  • 28、Slowly, so slowly that we never even noticed how it happened that our family stopped talking to each other. Our own worlds opened up to us through the computer or the cell phone or the CD player.

Family Night was born when Mom called us for dinner. Jessica and I came and sat down. Dad finished his eating and started to rise from the table.

“Where are you going?” Mom questioned.

“To the living room. I have some work.” Dad replied as he hurried away. Mom’s face got tight, but she said nothing. About two minutes later, my cell phone buzzed. Jessica kept her earphones on during most of the meal. Mom was clearly upset.

Family Night started the next week. Mom made three rules: no phones, no music, and no leaving the table. Everyone would eat together and play a game together “like a real family.”

All seemed to be going according to Mom’s plan until the first buzz of a cell phone. After dinner, we had been playing the board game for only ten minutes when another cell phone rang. This time the phone ring belonged to my father.

“Work’s calling. I have to answer.” he whispered as he hurried out of the room.

Mom sighed, but she forced a smile and encouraged us to continue the game. We kept playing through every interruption (中断) afterwards: the beeping of Jessica’s phone, the buzz of another text message from Darnell, the soothing (舒缓的) voice announcing the arrival of an e-mail on Dad’s computer. When the game was over, Mom freed us to our rooms.

That first Family Night was not a success, but Mom soldiered on (坚持着干). Every Monday evening we silenced our electronics and gathered around the table, and each time, setting aside our technological toys became a little easier. The next two months my father would be taking business trips. We wouldn’t be able to have Family Night every Monday.

To my surprise, I realized that I would miss those few hours each week when the house was filled with my family’s laughter and conversation. I was also glad to know that when we really wanted to, we could silence the electronic buzz and just be a family again.

  • 29、What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed (展示) at the entrance? Or the soft background music?

But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.

A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.

When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.

Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce电子商务) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.

Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

【1】 E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ .

    A. introduce the rise of e-commerce

    B. urge shop assistants to change their attitude

    C. push stores to use sights and sounds

    D. show the advantages of brick-and-mortar stores

【2】 The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means _______ .

    A. a platform that exhibits goods

    B. a spot where travelers like to stay

    C. a place where customers love to go

    D. a target that a store expects to meet

【3】The main purpose of the passage is to ______ .

    A. compare and evaluate B. inform and explain

    C. examine and assess D. argue and discuss

【4】 According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?

    A. Unique scents. B. Friendly assistant.

    C. Soft background music   D. attractive window display.

Near the small town of Grottoes, Virginia, a narrow dirt road goes from the house of Stephen Curry’s grandfather to the woods nearby. A far cry from the bright lights and shiny ___of the National Basketball Association (NBA), it was along this road that Stephen’s grandfather built a simple basket by___a piece of plastic to a telephone pole.

Like his father, basketball star Dell Curry, Stephen spent many childhood hours playing on this muddy basketball court. He probably didn’t realize it at the time, but it was ___he learned to be creative and flexible as a player. You see, with every ___, the weak plastic backboard gave way. The bumps and rocks that lined the road under the basket caused the ball to bounce in all directions. Knowing where the ball would go wasn’t easy. He had to ___his own playing style as a result. Shooting with great___ was another thing he learned. Only shots perfectly aimed at its centre went into the heavy, thick basket. In this way, practising day in and day out helped Stephen ___his skills.

Despite his father’s successful career, Stephen was thought by many people, including his high school teammates and coaches, to be too short, too thin and too weak to follow in his father’s footsteps. His creativity and perseverance made him Davidson’s star player.

___ for the NBA in 2009, Stephen joined the Golden State Warriors. He performed beyond everyone’s expectations with his accurate shooting and continuous efforts. In 2015, Stephen won his first NBA championship, and he led the Warriors to their first championship since 1975.

After receiving the Most Valuable Player award for two years ___, Stephen explained his philosophy, “I never really set out to change the game... What I wanted to do was just be myself... I know it _________ a lot of the next generation, a lot of people who love the game of basketball to value the ___ of it, value the fact that you can work every single day to get better. You’ve got to be able to put in the time and the work. That’s how I got here. That’s how I continue to get better every single day.” Inspiring others to believe in themselves, Stephen Curry is living ___that what other people think of you does not have to influence what you become. • 31、DirectionsComplete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Cure isn’t a word normally used in the 1 of AIDS. For most of the 35 years since HIV, the virus responsible for the disease, was first identified, doctors have viewed the notion of a cure as more 2 than fact.

That’s because HIV is a virus unlike any other. It disables the very immune cells that are 3 to destroy it, carrying out the ultimate deadly ambush(埋伏)whenever the guard of immune 4 comes down, months or sometimes even years later.

Yet for the first time in the HIV epidemic that 5 affects nearly 37 million people worldwide, some experts are starting to aim for a cure cautiously. The National Institutes of HealthNIHis funding HIV cure efforts and advocacy groups like amfAR are also 6 resources into not just treating HIV, but also finding ways to eliminate it completely.

“Absolutely HIV can be cured,”says Rowena Johnston, vice president and director of research for amfAR.“The question is how.”

Doctors today have no trouble keeping HIV under control in people who are infected, thanks to antiretroviralARVdrugs, which stop the virus from replicating(复制). If it is not making more copies of itself. HIV cannot spread to infect new cells. That can 7 into healthier, longer lives for people who are HIV-positive.

Powerful as the current drug treatments are, they can’t actually 8 the body of infected cells. For self-preservation, some HIV lies latent(潜伏性的)inside certain immune cells. These are the viruses that come coaring back when people stop taking their medications.

But the latest report this month revealed the strongest evidence that these latent viruses can be activated and eliminated, at least in animals. Dr. Dan Barouch and his colleagues showed that a drug that stimulates the immune system, 9 with a powerful antibody, prevented HIV from roaring back in five of 11 animals, six months after they stopped taking ARVs.“I think our data raises the 10 that an intervention achieving a functional cure is possible,”says Barouch.
