21、 Dyson, a company best known for its innovative(创新的) line of vacuums and fans, is apparently also interested in providing urbanites with a convenient way to filter(过滤) air pollution. The company recently applied for a patent (专利) in the UK for a pair of headphones that takes in polluted air through ear cups and directs the filtered product to an integrated mouthpiece. Dyson’s engineers behind the invention describe it as a more convenient alternative to traditional face masks.
“In locations with particularly high levels of air pollution, many people have recognized the benefits of reducing their exposure to these pollutants and have therefore taken to wearing face masks with the aim of filtering out at least a portion of the pollutants present in the air before it reaches the mouth and nose,” the inventors write in the invention summary. “However, as these face masks typically cover at least the users mouth and nose, they can make normal breathing more laborious.”
So how does Dyson imagine this equipment working? As you might have guessed for a company that specializes in innovative ways to move air, the ear cups contain small fans that spin at 12, 000 rotations per minute. This provides enough suction(抽吸) to draw in about 1.4 liters of air per second. The air is then filtered to remove pollutants and pushed to a partially-transparent mouthpiece at the front of the user. As a way to reduce the noise of the fans, the headphones also include adaptive noise canceling with an integrated microphone and speakers.
While it’s unknown whether this patent will ever develop into an actual product, it's unfortunately something that many people could use. In its “state of Global Air 2019” report, the non-profit Health Effects Institute ( HEI) listed air pollution as the fifth leading cause for death worldwide, ahead of malnutrition, alcohol use, and physical inactivity.
So are Dyson’s air-purifying headphones straight out of some dystopian(反乌托邦的) science fiction films? You bet. But it’s increasingly our reality that much of the world is living and breathing in cities where that unthinkable future is already playing out. Necessity in the face of such awful man-made pollution will eventually push something similar to market. Whether humanity takes the hint(暗示) and does something to make them useless is sadly less certain.
【1】What is the disadvantage of tradition face masks according to Dyson’s engineers?
A.They keep fresh air out.
B.They need regular cleaning.
C.They make breathing difficult.
D.They take too long to filter the pollutants.
【2】Why is the HEI’s report mentioned?
A.To show the necessity of the new invention.
B.To show its contribution to the new invention.
C.To explain why people tend to go after new things.
D.To explain why people worldwide have a shorter life.
【3】What does the author want to imply in the last paragraph?
A.Air-purifying headphones are not new.
B.Dyson’s invention will be of little use.
C.Human action should come before the technology.
D.Dyson's engineers got inspiration from sci-fi films.
【4】What would be the best tile for the text?
A.A pioneer of innovation is in a dilemma.
B.Risks that could lead to death are still rising.
C.Air pollution is no longer an age-old problem.
D.A high-tech product might be needed in smoke-choked cities.
22、On 4 May, Headley Court, a former military (军事) site in Surrey, England, was transformed into the Seacole Center — a temporary hospital for people recovering from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus. It is named after the nurse Mary Seacole in recognition of her contribution to medicine.
Seacole was born in Jamaica (牙买加) in 1805. Her mother ran a hotel where people could receive medical care and Seacole learnt a lot about nursing from her. An eager traveler, Seacole learnt more about new medicines and treatments as she journeyed across the world.
During the Crimean War (1853-1856) , Seacole wanted to join a group of nurses, led by Florence Nightingale, who were going to Crimea to treat British soldiers. The Crimean War was an international conflict fought between Britain, France and Turkey on one side, and Russia on the other. However, Seacole’s request to join was rejected. She believed this was possibly because of racism (种族主义) which is when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their race.
Instead, Seacole went to Crimea by herself and set up the British Hotel, which was a place where soldiers could go to receive treatment. Among these soldiers she became known as “Mother Seacole” because of how well she looked after them.
After the war, Seacole fell ill and didn’t have much money. To assist her, people put on a festival in her honor in 1857. Seacole also published a book about her life, called Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands, before she died in 1881 in London. Over the years, people have campaigned for Seacole’s story to be more widely told.
Although the Seacole Center is only a temporary hospital, it is hoped that this might lead to more awareness of her achievements.
【1】How did Seacole get a deep knowledge of new medicines?
A.By learning from her mother.
B.By traveling across the world.
C.By attending to different soldiers.
D.By studying from medical books.
【2】Why was Seacole refused to join the nurses during the Crimean War?
A.She was a black woman.
B.She lacked medical skills.
C.She was too old and fell ill.
D.She showed no mercy to soldiers.
【3】How did people help Seacole after the war?
A.They created a festival to honor her.
B.They published a book to remember her.
C.They campaigned to raise money for her.
D.They set up a hotel named “Mother Seacole”.
【4】What’s the text mainly talking about?
A.A hospital named in Seacole’s honor.
B.A woman who made history.
C.Seacole nursing soldiers well.
D.The contributions of Seacole.

A team of students from Stanford University are making efforts to launch a satellite powered exclusively by water into orbit (轨道) around the Mars. The team names itself the Super Lunar Explorers.
These creative students are now attending a competition called the Future Space Challenge, which is held annually by NASA, the American space agency to find more talents in space. The winners will be publicized in about a month. The final three winners will be announced in early 2023. They will get to ride on NASA’s space launch system in early 2024.
The principle behind the competition is simple: to think, design, build and launch “qualified small satellites”. NASA officials required that the satellites must be able to perform “advanced operations near and beyond the moon”. Twenty teams are competing for the championship. But the Super Lunar Explorer satellites are totally different. They use only water to power their spacecraft, which has never been done before.
Such a novel idea for a water-powered satellite came from Peckon Lewis, who works at Stanford University now, who once worked as NASA’s chief technologist. He has always been wondering whether something other than rockets can be used to push spacecraft beyond earth. “A lot of things we send into space these days is with the help of rockets——the only way we get anything into space,” he said, in a Stanford press release. “But if we could try something that has been already there? If we could do that, if we could re-fuel spacecraft while they’re already in space...”
The spacecraft is about 30 centimeters in length, and the two pieces are interconnected. The lower part of the satellite is designed to store water, which will be separated by solar panel into two elements: hydrogen and oxygen. When one combines hydrogen and oxygen with a spark (火花), an explosion was caused. This provides a forward movement, known as thrust.
【1】The Crucial part of the competition “the Future Space Challenge” is ______.
A.to think, design, build and deliver a qualified-small satellite.
B.to launch a satellite to take a watery flight to the moon.
C.to make the satellite perform advanced operations near and beyond the moon.
D.to launch a satellite powered only by water into an orbit around the moon.
【2】It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A.There is a lot of rubbish of rockets and satellites in the orbit these days.
B.The team members of the Super Lunar Explorers are the students of Peckon Lewis.
C.A water-powered satellite will soon be sent into the orbit around the moon.
D.The explosion of the combination of hydrogen and oxygen provides power.
【3】According to the passage which of the following will Peckon Lewis agree with?
A.To ban using rockets for the sake of safety.
B.To design a water-powered vehicle to push spacecraft.
C.To use something already in space as power.
D.To try using water in space to push spacecraft.
【4】What would be the best title of the passage?
A.A Water-Powered Flight to the Moon.
B.A Competition for Water-Powered Satellite.
C.A Design of Water-Powered Space Journey.
D.A Spacecraft Powered by Water.
