二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In our life of journey, we each have important roles to play. Some are conductors and some are singers. And the rest are heroes in the supporting cast(配角演员) and are necessary to complete the different tasks in life. The “stars” would be greatly darkened if the individual heroes don’t support their performances. The magical accents of the performance section might sound terrible and out of place, unless you could also hear the music they accompany. Even one member of an orchestra doing less than their best could stop the harmony of the musical piece.

So even though you may not receive the attention of the other performers, your contribution is valuable and a unique part of the success of the whole in the life you lead.

When you do your job well, you put your own unique energy into the task. Each of us has a different personality and a different talent, just suited for the different roles we support. We can look around us at any moment and identify with the people we work with. Doing your job well displays your ability and gratitude, while learning the lessons from others can move us towards our goals.

When you are fully present in the job you do, you bring the fullness of your mind, body, and spirit to the moment. Your contribution is strengthened by your talents and abilities, and they can attract the right people and circumstances to your experience. You are playing your role to your very best. You are giving your best to be the world and making it a better place for all of us to live in. Remember, each of us is expected to be the best.

【1】What does the first paragraph mainly discuss?

    A. The “stars’ also need many other people’s support.

    B. One person might perform different roles.

    C. You are a failure unless you become the “stars’.

    D. The “stars” are successful because of their own efforts.

【2】According to the author, doing the job well can help you _________.

    A. get a rise in your company

    B. show your ability and talents

    C. receive the attention of others

    D. get a sense of success

【3】What can we learn from the text?

    A. No pains, no gains.

    B. Practice makes perfect.

    C. All roads lead to Rome.

    D. Everyone is expected to do his best.

  • 23、Is beauty something always positive? Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管的) circle, beauty can become a disadvantage.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the manly qualities required.

This is true even in politics, “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates(候选人). She asked 125 college students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

【1】In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness ________.

    A. makes women look more honest and capable

    B. strengthens the manly qualities required

    C. often enables women to succeed quickly

    D. is of no importance to women

2Bowman’s experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _____.

    A. turns out to be a disadvantage to men

    B. has as little effect on men as on women

    C. affects men and women alike

    D. is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women

3According to the passage, people’s views on beauty are often _____.

    A. practical     B. one sided

    C. old fashioned D. supportive

Jessica Quinn, from New Zealand, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma—a rare form of bone cancer at the age of nine and eventually she had her leg amputated (截肢) to stop the disease from spreading.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, the brave woman said she got u the courage to share the powerful picture publicly for the first time. Following a 14-hour surgery to remove her leg during her childhood, the cancer survivor started struggling with her body image because she was “forever stuck with it”. I know people often speak about social media in a negative light yet it’s helped me grow. Simply just seeing the response and love I get when I share things like this and then seeing how it can help others is so heart-warming.”

“We’re all in this together and if I can make someone feel beautiful in their own skin then I’ll take every chance I can get.”

Her social media post has since attracted more than 9,000 “likes” after sharing the post on Thursday evening. “The reaction has been extraordinary,” Jessica said. “I got a flood of comments and I read every single one of them which brought tears to my eyes. Meanwhile, I’m always blown away by the support and love I get.”

    THE PET LAMB

Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant’s felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.

While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “You see I am here for the lamb,” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother's side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.

“That’s my lamb now, Charlie!” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.

“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours!” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.

But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.

“Pray tell your boy to stop a moment,” she said in husky (沙哑的) tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.

The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.

In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.
