二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Eggs-perimenting with eggs

What can you do with eggs other than eat them?

    Naked Eggs

What does an egg look like without its shell? You may be picturing the white and yolk in a bowl after cracking it, but that isn’t the only way to remove the shell.

Materials: an egg, white vinegar, a bowl, a spoon

Directions: Fill a bowl with one cup of vinegar. Add the egg to the bowl, and wait at least 24 hours. When you check it after a day, you’ll notice some bubbles on the egg and a residue (残留物) in the water. Use the spoon to gently remove the egg from the bowl. Dump out the old vinegar, and add a cup of fresh vinegar. Return the egg to the bowl, and wait another 24 hours. When you remove the egg this time, the shell should be completely dissolved. What remains will be the contents of the egg.

    Walking on Eggshells

Can Eggs hold the weight of your entire body?

Materials: six cartons (硬纸盒) of eggs, a garbage bag

Directions: Place the garbage bag on the floor to make any necessary clean up easier. Place the cartons of eggs into two rows of three. Make sure all the eggs are pointing in the same direction— either all pointy end up or all rounded end up. Step onto the first carton of eggs carefully. Make sure your foot is as flat as possible and that you are distributing your weight evenly. If you’re careful, you will succeed. Eggs are actually incredibly strong. The arch shape at the top and the bottom of the egg allows pressure to be distributed evenly over the egg. If you were to place the eggs on their sides instead, you’d be likely to wind up with a gooey (胶粘的) mess.

【1】In the first experiment, what causes the eggshell to dissolve?

    A.Vinegar.

    B.Water.

    C.Bubbles.

    D.Residue

【2】What makes the eggs strong enough to walk across?

    A.The position of eggs.

    B.The number of eggs.

    C.The weight of eggs.

    D.The distribution of eggs.

【3】What was the author’s purpose in writing this text?

A.To persuade readers to use eggs in new ways.

B.To entertain readers with funny use for eggs.

C.To tell readers some ways to experiment with eggs.

D.To inspire readers to conduct experiments carefully.

  • 22、Some countries build palaces or temples as monuments to their greatness. Singapore builds hawker centers. Put casually on a plate or banana leaf are the dishes such as Indian roti prata and Singapore laksa which are mixed with what is from Malaysia.

And since one can eat one’s fill in a hawker center at a reasonable price, it is no surprise that eight in ten Singaporeans visit such places at least once a week, according to a survey conducted by the National Environment Agency in 2018. Singapore is so proud of its street food that it hopes UNESCO will include it in its catalogue of humanity’s most precious arts.

The UN’s heritage inspectors had better hurry. The average age of the chefs is 60, so sustaining the hawker trade in the long run is hard. When old chefs pass away, many take their recipes with them, says K.F. Seetoh. Only Singaporean citizens can work in hawker centers managed by the government. But young Singaporeans have little appetite for working in piping-hot stalls for long hours and little pay.

The few young Singaporeans willing to put up with such conditions often live hand-to-mouth. When Yu Ting Gay and Alex Ho opened their Italian-Japanese fusion stall in 2017, they hoped to earn $1,474 a month each. Most of the time they made half that. “Our pockets were quite tight,” says Ms. Yu.

Older hawkers have an unfair advantage. Many of those pay discounted rents: $200 a month on average. They still account for 55% of the 5,500 stalls rented by the government. But a report published by the Ministry of Trade in 2015 found that even though younger hawkers have an average 15% higher operating costs, they do not pass them on to their customers, which is discouraged by the government too.

【1】What can we know from the first two paragraphs?

A.The hawker centers were built together with palaces and monuments.

B.Singapore’s street food has already been included in UNESCO’s category.

C.80% of the Singaporeans visit hawker centers every day.

D.The street food in Singapore shows the combination of different cultures.

【2】What can we know about the Singapore’s street food now?

A.Most of the experienced chefs give their recipes to the young hawkers.

B.The street food in Singapore will have a promising future.

C.The young generation are unwilling to take over the job.

D.The foreigners are not allowed to work in hawker centers.

【3】Which of the following statements is true?

A.It is easier for older hawkers to run their business.

B.The government encourages hawkers to raise food price.

C.The young hawkers charge more money for the higher costs.

D.The young hawkers lead a comfortable life in Singapore

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A.A young idler, an old beggar.

    B.Strive things will succeed.

    C.Out with the new.

    D.The pupil surpasses the master.

  • 23、When we think of humor, we generally think about entertainment - enjoying a stand-up comedy or watching a funny film. But psychologists believe humor can also help improve our mental health and promote social bonding.

Rod Martin at the University of Western Ontario examined the relation-ship between a sense of humor and psychological wellbeing. He found individuals with a good sense of humor had higher levels of self-esteem (自尊), were more positive in the face of challenging life events, and had more self-protective ways of coping with stress

However, this finding is only corelational. It could be that a good sense of humor fosters the positive qualities, and that high levels of self-esteem and a positive mindset may be what allows an individual to develop a good sense of humor. To prove it, researchers randomly appointed 55 adults to three courses: a humor group, a social group, and a control group. At the end of the courses, those in the humor group scored significantly higher on levels of emotional wellbeing and showed decreased levels of stress and anxiety. The researchers also tested the effects of attending parties as well as watching comedies and funny films. They found that these positive social activities also made these adults more humorous and welcome.

Wellbeing in the workplace can also be increased by humor. Both Eric Romero and Kevin Cruthirds at the University of Texas found encouraging moments of jokes among colleagues were generally associated with increased work performance and decreased reports of stress. However, they also raise a caution: any positive result depends on the jokes in question. That the type of humor is key to its benefits clarifies why positive findings in this area are often weak or unclear. As some researchers wisely point out, the problem is that too few of them begin by defining clearly what humor is. He believes there are two types: adaptive and maladaptive (适应不良的).

Adaptive humor encourages us to feel closer to others and better about ourselves, whereas maladaptive humor is self-defeating, rude and aggressive. Maladaptive humor leads only to lower self-esteem and a distance between you and your colleagues.

The conclusion? Humor can definitely help you, not only with your mental wellbeing, but also with your colleague relationships - only if it's adaptive, self-enhancing and acceptable. All in all, kindness is the key.

1What did Rod Martin find about humorous people?

    A. They liked seeing funny performances.

    B. They used humor to increase self-esteem.

    C. They tended to enjoy better mental health.

    D. They attached more importance to self-protection.

2By saying the underlined part in Paragraph 3, the author wants to show   .

    A. humor and positive qualities affect each other

    B. humor plays a role only in certain cases

    C. the finding needs to be further improved

    D. there's still strong argument on the finding

3According to Paragraph 4 , why are positive findings about office humor often weak?

    A. Workplace is a special place for people to tell jokes.

    B. There are too many factors affecting the results.

    C. There's not enough evidence to show its effects.

    D. Different types of humor may have different effects.

4What is suggested by the author about humor?

    A. Put yourself in others' shoes when telling jokes.

    B. Avoid hurting others when telling jokes.

    C. Pay attention to the occasion of your jokes.

    D. Get used to others' jokes about you.

5Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

    C. ①②--④⑤-   D. -②③-④⑤-

  • 24、We regularly hear how important consumer spending is for the economy. The story goes like this: the more consumers spend, the more money circulates in the economy, which contributes to healthy job growth and profits. Keynes, a British economist, went as far as to say that individuals saving their money may actually be hurting the economy. Sounds troubling, doesn’t it?

Fear not. You aren’t actually hurting anyone else by saving money. Strong economic growth only comes from the place: savings. Not consumption. In fact, economic activity should not be mistaken for economic growth. For example, somebody takes their money, walks into a store, and purchases goods. The store increases its revenue.

But what happens to all of those goods and services that people have chosen not to consume by saving their money? Simple: other people are allowed to consume them. Think of it this way: when you lend out your savings, you are actually saying, “Here, I am not going to consume right now, so why don’t you?” Banks simply play the middleman: they collect lots of people's savings and then lend out lots of funds.

It takes an unbelievable amount of goods and services to construct a building. It takes food, shelter, and entertainment for all of the workers, as well. Without savings, it is quite impossible to finance such a construction. The coordination between savings and consumption is a necessary basis for sound economic growth. This coordination is also why consumer lending (say, to borrow a big sum of money to buy a car) is not productive, in a strict sense. It doesn't increase the net (净的) amount of wealth of an economy. Those savings could have been used to construct, say, factory equipment.

None of this means consumption and spending are “bad” things. They simply do not make us wealthier. After all, the final goal of production and savings is to consume. But to say that consumption is the engine of economic growth is to put the cart before the horse. Or, to rephrase: the consumption of wealth can never make you wealthier. Happier, perhaps. Wealthier, no.

【1】What is the author’s attitude towards Keynes’ theory?

    A. Approving. B. Reserved.

    C. Uncertain.   D. Critical.

【2】 The underlined word “revenue” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_______”.

    A. cost   B. reputation

    C. income   D. interest

【3】 According to the author, which chart could show the effect of savings on economy?

    ../../../documents%20and%20settings/administrator/local%20settings/application%20data/360chrome/chrome/User%20Data/temp/2014122517370727.png

【4】What would be the best title for this passage?

    A. The Saving Behavior of the Economy

    B. Consumption: a Key Concept in Economy

    C. Consumer Spending and Economic Growth

    D. The Truth about Savings and Consumption

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    To Be A Creative Person

Without creative people, the world would be a terrible place. Can you imagine a life without art? The thought alone makes me tremble. Could you be the next William Shakespeare, Steven Spielberg, or J.K. Rowling?

Creative types don’t always get along well with management because they would rather march to the beat of their own drum. Most people have a strong desire to fit in, something that you don’t understand. Following the rules makes you uncomfortable. While most people are running and hiding from problems, you purposely seek them because you love nothing more than a fresh new challenge.

You wrote a blog many months ago and thought it was wonderful at the time you published it. But then you read it again later and wonder, “What on earth was I thinking?” You then identify approximately a thousand ways it could have been better and kick yourself for being so stupid. A brain lacking curiosity is not creative.

Some writers go to a country house or beach to write novels for a reason. Some atmospheres are more helpful to creativity than others. Maybe you like to pack up your laptop and go to a coffee shop, downtown bench, or under a tree at the park. Whatever the case may be, you need to know where to go to develop your creativity.

Inspiration doesn’t happen on its own. Whether it is the opening of an art gallery, a theatrical production, or live music at a downtown bar, you search for inspiration wherever you can find it. It’s nice to know you’re not alone in your desire to create. Whether a person who hates you thinks your art is bad, a family member thinks you deserve a real job, or a friend thinks your ideas will never work, and you will never give in to outside pressure.
