二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Scientists have produced new evidence suggesting eating lots of red and processed meat damages health. They found big meat eaters had a raised risk of death from all causes over a 10-year period. In contrast, a higher intake of white meat was associated with a slightly reduced risk of death over the same period.

The US study, based on more than 500,000 people, found those whose diet contained the highest proportion (比例) of red or processed meat had a higher overall risk of death, and specifically a higher risk of cancer and heart disease than those who ate the least.

People eating the most meat were eating about 160g of red or processed meat per day— approximately a 6oz steak. Those who ate the least were only getting about 25g per day— approximately a small piece of bacon.Just the opposite, those who ate the highest proportion of white meat had a lower risk of overall death, and a lower risk of fatal cancer or heart disease than those who ate the lowest proportion.

Meat is a major source of saturated (饱和的) fat, which has been associated with breast and colorectal cancer. In addition, lower meat intake has been linked to a reduction in risk factors for heart disease, including lower blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. The latest study adds to a growing body of research linking high red and processed meat consumption to an increased risk of ill health.Ed Yong, of the charity Cancer Research UK, said, “Evidence from large studies tells us that cutting down on processed food, such as bacon or burgers, can reduce the risk of dying from cancer and other diseases.”

Dr Barry Popkin of the University of North Carolina stressed there were health benefits from eating some red meat. But he added: “The need is for a major reduction in total meat intake, an even larger reduction in processed meat and other highly processed and salted animal source food products and a reduction in total saturated fat.” Dr Mark Wahlqvist, a nutrition expert from Australia, said eating small amounts of red meat—around 30g a day—provided a good source of key nutrients. He said, “Fresh, lean red meat of these amounts is likely to be of more benefit than harm.”

【1】According to the passage, we know ______.

    A. big meat eaters eat a 6oz steak per day

    B. big meat eaters have heart disease ten years earlier

    C. people eating more meat will suffer from a heart attack

    D. people eating more red meat have a higher risk of death

    【2】Processed meat is a kind of ______.

    A. red meat

    B. white meat

    C. vegetable with a similar taste of meat

    D. meat prepared by producers

【3】According to the passage, how should we eat red meat in a healthy way?

    A. We should eat red meat as we like.

    B. We should eat proper amount of red meat per day.

    C. We should reduce the amount of fresh, red lean meat.

    D. We should completely cut out red meat from our diet.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. Too much red meat consumption contributes to ill health.

    B. A well-balanced diet accounts for a healthy life.

    C. A higher intake of white meat brings benefits.

    D. Red meat contains saturated fat.

  • 22、   Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. My parents divorced and I moved to a new town with my father, far from my old family and friends. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.

Cowboy was undoubtedly the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reason.

I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickersabout Cowboy’s looks. I never let on about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.

When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.

One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.

The stinging memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena. We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.

My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.

As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds!

I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

1The underlined expression “shown the gate” (paragraph 4) most probably means “_________”.

A.told how to enter the arena B.shown how to make the horse beautiful

C.removed from the competition early D.told to enter the timed-speed events

2Why was the writer not confident of victory?

    A.He was an inexperienced rider.

B.He believed he was unpopular with the crowd.

    C.He had not practiced enough.

D.He thought his horse wasn’t as good as the others.

3What did the writer learn from his experience?

    A.Life can sometimes be unfair.

B.Anything is possible if one tries hard enough.

C.A positive attitude will bring success.

D.One should not make judgments based on appearance.

4The best title for the story is ________.

    A.A Run to Remember B.A Horse’s Tale

C.Neck and Neck D.A Difficult Age

  • 23、The driver who cuts you off in traffic. The neighbors who don't pick up after their dog.Situations such as these get our hearts racing and send our stress levels skyrocketing.Anger isn't a pleasant feeling. Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others explode in a wild rage (狂怒).Both habits do considerable harm to our bodies, our minds, and our relationships.

“Anger may fee1 uncomfortable and a lot of people think they have to get rid of their anger," says Patrick Keelan, a registered psychologist in Calgary, Alberta.“But anger is an emotion built into us to signal that something needs to be addressed. When we take notice of that signal and actually wrestle with the problem instead of turning a blind eye to it, we' re usually much better for it.”

Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to keep our emotions hidden.Increasingly, research is suggesting that this can have long-term effects on our health.Investigators at the University of Rochester noticed that people who contain their emotions tend to live shorter lives. When we're angry, stress hormones are released, which can make us more likely to develop a wide range of diseases, including diabetes, depression, immune related conditions.

Is it better, then, to scream and howl whenever something makes you mad? That's probably the reason why“rage rooms" have popped up in many American cities, where folks are invited to let steam off by violently smashing (打碎) stuff in a“safe" environment. However, the research indicates that when people display anger aggressively, it can actually increase the intensity of the anger -- and increase the likelihood of aggressive actions in the future. It doesn't take much imagination to predict how such behavior can affect your relationship with your spouse, your kids, or your colleagues. It also hurts your health.A large 2016 study at McMaster University found that people are more than twice as likely to have a heart attack after an angry explosion.

If we shouldn't bottle up our angry feelings but aggressive behavior isn't healthy either, how should we handle things that tick us of? It's the extreme highs and lows that cause the damage. If you're able to apply techniques that smooth out some of those peaks and valleys, you can have a gentler ride.

【1】What does the underlined phrase“bottle up" in paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Build up.

    B.Hold back.

    C.Let off.

    D.Bring out.

【2】What does Patrick Keelan think of anger?

    A.Uncomfortable and avoidable.

    B.Terrible and threatening.

    C.Confusing and complex.

    D.Normal and natural.

【3】What is the consequence of displaying anger aggressively?

    A.It leads to people's depression.

    B.It warns people against violence.

    C.It adds to people's anger.

D.It helps people to calm down.

【4】What will be talked about if the passage is continued?

    A.Possible causes of anger.

    B.Tips on handling anger.

    C.Possible harm of anger.

    D.Tips on avoiding anger.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

If you plan to learn a foreign language, you might think it's going to be really challenging. You've probably heard a lot of talks about how it's easier to learn languages as a young child, and that learning as an adult can be difficult. You might even know friends or family members who have tried to learn a foreign tongue and failed. That's because they are surrounded by the failure. We're here to cheer you up with some good news and inspire you to get started.

Can you learn languages at any age?Scientists are always learning about human brain.Decades ago, experts believed that the brain developed during childhood and then stayed that way for life. However, modern studies have shown us that the brain has the ability to continually form new neural(神经系统的)connections throughout adulthood.A 2010 Swedish study tested two groups of people, one in the range of age 21 through 30 and another between 65 and 80.Surprisingly,they found no significant differences in neuroplasticity(神经可塑性).In other words, this suggests that it's possible for you to learn new things at any age.

Research also suggests.that learning languages throughout adulthood improves the adult brain in general. In a 2012 Chinese study, experts looked at a group of adults who were learning Mandarin(普通话)over a nine-month period. They found that these adults showed improvement in the part of the brain that allows neural cells to communicate. The better your neural cells communicate, the easier it will be for you to learn new things.

Why may adults have an easier time learning?Children might have a naturally high degree of neuroplasticity, but that doesn't mean learning is necessarily easier for them.In fact, adult brains have a number of great qualities that, might actually make learning easier, especially if you take advantage of free language learning apps like Mondly.
