二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The British live on a small island. They are surrounded by the sea, so it is not surprising that the sea has always played an important role in their lives. After the development of large, oceangoing sailing ships in the fifteenth century, the sea became even more important to the country’s development. Ships setting sail from England determined to extend Britain’s territories, its wealth and its knowledge of the world. Ships returned to England bringing goods, people and new ideas from foreign places. By the nineteenth century, Britain had the largest, most powerful navy in the world.

The great sailing ships were so much a part of British life that they even affected the language. Many English expressions we use today were originally nautical (航海的) terms, although most people no longer realize this. For example, people commonly describe an honest and fair business deal as being “above board”. This expression was originally used in sailing ship times when secretive, dishonest ship’s business would be carried out below decks (below the boards) out of public view. On the other hand, honest business was always conducted on deck (above the boards), in the open where everyone could see what was going on.

“Pipe down!”, meaning “Be quiet!”, is another common expression that has nautical origins. The ship’s boatswain (水手长) would blow a whistle, or pipe, at the end of the day to indicate (表明) to the sailors it was time to quieten down and go to sleep.

Most native English speakers have heard the expression “not enough room to swing a cat”, but few know that the “cat” does not refer to a small furry animal with four legs and a tail. The “cat” is actually a short form of “cat of nine tails” — a whip with nine, knotted (打结的) tails. A boatswain needed a lot of space in order to swing the whip properly when lashing (鞭打) a poor sailor under his control!

【1】The British have been strongly influenced by the sea because ________.

A.they occupied more land around the world

B.they got more wealth from the sea

C.they live on an island surrounded by the sea

D.they had the largest navy ever

【2】If someone is open and above board, it means he is ________.

    A.secretive

    B.honest

    C.cheerful

    D.dishonest

【3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Sailors need to go to sleep when they hear a whistle.

B.Sailors will be whipped if they do business below decks.

C.A poor sailor may be whipped nine times a day.

D.There is no spare room to raise cats on ships.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The business on British sailing ships.

B.The influence of British sailors’ language on English.

    C.The sailing history of England.

D.The sailing story of British sailors.

    _______________________________________________________________________________

    Dear Susan,

Please forward this message to students of my history class.

Besides the life story of Rosa Parks in the textbook, the students are also required to read the passage below and some related stories that can be borrowed from the school library.

    Ted Hume

The early experiences of Rosa Parks(1913-2005), long known as the “mother of the civil rights movement,” were not different from those of many African-Americans at that time. The black woman, however, turned the course of American history in December 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. “By sitting down, ” remarked John Lewis, “She was standing up for all Americans.”

Among the numerous awards Parks received in her life were the Presidential Medal of Freedom(1996) and the Congressional Gold Medal(1999).

Parks died on Oct. 24, 2005. At St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Montgomery, a large crowd including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice celebrated her life. Rice said she and others, who grew up when the political activities of Parks held public attention, might not have realized her impact on their lives, “but I can honestly say that without Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here as Secretary of State.”

After her casket(灵柩) was placed at the Capitol, U.S. President Bush, members of Congress and ordinary Americans paid their respects. In American history Parks is the first woman to lie in state at the Capitol, a very high regard usually reserved for Presidents of the United States.

【1】What is the main purpose of Susan’s email?

A.To introduce to the students Rosa Parks.

B.To help the students organize a lecture.

C.To answer Professor Hume’s last email.

D.To make arrangements for Professor Hume’s class.

【2】What does the underlined word “forward” mean?

    A.Read.  B. Explain.  C. Send.  D. Take.

【3】The political impact of Rosa Parks lies in the fact that she ________.

A.joined the civil rights movement at a young age

B.made racial equality a common value in American society

C.helped Condoleezza Rice achieve political success

D.set a good example in her early life for other black Americans

4】How was Rosa Parks treated after her death?

A.She was honored to lie in state at the Capitol.

B.She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

C.She was received by President Bush at the Capitol.

D.She was named “mother of the civil rights movements.”

  • 28、Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings. A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.

In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.

Millions of people know a way to save a person who is choking on something trapped in the throat. The method is commonly known as the Heimlich Maneuver or abdominal thrusts(腹部按压), which you can do by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person. Put your arms around the victim’s waist. Close one hand to form a ball. Place it over the upper part of the stomach, below the ribs. Place the other hand on top. Then push forcefully inward and upward. Repeat the abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled from the mouth. For someone who is pregnant or very fat, place your hands a little higher than with normal abdominal thrusts.

Red Cross experts say taking these steps can save many lives. But they also warn that abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned. They say use of the method could delay other ways to re-start breathing in the victim. Abdominal thrusts should be used only in cases where a near-drowning victim is choking on an object.

To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for information. There may be training classes offered in your area.

1According to the first paragraph, which of the following is NOT the common cause of accidental poisonings?

    A. A harmful medicine   B. A cleaning liquid

    C. Poisonous insects   D. Dangerous pesticide(杀虫剂)

2The underlined word “expelled” can be replaced by “ ”.

    A. coming out   B. taking up

    C. going away   D. getting down

3Why abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned?

    A. Because people are unwilling to attempt rescue efforts

    B. Because it is hard to perform

    C. Because it is no need to do so

    D. Because it could hold up other ways to re-start breathing in the victim

4What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?

    A. To promote medical research

    B. To share some knowledge about first aid

    C. To show how to perform abdominal thrusts

    D. To help people deal with accidental poisoning

  • 29、Maths and Music

An excellent way to kill a conversation is to say you are a mathematician. Tell others you are also a musician, however, and they will be hooked. Although there are obvious similarities between mathematical and musical activity, there is no direct evidence for the kind of magical connection many people seem to believe in.

I’m partly referring here to the “Mozart effect”, where children who have been played Mozart compositions are supposedly more intelligent, including at maths, than other children. It is not hard to see why such a theory would be popular: we would all like to become better at maths without putting in any effort. But the conclusions of the experiment that expressed the belief in the Mozart effect were much more modest. If you want your brain to work better, you clearly have to put in hard work. As for learning to play the piano, it also takes effort.

Surely a connection is quite reasonable. Both maths and music deal with abstract structures, so if you become good at one, then it is likely that you become good at something more general that helps you with the other. If this is correct, it would show a connection between mathematical and musical ability. It would be more like the connection between abilities at football and tennis. To become better at one, you need to improve your fitness and coordination (协调). That makes you better at sport and probably helps with the other.

Abstract structures don’t exist only in maths and music. If you learn a language then you need to understand its abstract structures like grammar. Yet we don’t hear people asking about a connection between mathematical and linguistic (语言的) ability. Maybe this is because grammar feels mathematical, so it wouldn’t be surprising that mathematicians were better at learning grammar. Music, however, is strongly tied up with feelings and can be enjoyed even by people who know little about it. As such, it seems different from maths, so there wouldn’t be any connection between the two.

Let’s see how we solve problems of the “A is to B as C is to D kind. These appear in intelligence tests but they are also central to both music and maths. Consider the opening of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (小夜曲). The second phrase is a clear answer to the first. The listener thinks: “The first phrase goes upward and uses the notes of a G major chord (和弦); what would be the corresponding phrase that goes downward and uses the notes of a D7?” Music is full of puzzles like this. If you are good at them, expectations will constantly be set up in your mind. The best moments surprise you by being unexpected, but we need the expectations in the first place.

【1】What does the author say about “Mozart effect”?

A.The goal of it was not carefully thought about.

B.The interest people showed in it was unexpected.

C.The way it was carried out proved to be ineffective.

D.The findings from it gave people wrong information.

【2】The author mentioned football and tennis in Paragraph 3 to show that ______.

A.music and maths have something in common

B.football and tennis are played in a similar way

C.certain skills may be developed through practice

D.abstract structures bring benefits to various fields

【3】We can infer from Paragraph 4 that ______.

A.language is less attractive to learners

B.mathematicians are good at music learning

C.language seems more like maths than music does

D.the structure of language is easier to learn than that of music

【4】What is the writer’s main purpose in the last paragraph?

A.To prove how music finally differs from maths.

B.To describe the mathematical processes musicians may have.

C.To show how abstract thinking applies to both music and maths.

D.To explain why Mozart is so highly considered by mathematicians.
