二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、For most people, growing older means getting weaker. But this is far from the case of this 83-year-old woman Ernestine Shepherd, one of the world’s oldest female bodybuilders. Born in 1936, she is still exercising and working out, keeping up her strength, and looking absolutely fit!

Her journey to fitness all began when she turned 56. “I seldom worked out—you couldn’t get me away from chocolate cake. But that day, my sister and I went shopping for swimsuits. I looked in the changing room mirror and realized that I was getting out of shape and needed to start exercising,” she told BBC.

She started with simple training and eventually shifted to bodybuilding and weight lifting. She then decided that she should try to get into the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest bodybuilder on the planet.

Though the idea seemed big, it was something that was worth working towards. Ernestine trained harder. At the age of 71, she took part in her first bodybuilding competition and won the top prize! Her dream finally came true—Guinness contacted her and officially honored her as the world’s oldest female bodybuilder. A year later, she lost the title but remained to be one of the world’s oldest female bodybuilders.

She is now retired from competing but she is still into bodybuilding. Her extraordinary diet includes egg, chicken, and turkey. She has inspired so many people with her journey, and many come up to her and ask for advice. • 27、   Growing up in Venezuela, there was never really much cause to learn English. For five years, I spent two hours a week completely involved in understanding "to be", numbers, colors, and the differences between saving “good evening” and “good night”. I would always get top marks. Yes, that used to be me, walking like a queen among everyday, Spanish speakers. “Bring it on, life.” I said. “I can deal with whatever you've got.”

But when I moved to Canada, life hit me so hard that it knocked me down. Years later, I am still recovering. Living in a new land, with different people, new rules, new weather, a new culture and language, 1 was no longer a queen. Did I speak English? No, not at all. So, I went back to school, thinking that it was a challenge I would conquer in record time. But English was more like a wall in my path. Even after getting a job, it took all my courage to stop myself from crying, completely at a loss and scared. Learning English, speaking, listeningit hurt me. Not the language. Not the unkind people. It hurt because I wasn't good, despite my efforts.

Now, after almost seven years in Canada, I've decided not to say sorry for my accent. grammar mistakes, or pronunciation. I'm going to run after my dreams and enjoy a beautiful, rich and fascinating language. Don't get me wrong. My brain still screams “Give me a break!" from time to time, but that's completely natural. I know it's going to take a while, but at least now I accept the person I am not the perfect person I thought I was.

  • 28、When people think of winter sports, they usually think of ice skating, skiing or snowboarding. Without doubt, these are some of the most popular winter sportsalthough, thanks to man-made snow we can play most of these sports all year round!

Last weekend, I went snowshoeing with a group of teachers from my school. Although I had walked in very deep snow almost two years ago, I had never tried snowshoeing before. A snowshoe is, actually, a large plastic frame(框架) which you fix to your own shoes. The snowshoe increases the surface area of your feet, therefore making you less likely to sink in the snow.

At first, it felt a little strangea bit like wearing flippers(脚蹼)when you swim! I felt quite uncomfortable to start with, and it was difficult to climb over the fallen trees with the snowshoes fixed to my feet. However, I love hiking and am used to walking in mountainous areas so I soon got used to it. I loved walking through the forest and seeing all the trees covered in snow! At times, walking uphill in the snow was hard, especially when there were rocks under the snow. That said, once we reached the top it was worth it! The mountain we climbed was called “Le Tanet” and it was 1,292m high. That’s higher than Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales! The sky was a bit grey, but the views were fantastic. I managed to get some great photos. After taking lots of photos, we started the descent. In some ways, going down the mountain was harder than going up. It was easy to slip in the snow.

At the bottom, we had a hot drink in a small wood house. It was surely needed after a few hours of walking in the cold! Before we went home, I had a go at sledging(乘雪橇), which I’d never tried before! It was great fun!

Overall, I’d really suggest snowshoeing as an alternative(替代物) to the more well-known winter sports. Besides being a lot cheaper than skiing, it’s easier and is considered to be a lot safer!

【1】The author soon got used to walking with the snowshoes because he ________.

    A.had experience in ice skating

B.often climbed trees in the forest

C.was good at swimming with flippers

D.often went hiking in mountainous areas

【2】What does “the descent” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Going down the mountain.

    B.Taking a lot of photos.

    C.Enjoying the beautiful scenery.

    D.Falling down in the snow.

【3】What does the author think of snowshoeing at last?

    A.Fun.

    B.Uncomfortable.

    C.Dangerous.

    D.Practical.

【4】What type of writing is this text?

    A.A sports report.

    B.An advertisement for sledge.

    C.A personal experience.

    D.A travel guide.

  • 29、   The importance of reading literature often seems lost on many Chinese people. Even experts in education think that the first goal of education is to encourage a love of learning. There is therefore the possibility of something wrong with the way students are taught here.

Why should they read literature? Do stories have value compared with the reading and learning of facts? Studies show clearly that the most powerful ways of learning are by experience, action and doing experiments and taking risks. Yet there are so many important things to learn that cannot be learned in these ways: feelings, problem solving, danger and relationships, for example. Research into this has shown how deep reading is a valuable experience different to a learning of words or facts. Keen( 热心的) readers of -literature show a better understanding of others. Their abilities to make good decisions are raised. Young children who enjoy a parent reading stories to them show greater awareness(意识) when they reach school age.

The best schools do seem to provide a limited (有限的) chance to enjoy literature, usually about the Chinese classic stories but there is not enough "free" time for students. There are enough reading materials (材料). Chinese book shops are full of story books, and most of them are of good quality (质量) in terms of content, plot (情节) and language. Was there not a Chinese author who received a Nobel Prize for literature recently? There are moves in Chinese education to promote (提升) decision making and shared values. The value of literature is helpful to these as well as to the future of China.

1What does the author think of the way students are educated in China?

    A.He is proud of it.

    B.He is interested in it.

    C.He doesn't quite accept it.

    D.He is confident about it.

2Which is not among the most powerful ways of learning according to paragraph 2?

    A.By experience.

    B.By taking risks.

    C.By reading deeply.

    D.By doing experiments.

3What can be learned from the last paragraph?

A.Reading literature helps develop good values.

B.Chinese students like reading stories as they get older.

C.Stories in Chinese bookstores are generally of  poor quality.

D.Chinese students have no chance to read enough materials.

4What's the main idea of the text?

A.Literature is a kind of art.

    B.Reading literature should be valued.

C.Good reading materials are in great need.

D.Something is wrong with Chinese education.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 30、For most people, the longest relationship they will have is with their sibling(兄弟姐妹). It’s a shame, then, that we can’t choose them. As children, my younger sister and I were always _________with each other. I was jealous of her looks and she felt threatened by my academic success. But our rivalry(竞争)was _________compared to that of some famous siblings.

Take 1940s movie stars Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine. The competitive relationship between these sisters is the stuff of Hollywood legend. “I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia did. And if I die first, she will ___________be angry because I beat her to it,” Joan wrote in her autobiography. Their rivalry became very _________in 1946 when Olivia won an Oscar. Joan was asked to present the award but Olivia refused to even shake her hand. “They just don’t have much in common,”, commented on person at the time.

But it’s not just in _________business where siblings fall out. Entrepreneurs Rudolf and Adolf Dassler started making sports shoes in the small German town of Herzogenaurach in the 1920s. Their factory south of the river became very successful but they were always very _________. Adolf, or Adi, was a quiet craftsman while Rudolf was “a loud-mouthed salesman”. _______in 1948, the brothers fell out permanently. Rudolf moved across the river and set up a rival sports-shoe company, which he called Puma. _________, Adi used the first letters of his name and surname to create his brand—Adidas.

The brothers never spoke to each other again and their rivalry _______the town. The residents wore either Adidas or Puma and would sometimes refuse to __________each other. It became a place where you always looked at the ____________someone was wearing before starting a conversation. The brothers died in the 1970s and were buried in the same cemetery—at opposite ends.

But not all successful siblings ________each other. Top tennis players Serena and Venus Williams have played each other in over 20 major tennis tournament finals, but have always remained the best friends. They played doubles together, lived together, and even had breakfast before these big matches.’ We leave everything on the ________.’ Serena once said. ‘We’re sisters the moment we shake hands at the net.’

So, now that we are adults, have my sister and i learnt to be more like the William sisters and less like the Gallaghers? Well, I’d love to say “Yes” but the __________answer is “not always”. I still hate seeing photos of us together because I still feel inferior to her. But our rivalry is not as bad as it used to be, and if I feel really jealous, I remind myself: __________fades but a sister is for life!
