二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Many people would be unhappy to see young children sitting next to them on a flight, but a man called Todd took it as an opportunity to give a hand to a helpless mom. Jessica spoke about what Todd had done to make her travels with her children much easier.

She was in a panic when she boarded the plane. Her 4-month-old Alexander was screaming due to a series of unexpected events. Her 3-year-old Caroline, who had been excited before boarding the plane, lost her courage and began screaming too. As Jessica tried to calm them down and help them get settled in, the man sitting next to them stopped in to help.

He reached for the baby and held him while Jessica fastened Caroline’s seatbelt, got her iPad and started her movie. Once Caroline was settled and relatively calm, he also played games with her so that Jessica could feed Alexander. The kids were calm, but he didn't stop there. Throughout the flight, he engaged 3-year-old Caroline’s best friend.

Much to Jessica’s joy, the man was taking the same connecting flight, too. He helped them get off the plane and led them to the next gate, holding Caroline’s hand. As if that wasn't enough, he changed his seat on the next flight so he could sit in their row to help them. He told Jessica his wife had had a similar experience when their two boys were young and that a stranger had done the same thing, which moved him to spread the kindness.

The heartwarming story serves as a reminder to show kindness toward panic parents with young babies. Children don’t yet know how to handle their feelings, so they cry and scream when they are confused or uncomfortable in a new place. By offering a helping hand, we could not only help an overwhelmed parent but also make a child feel a little more comfortable.

【1】Jessica got panicked while boarding the plane because ________.

    A.she couldn’t find her passport

B.she was followed by a stranger

C.her children lost control of their emotions

D.her children were fighting with each other

【2】What did Todd do to draw Caroline’s attention away from her mom?

    A.Starting her movie.

    B.Feeding her snacks.

    C.Fastening her seatbelt.

    D.Playing games with her.

【3】What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?

A.Parents are always treated kindly at the airport.

B.People should help parents with young children.

C.Children cry in order to attract people’s attention.

D.Children refuse to learn to manage their emotions.

【4】According to the passage, Todd can be best described as ________.

    A.honest and funny

    B.brave and energetic

    C.selfless and determined

    D.patient and considerate

  • 22、Could looking through trees be the view to a greener future? Trees replacing the clear glass in your windows is not a work of science fiction. It's happening now.

Forest Products Laboratory researcher Junyong Zhu together with colleagues from the University of Maryland and University of Colorado has developed a transparent wood material that may be the window of tomorrow. Researchers found that transparent wood has the potential to outperform glass currently used in construction in nearly every way.

While glass is the most common material used in window construction, it comes with quite a few bad consequences. Heat easily transfers through glass and amounts to higher energy bills when it escapes during cold weather and pours in when it's warm. Glass production used for construction also comes with a heavy carbon footprint. Manufacturing emissions alone are approximately 25,000 metric tons per year, without considering the heavy footprint of transporting the glass.

The innovation was developed using wood from the balsa tree, which is native to South and Central America. The team treated balsa wood to an oxidizing bath, where the wood is kept in a bleach solution at room temperature to remove the light-absorbing substance from the structure. The wood is then penetrated(注入)with a synthetic polymer called polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), creating a product that is virtually transparent. So the transparent wood is created, which is far more durable and lighter than glass.

Switching to transparent wood could prove to be cost efficient as well. It is approximately five times more thermally efficient than glass. cutting energy costs. It is made from a sustainable, renewable resource with low carbon emissions.

With all of these potential benefits for consumers, manufacturing and the environment, the case for transparent wood couldn't be clearer.

【1】What is the main problem with glass used in window construction?

A.It is inefficient in letting heat out.

B.It does not reflect light and heat.

C.It cause a high ecological cost

    D.It is inconvenient to transport.

【2】What does the underlined part "a bleach solution" refer to?

A.A liquid to make objects white.

    B.A process to solve problems.

    C.A container to store liquids.

D.A way to make colors fade.

【3】What does paragraph 4 focus on?

    A.How to make things transparent

B.How to produce the new material.

C.The benefits of the wood material.

    D.The great importance of innovation.

【4】What is the author's attitude towards transparent wood?

    A.Skeptical.

    B.Ambiguous.

    C.Conservative.

    D.Appreciative.

  • 24、Children grow quickly, especially their feet, but many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites from the soil.

An American man may have a solution for those barefoot kids a shoe that grows with the child. Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it is able to last so long.

It grows in three places: the front; it can also grow on the side with Velcro; and on the back with our buckle. It can last up to five years. The bottom is compressed rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather. The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14.

Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya. and there was a little girl in a white dress walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. They were just way too small for her feet. They were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?

However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. I kept writing down I should do this because of this or because of that. All these reasons why it really was important for me to try to make the shoes that could grow and try to help. Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise. I told myself I would not get new shoes until the idea was done. So, those are the shoes that I wore for a little over five years.

【1】Which of the following is the characteristic of the newly invented shoes?

    A. They are more expensive.

    B. They are not so comfortable.

    C. They can grow with a child.

    D. They come in different sizes.

【2】Who is this kind of newly invented shoes intended for?

    A. All the teenagers.

    B. Children aged 4 to 14.

    C. Middle-aged women in Africa.

    D. Senior citizens with low income.

【3】What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?

    A. How the shoes work.

    B. How Lee got his inspiration.

    C. How to make the new shoes.

    D. Where to order this kind of shoes.

【4】Why does Kenton Lee keep a pair of his own shoes in the office?

    A. To remind him of his promise.

    B. To copy the design of them.

    C. To get a change conveniently.

    D. To use them as an example.
