二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in the UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates(激活) a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.

The system can’t tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna(天线),the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset , and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration(持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands- free devices which, when picked up,will prevent the activation.

While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice- and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a“future development”.

Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement(执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.

【1】What is the function of the roadside system according to Paragraph 1?

A.To collect information for future use.

B.To send out cellphone signals to drivers.

C.To detect passengers' wrong use of phones.

D.To warn people against using pones while driving.

【2】How does the detector of the roadside system work?

A.It measures the length of the phone.

B.It warns drivers with a phone in hand.

C.It picks up radio waves from handsets.

D.It activates the vehicle's Bluetooth system.

【3】What does the text suggest drivers do with the road warning sign?

    A.Swift to Bluetooth while driving.

B.Have a close watch of road signs.

C.Avoid being picked up by detectors.

D.Stop using a hands- free mobile phone.

【4】What will the county council probably do in the future?

A.Share the devices with the police.

    B.Make the system more advanced.

C.Replace the police with the new system.

D.Take steps to settle road safety problems.

  • 27、The term “crop circle” or “circles” was created by a researcher, Colin Andrews, to describe the strange circles and complex geometries(复杂的几何图形). He has researched what has shown up in fields of wheat, barley, rye, corn, soy beans and other crops for years.

There are numerous theories(理论)that have been given to explain crop circles of unknown origin(起源). It is notable for most people that when crop circles have been made by human hands, the plants themselves are damaged. But the plants in the stricken area continue to grow and ripen, and none of the stalks are broken nor the seed heads crushed.

Another strange thing about these particular types of crop circles is that the genetic(基因的)structure of the plants themselves has been changed. This does not happen to the crop circles that have proven to be the work of pranksters (玩恶作剧的人).

In 1966, in the small town of Tully Queensland, Australia, one of the most famous accounts of a UFO, as well as the possible link to crop circles, was given. A farmer was working on his farm and said that he saw a saucer-shaped craft (飞行器)fly 30 or 40 feet above a swamp (沼泽地)and then fly away at extremely high speed. The farmer decided to look into the area where he thought the craft had been hovering (盘旋)and he found the plants there intricately woven (杂乱地编织) in a clockwise pattern.

The crop circle phenomenon (现象)became a very hot topic during the late 1980s. No less than 12,000 genuine crop circles have been discovered all cross the world. In countries like the former Soviet Union, the UK, Japan, the U. S. and Canada, this strange phenomenon continues to appear and baffle anyone who observes it because no rational explanation exists. In a wheat field in Monroe County, Tennessee, a pattern ranging about 150 feet in diameter(直径)was discovered on May14, 2007. Captain Bryan Graves of the local sheriff’s department discovered it while flying.

The crop circle phenomenon has never stopped appearing across the world since it was discovered. Could it be that extraterrestrial (来自天外的)beings are trying to communicate with humans? If so, what is the message they are trying to send? The mystery continues.

【1】When it comes to crop circles, most people think ________.

A.Colin Andrews’ study deserves to be believed

B.its appearance has no relationship to humans

C.plants in the crop circle are easily damaged

D.the phenomenon has only appeared in wheat field

【2】What did the farmer mentioned in Paragraph 4 think of the crop circle?

A.He thought it must be the work of pranksters.

B.The crop circle could change plants genes.

C.He believed the crop circle was made by a UFO.

D.Crop circles would be popular among Australians.

【3】The underlined world “baffle” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “________”.

    A.confuse

    B.excite

    C.upset

    D.satisfy

【4】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.Bryan Graves plans to study extraterrestrial beings.

B.Crop circles have continued to appear in the world.

C.Crop circles are unlikely to be created by extraterrestrial beings.

D.Humans can’t translate what extraterrestrial beings express.

  • 28、They were a happy family:four daughters were all in the same school in different grades. The youngest, Janice, who was in my class, seemed to be glued(粘) to her mother’s skirts. The three older girls took the bus to school every morning, but Janice was always driven to school by her mother.

One Friday, Janice’s mother asked for a talk with me. She said in a soft voice, “My husband is going to Europe on business for two weeks, and he insists that I go with him. I have tried to explain over and over that Janice needs me here. But he thinks that she will be fine without me so I have no choice; I have to go. I have told the babysitter to drive her every morning. Will you please give Janice special attention and help her? I want to be sure everything goes well for her.”

I told her that we would make every effort to support Janice. I even volunteered to meet Janice at her car so she would see a familiar face. As a mother myself, I’d like to help. Janice’s mother thanked me for my understanding.

On Monday morning, expecting a tearful, anxious child, I planned a special program of fun and games. I waited outside to greet Janice, but just then the bus arrived and not three, but four girls got off. Janice skipped along joyfully, saying “goodbye” to her sisters as she ran with two friends into the classroom. I walked slowly into the classroom and called Janice over to ask how the bus ride went. Impatiently she said, “Oh, I always want to take the bus with the other kids, but Mother needs to be with me. You see there won’t be any more babies, so I have to be a baby a little longer. While she is away, I’ll just ride the bus every day. I am five, you know.”

【1】Why did Janice’s mother want to have a talk with the author?

A.To ask her to help Janice with her homework.

B.To ask her to pick up Janice every day.

C.To ask her to meet Janice at her car.

D.To ask her to give Janice more attention.

【2】What did the author not do for Janice?

A.Plan a special program of fun and games.

B.Wait for her outside the school.

C.Greet her when she got off the car.

    D.Ask about her bus ride.

【3】What do we know from the passage?

A.Janice is too young to go to school by bus.

B.Janice likes taking a bus to school.

    C.Janice doesn’t like her babysitter.

D.Janice is no longer a child.

  • 29、We recognize our friends’ faces. And we’re not alone. Many social animals can identify individuals of their own species by features of their faces. That's important, because they need to be able to change their behavior depending on who they meet. And a recent research has shown that some species of monkeys, birds, and domesticated (家养的) animals can even tell different faces apart by looking at photographs alone.

Ethologist Léa Lansade of the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment did an experiment to find out how well horses can recognize individual people in photographs.

She and her team first taught the horses how to “choose” between two side-by-side pictures by touching their noses to a computer screen. The horses were then shown photos of their present keeper alongside faces of unfamiliar humans. They had never seen photos of any of the people before. The horses correctly identified their current keeper and ignored (忽视) the stranger’s face about 75%of the time. In fact, even though the horses didn't get it right every single time, they were at least as correct in picking out their earlier keeper as they were at identifying their present one.

The results suggest that not only can horses differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar human faces, they also naturally understand that photographs are two dimensional representations (二维呈现) of real life, without any other intimations such as smell or sound. And they’re even better at this than our oldest animal parter, the domestic dog.

In addition, horses seem to have a strong long-term memory for human faces, like their long lifespan and history of domestication. In future experiments, the researchers would like to test whether looking at photos of people that they have had bad experiences with in the past might cause horses to act anxious or even avoidance. So maybe think twice before doing anything that might give a horse a long face.

【1】Why did researchers show the horses both the keeper’s photos and the strangers’?

A.To find out what horses would do in the experiment.

B.To see why horses could recognize the keeper in the pictures.

C.To test whether horses could recognize the strangers in pictures.

D.To study to what degree horses can make out different people in pictures.

【2】What does the underlined word “intimations” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Clues.

    B.Differences.

    C.Photographs.

    D.Senses.

【3】What are researchers still uncertain about?

A.Whether horses can live longer than other animals.

B.Whether horses can remember human's faces for a long time.

C.Whether horses can show their emotions at the sight of photos.

D.Whether horses are better at recognizing photos than other animals.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

    A.To talk about animals’ species.

    B.To explain animals’ facial features.

C.To show animals’ behaviour for adaptation.

D.To introduce animals’ ability to identifying faces.
