二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth. “Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth.

But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it. He was not so keen on heights as I was, she said. So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land.

Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider at the age of 80. Although some people get scared while flying, she said she just feels free. Thompson did her second paraglide when she turned 85, and raised nearly £2, 000 for a local charity.

Before leaving Interlaken after her second flight, Thompson asked the organizers about the age limit for paragliding. They said: “Any age, as long as you’re fit.” Thompson, now 86, plans her third flight for when she is 90.

Thompson grew up living above her parents’ shop in Belfast. At 18, she helped in the shop while studying for her music diploma in Stranmillis, south Belfast. She started to teach piano to local children, and at the height of her teaching she gave 70 lessons a week. She still has 15 pupils. “Over the years I’ve had so many that I’m teaching their children now.”

Is she scared of getting older? “Fear? No. People say: ‘Isn’t getting old awful?’ I say: ‘No. You are free to do more of the things that you want to do.’” “People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that doesn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.” Thompson added.

【1】What can we know about Thompson from the first two paragraphs?

    A.She appreciated being alone.

    B.She was crazy about paragliding.

    C.She often worked overtime.

D.She didn’t fit in with her husband.

【2】Which of the following best describes Thompson?

    A.Courageous and optimistic.

    B.Sensitive and open-minded.

    C.Romantic and cautious.

    D.Considerate and humorous.

【3】Why does the author mention Thompson’s words in the last paragraph?

    A.To compare different old people.

B.To inspire people to care for the old.

C.To show getting old isn’t so unpleasant.

D.To erase doubts about old people’s health.

【4】What can we learn from Thompson’s story?

    A.Aging makes a difference.

B.Time and tide wait for no man.

    C.Rome wasn’t built in a day.

D.It’s never too late to fulfill a dream.

  • 22、The Science of Fear

Home alone at night, you hear a loud crash. In an instant your heart starts racing, your muscles tense and your breath quickens. You are immediately alert, prepared to fight or flee the source of the sound, which tums out to be a pile of books falling off that shelf you've been meaning to fix. 【1】

Fear is one of our strongest and most basic emotions. It's a big bad world out there, and being afraid of certain things protects us from potential danger to make sure we survive. Some evolutionary fears are hard-wired into our brains, but we can also develop new fears throughout our lives. As children we pick up on what makes our parents anxious, and we may also learn to fear certain things after negative experiences. 【2】 We can enjoy the view from the top of a skyscraper rather than worry about falling, or turn out the light-safe in the knowledge that a wolf won't swallow us in the night.

However, people with phobias have an extreme fear response that causes both physical and psychological suffering. 【3】 Agoraphobia is generally referred to as the fear of open spaces, but it applies to the dread of any situation that is difficult to escape from, or where help would not be available if something went wrong. Social phobia is the intense fear of interacting with people or performing, while specific phobias are the fear of a particular situation, activity or thing. 【4】 Somebody with acrophobia - an extreme fear of heights — may experience a panic attacl, stmpl trying to walk across a bridge. Depending on the cause of their phobia, sufferers often try their best to avoid situations that could affect them.

【5】 For example, somebody may develop cynophobia— the fear of dogs—after being bitten. But whether the cause is rational (理性的) or irrational, as soon as the brain notices a scary stimulus (刺激物), it activates the fight-or-flight response, thus preparing the body for action.

A.Then, how can it be overcome?

B.These irrational fears can cause major disturbance to everyday life.

C.But in that moment, your brain and body reacted as if you were in extreme danger.

D.Despite this, most of us are able to ignore our fears when it's clear we aren't in any immediate danger.

E.Our brains warn us of the risks that might lie ahead, but then we often get prepared and overcome them.

F.These extreme fears are divided into three different groups: agoraphobia, social phobia and specific phobias.

G.The cause of phobias is not always clear, but many cases are linked to experiencing or witnessing unpleasant events.

  • 23、   When I was a child, our dining room had two kinds of chairs — two large ones with arm rests and four small ones without. The larger ones stood at the ends of the table, the smaller ones on the sides. Mom and Dad sat in the big chairs, except when one of us was away; then Mom would sit in one of the smaller chairs. Dad always sat at the end, at the "head" of the table. Sitting where he did, Dad was framed by the window through which the yard could be seen with its trees and grass. His chair was not just a place for him at table; it was a place in which he was situated against the yard and the trees. It was the holy(神圣的)and protected place that was his, and ours through him.

After Dad retired, he and Mom moved out into a small flat. When thy came to visit me at their old house, Dad still sat at the end of the table though the table was no longer his but mine. Only with my marriage to Barbara, did I hear a voice questioning the arrangement. She requested, gently but firmly, that I sit at the head of the table in our home. I realized then that I was head of the family, but I also felt unwilling to introduce such a change. How would I feel sitting in that "head" place in my Dad's presence? And how would he handle it? I was to find out on the occasion of our youngest child's first birthday.

Mom and Dad arrived for lunch, and went into the dining room. Dad moved toward his usual seat in front of the window. Before he could get around the side of the table, I took a deep breath and said, "Dad, this is going to be your place, next to Mom, on the side." He stopped, looked at me and then sat down. I felt sad, and angry at Barbara for pushing me to do this. It would have been easy to say, "My mistake, Dad. Sit where you always sit, ” But I didn't.

When he and Mom were seated, Barbara and I took our places. I don't know how Dad felt. I do know that, though removed from his usual place, he continued to share his best self with us, telling stories of his childhood and youth to the delight of his grandchildren. As I served the food, our lives experienced a change, which we continue to live with.

It wasn't easy, but I sense that there is also something good in the change which has occurred. I am beginning to learn that "honoring one's father” is more than the question of which place to occupy at the dining table. It also means listening, wherever we sit and whatever positions we own, to the stories Dad longs to tell We may then, during these magical moments, even be able to forget about whose chair is whose.

1Why did Dad always sit in the big chair at the end of the table before he retired?

A.Because the chair was large enough for him.

B.Because sitting there he could see the trees and grass in the yard.

C.Because it was the holy seat for the head of the family.

D.Because the chair was comfortable with arm rests.

2What do we know from the second paragraph?

A.The writer's parents moved out because the house was too old.

B.The writer didn't want to hurt his father’s feelings.

C.The writer's wife was rude to his parents.

D.The writer didn't dare to refuse his wife's request.

3Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Dad felt upset after being removed from his usual place.

B.The writer was satisfied with the new seating arrangement.

C.Dad continued to tell stories to cover his embarrassment.

D.Dad didn't appear to mind where he sat.

4What does the writer intend to tell us?

A.Respecting Dad is more than the question of dining seat.

B.It is not easy to go against parents' wishes.

    C.Think twice before you act.

    D.Every coin has two sides.
