant or a hippo that escaped from the zoo, he thought. He held his breath and listened. He didn't hear anything.

He remembered a book he'd seen earlier on Aunt Gwen's shelf. It was a book about animal tracks. He dashed inside to get it. The book had pictures of animals and the tracks they made. He turned the pages one by one, but none of the photos looked like the footprints in Aunt Gwen's yard.

He stared at those footprints again. An animal that made such big tracks would have to be heavy. Its tracks should sink far down into the snow. Yet these footprints seemed to skim (飞速擦过) across the top.

    1.续写词数应为150左右;
