二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Bats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.

Last week, the group of scientists said they had discovered important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体). The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒),which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what causes aging.

The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived an average of 37 years. The scientists said it had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, reaching 41 years. The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process.

Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rat.

1What decides bats’ aging process according to the text?     .

    A. The body size of the bat   B. The type of chromosomes

    C. The building of cell   D. The length of telomeres

2How long does a greater mouse-eared bat generally live?

    A. 19 years.   B. 41 years.

    C. 37 years.   D. 60 years.

3We can learn from the text that  _________    .

    A. nineteen kinds of bats could live longer than humans

    B. the scientists have studied bats for more than six decades

    C. the bats studied in the research are of the same species

    D. researchers focus on finding out why humans live long

4In which column of a magazine can you read the text?

    A. Science   B. Lifestyle

    C. Fashion   D. Business

  • 22、Last year I ruined my summer vacation by bringing along a modern convenience that was too convenient for my own good: the iPad. Instead of looking at nature, I checked my e-mail. Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed(推特简讯). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation, but my head wasn’t.

So this year I made up my mind to try something different: withdrawal(退出)from the Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m bad at self-control.  But I was determined.  I started by giving the iPad to my wife.

The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration (沮丧). I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely cut off from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for the radio—and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to do all along: read books.

This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation straggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem. I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “I don’t need it,” I said.

However, as we return to post-vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I’m back at work?

There are times when the need to know what’s being said right now is great.  I have no intention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation (诱惑)to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website ortwo.

I think a vacation is supposed to help you reset your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked.

【3】When back at work, the author will probably choose to ________.

    A. stay away from the Internet for ever

    B. continue to road more and more books

    C. keep control of when and how to use the Internet

    D. stop checking what is being said right now completely

【4】What is the author’s opinion of a great vacation in the passage?

    A. A vacation is having nothing to do but read all day.

    B. A vacation proves that a life of pleasure is overvalued.

    D. A vacation means a change of pace to make one more creative.

  • 23、While the idea of warmer, shorter winters might sound appealing to farmers eager to tap into longer growing seasons those engaged in Georgia’s massive peach industry are finding the trend alarming. Since 1960, the average winter temperature in Georgia, has risen by 5°F. For farmers who depend on cold weather to help peaches grow, the state’s diminishing winters are a warning to adapt or else.

One of the keys to growing the perfect Georgia peach is something called “chill (寒冷的) hours.” Nut and fruit trees require a certain number of chill hours below 45°F to regulate their growth. Without the needed amount, flower buds may be delayed or unpredictable in spring and fruit set and fruit quality will be poor. In Georgia, home to nearly 12,000 acres of peaches, the average peach tree requires anywhere from 650 to 850 chill hours each season.

The impact from a loss of chill hours was felt most recently in 2017, when farms across the state averaged less than 400 hours and 85% of the peach crop was lost. “It was so bad that we didn’t care about the blooms anymore.” Chavez said, “We wondered if the plants would survive.”

While planting new varieties of peaches that require fewer chill hours is part of the solution, it’s not the only characteristic that’s necessary. Despite warmer, shorter winters, Georgia still experiences a consistent frost in early March. Peach varieties with fewer chill hours often bloom earlier, making them easy victims to this freezing spring temperatures.

In response, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is experimenting with hybrid varieties that achieve that delicate balance. The days of planting 1,000+ chill hour varieties in Georgia may be gone, but the hope is that continued research into global warming-tolerant varieties may keep the state’s official fruit firmly in the sweet spot of American produce.

“We’ve got to keep changing as the environment changes,” Georgia farmer Lawton Pearson said. “But it’s not something that scares us in the slightest about the future of growing peaches. It’s just something you’ve got to deal with.”

  • 24、   When a friend comes to you after a stressful day, how do you comfort them? Do you let them complain? Do you pour them a glass of wine? Those could work. But a new study finds that a very effective technique is also simple and easy — hugging.

Michael Murphy is a psychology expert at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He wanted to know if people who received hugs regularly could handle stress and conflict belief. " Individuals who report perceiving the availability of a network of supportive individuals lead to show better adaptation when faced with stress. But your just having a support network does not mean that you definitely feel that support, he said. "So some researchers have argued that many of the behaviors we use to support others who are stressed might actually be counterproductive, because  behaviors might unintentionally communicate to others that they're not able to manage stress."  he added.

Murphy and his team interviewed 404 men and women every evening for two weeks. During these interviews, the participants were asked a simple yes — or — no question — whether somebody had hugged them that day — and a simple yes or no question of whether they had experienced conflict or tension with somebody that day.

They also were asked questions about their social interactions — how many socialinteractions they had that day and responded to questions about negative and positive mood states . And the researchers found that individuals who experienced a conflict were not as negatively affected if they received a hug that day as were participants who experienced conflict and didn't get a hug. Murphy and his team also saw that people who received a hug didn't carry the negative effect to the next day, while those who did not receive a hug would. The findings are in the journal PLOS ONE.

Murphy does include this warning: "So our findings should not be taken as evidence that people should just start hugging anyone and everyone who seems distressed. A hug from one boss at work or a stranger on the street could be viewed as neither agreeable nor positive. " The idea is to relieve stress. Not add to it.

1What does the first paragraph serve as?

    A.A lead-in B.A background

    C.An argument D.A summary.

2Why did the researchers interview those people?

A.To test the influence of hugging.

B.To find out causes of their conflicts.

C.To ask for advice on relieving stress.

D.To seek ways to comfort troubled people.

3What do Murphy's words warn in the end?

A.The interview results prove their findings.

B.A boss should comfort workers by hugging.

C.There are some limitations of their findings.

D.People should hug others regularly and actively.

4Which can be the best title for the text?

A.Everyone Needs Hugs B.A Hug Could Do Anything

C.How to Comfort Your Friends D.Hugs Seem to Reduce Stress

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、“A revolutionary approach on how to connect our world without being super-weird ... In the Iceland-verse, there's ... skies you can see with your eyeballs, volcanic rocks you can caress, and really big geysers(间歇泉)you can observe from a safe distance.” So _________ a viral advertisement designed to lure tourists to Iceland. The target of the parody(滑稽的模仿)is Mark Zuckerberg in _________, and Silicon Valley in general, for whom the idea of the "metaverse(元宇宙)" -- a sort of 3d sequel(续集)to today's two-dimensional internet, in which users work, play, buy and sell inside immersive virtual worlds- has become the latest Next Big Thing.

Iceland's tourist board is not the only _________. When, on October 28th, Mr. Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook as Meta Platforms, to signal his _________ to the new idea, many assumed it was a PR stunt(公关伎俩)to divert attention from the social-media giant's scandals. Mr. Zuckerberg may well prefer to think about exciting new products than deal with the downsides of his existing ones. And exaggerated advertising is the water in which techies swim. _________, to stop the analysis there would be too dismissive. There are good reasons to take the metaverse seriously.

One is historical: as computers have become more capable, the _________ that they generate have become richer. The internet began its life displaying nothing more exciting than white text on a black background. Flat _________ were added in the 1990s. Video came to dominate in the 2010s. Therefore, a(n) _________ into three dimensions is a logical consequence of the steady growth in computing power.

That progression is more than merely _________. The video-game industry has been selling virtual worlds for years. "Ever Quest", an online game launched in 1999, had half a million subscribers __________. (Players quickly co-opted(选择)it for socializing, and even __________, as well as dragon-slaying.) "World of Warcraft," which arrived five years later, __________ 12 million, with many players spend their real money on virtual goods. It is hard to argue that an idea will never __________ when, for millions of people, it already has.

Finally, mockers(嘲笑)is a(n) __________ guide to the future. When YouTube was launched in 2005, commentators wondered why anyone would what to watch spotty teenagers filming themselves in their bedrooms. The two decades, online dating has taken its place as a perfectly normal way to meet people. Smartphones are some of the bestselling devices ever built. In the 1990s their brick-sized predecessors were considered ridiculous status symbols for insecure investment bankers.

This does not mean every Silicon Valley brainwave will automatically succeed. Nor does it mean a fully grown metaverse will arrive overnight. But it does suggest that something metaverse -__________ lying in the relatively near future is an idea worth taking seriously.
