  • 21、Upon entering college, Yang Yi was uncertain about a lot of things. However, the 19-year-old international economics and trade student was certain about one thing: She wanted to participate in animal welfare efforts.

“I'm .always a nature and animal lover," she said. She joined the environmental protection  association at her school. Now being president of a group of 25, she leads its efforts to help  stray(流浪)cats and dogs by raising money to buy them food and collecting old clothes to  make them homes.

However, sometimes the association raises doubts. Some students have questioned whether  helping stray animals breaks the laws of nature. "We tried to resolve the controversy," Yang said. For wild animals, the best way to protect them is to preserve their environment and their natural  habitat, and to let them live their own way. However, for animals that depend heavily on humans, such as dogs and cats, the proper way to treat them is to respect them and take care of them." Besides, if not accommodated properly, stray animals can bring threats to public health, as  they are the main cause of rabies(狂犬病)in cities.  "Now, many young people in China  have agreed upon the need to strike a balance between humans and nature. The only problem is  how," said Yang. Yang and her fellow volunteers are cautious about what they do to help. For  instance, sometimes people feed stray cats human food such as chocolate. But Yang and her  friends point that such food can be dangerous to stray cats.

Yang also cooperates with Non-Governmental Organizations to spread animal protection  knowledge. One of their recent exhibits was about animals in the entertainment industry. "We  are still figuring out the best way to protect animals, but simple deeds such as saying no to animal  performances can prevent wildlife from being captured and tamed. Step by step, we'll eventually  reach our goal," she said.

【1】 Why did Yang Yi join the environmental protection association?

    A. She majored in a relevant field.

    B. She wanted to protect nature and animals.

    C. She was uncertain about her life.

    D. She intended to know about animal welfare.

【2】What do the group members do for stray animals?

    A. They shelter them with old clothes.

    B. They feed human food to them.

    C. They train them for entertainment.

D.They donate money to the association.

    【3】In paragraph 3,Yang believes that

    A. all animals should live naturally

    B. young people have known how to balance human and nature

    C. stray animals are bound to spread rabies

    D. chocolate is not a proper food for stray cats

【4】 What does Yang Yi think of her work?

    A.Enjoyable.    B .Doubtful.   C. Hopeful.   D. Awful.

  • 22、Imagine standing on one spot where the only direction is south. You can experience it if you join a group of just 128 passengers for your tip to the pole of the world. Your icebreaker ship, 50 Years of Victory, will take you to the North Pole, which is more commonly associated (联系) with fairy tales.

    Days 1&2--From Helsinki to Murmansk

Your adventure begins from Helsinki, Finland’s capital. From Helsinki, you’ll join your fellow passengers on the flight to Murmansk, Russia, where you’ll start your voyage to the North Pole and get to know 50 Years of Victory.

We’ll also attempt to send passengers high above the pole in our hot-air balloon to celebrate this great moment (highly weather dẹpendent).

Days 8 & 9--Travelling towards the south in the Arctic Ocean

As you head further south, you may get lucky and spot polar bears hunting for seals.

    Days 10 & 11--Franz Josef Land

This group of 191 islands lies entirely within the Arctic Circle. Here you’ll explore Cape Flora and discover historic remains from three ill-fated arctic adventures.

Days 12 & 13--Getting off Victory in Murmansk and flying to Helsinki

When you return to Murmansk, it will be time to say goodbye to 50 Years of Victory. You’ll be sent to the airport for your flight to Helsinki.

  • 23、While new phones are advertised as “water resistant (防水)”, this doesn't mean they are waterproof, or totally immune to water. Water resistance just implies the device can handle some exposure to water before substantial damage occurs.

The water resistance of phones is rated by an “ingress (进入) protection” code, commonly called an IP rating. The rating includes two numbers. The first demonstrates protection against solids such as dust, while the second indicates resistance to liquids, specifically water. a phone that has a rating of IP68 has a solid object protection of 6 (full protection from dust, dirt and sand) and a liquid protection of 8 (protected from immersion in water to a depth of more than one metre).

The popular iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S21 phones both have a rating of IP68. However, regarding exposure to water, the iPhone 12 has a permissible immersion depth of a maximum of 6m for 30 minutes whereas the Galaxy 21's immersion limit is up to 1. 5m, also for 30 minutes.

While IP ratings indicate the water-resistant nature of phones, taking most phones for a swim will land you in deep trouble. The salt content in oceans and swimming pools can corrode (腐蚀) our device and cost you a heavy replacement.

Then how to fix a water-logged phone? Follow these steps: First, turn off the device immediately and don’t press any buttons. then wipe the phone dry with paper towels or a soft cloth and gently shake the device to remove water from the charging ports. Next, remove the SIM card and dry out the phone in front of a fan. Do not charge the phone until you are certain it's dry.

If the above steps don’t help and you're still stuck with a seemingly dead device, don't try opening the phone yourself. You're better off taking it to a professional.

【1】What can you infer from Para. 2?

A.The water resistance of phones is evaluated by an IP rating.

B.The rating is made up of several numbers.

C.The first IP rating number indicates resistance to liquids.

D.A phone with a rating of IP68 has a solid protection of 8.

【2】What does the underlined word in Para. 4 refer to?

A.Things are not made by people.

    B.The way that things happen.

C.The way of an act of a person.

D.The basic qualities of a thing.

【3】What should we first do with a water-logged phone?

A.We should pick it up from the water.

B.We should ask a professional for help.

C.We should switch it off and don't use it.

D.We should wipe it dry with paper towels or a soft cloth.

【4】what is the passage mainly about?

A.It focuses on the meaning of IP rating.

B.It is mainly about the water resistance of a phone.

C.It is about the IP rating and solutions to a water-logged phone.

D.It mainly deals with the classification of water resistance phones.

  • 24、In India, one elegant live-work space by architecture firm Koshy shows how architects and designers can keep a measured balance between using new and recycled materials. Located in Kochi, in the southern state of Kerala, the Koshish building features repurposed materials like Mangalore tiles (瓷砖), steel, and windows—all from an abandoned textile factory situated about 5 miles away.

As the architect Charles Loeway explains, the inclusion of over 14,000 of these tiles not only refers to the storied history of this locally made material, but also underlines how there are still plenty of ecological benefits of using these more traditional components. “With much of Kerala giving up traditional terracotta tiles in favour of more contemporary materials, the significance of the age-old Mangalore tiles has been overlooked of late. Cooler temperatures, breathability (透气性) and a timeless appearance that’s easy on the eye are just few of the many advantages that the core material of the structure possesses,” he adds.

Mangalore tiles are named after the city of Mangalore in the neighboring state of Karnataka. This type of terracotta tile was first introduced to the subcontinent in the 1860s, by way of a German. Since then, these tiles have been manufactured (制造) locally and used extensively in India’s older government buildings, or exported off to Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Europe, Australia, and East Africa. They remain a popular choice for roofing, preferable over concrete due to their quality.

Obviously, Indian architects had all this in mind when making the decision to build many of the project’s walls with these distinctive tiles. Ultimately, this modern, yet down-to-earth project shows us that old can indeed become new and beautiful again.

【1】What can be learned about the buildings designed by Koshy?

A.Recycled materials are added to them.

    B.They totally use traditional materials.

C.All of their designers are from Germany.

D.An abandoned factory is similar to them.

【2】What does Charles Loeway mainly intend to tell us?

A.The goal of the architecture firm.

    B.The benefits of traditional materials.

    C.The feature of modern architecture.

D.The reasons for using modern materials.

【3】What can be inferred from paragraph 3?

A.An Indian first introduced Mangalore tiles.

B.The origin of the name of Mangalore tiles is unknown.

C.Mangalore tiles are of better quality than concrete for roofing.

D.Mangalore tiles are not allowed to be manufactured in India.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

A.Traditional Recycled Materials Used in India

B.The Problem With Many Modern Buildings

C.A Family Keen on Environmental Protection

D.New Exploration on Recycling Building Waste
