二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Even worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic (学术的) growth and spiritual health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.

Recent studies Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in math and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students’ academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education..

Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relations hip troubles, and choices about smoke and alcohol (酒精). All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school music programs were less likely to turn to smoke. Music programs encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.

Music crosses language, class and culture. Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.

The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.

1The two studies seem to show that ________.

A.students with great success attend music lessons

B.music classes play an important role in students’ growth

C.not all students could have music classes at school

D.students who have music classes do better in all subjects

2The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that ________.

    A.music makes cross-cultural communication possible

B.different cultures have different styles of music

C.Japan has a good relationship with America

D.Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano

3What can we learn about education with music classes?

A.It allows schools to make more money.

B.It can cause a lot of academic problems.

C.It will affect the world cultural communication greatly.

D.It does good to students’ academic success and spiritual health.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.The Importance of Music Classes in School

    B.Music—A Bridge to Understanding

    C.Studies on Music Education

    D.How to Get Music Back

  • 27、There are so many benefits of volunteering. Animal lovers

    Caretakers

Many teens are quite gifted in working with young children. 【3】 They can volunteer as a mother’s helper for another homeschool mom or read to children at local schools or day cares.

    Artists

Depending on teens’ skill level, perhaps your teen artist could volunteer to teach classes at a local community center. Check with local recreation or child care centers to see if they need volunteers to lead some art lessons or simply create with children.

    Bakers

Is your kid a chef or baker? Prepare a meal or bake a treat for your local police officers, fire fighters. You might also consider taking a meal to your local hospital. 【4】

  • 28、The idiom “a big fish in a small pond” describes a person who is very well known or important in a small group but is not known or important outside that small group. For example,a high-performing high school student in a small town could be a big fish in a small pond. 【1】And he may simply not know how small his “pond” is-until he moves on to a big university. He must compete with hundreds of students who were also the best at their high schools.【2】

Here is another example. A young singer was famous in his small town. He wanted to move to a big city to grow his singing career. 【3】 “Here in our small town,”they said, “you are a big fish in a small pond. Once you move to New York City, that is going to change. Best be ready!”For some people, this can be a painful realization-sometimes called a wake-up call.

【4】 They never grow their circle of friends or work environment.Sometimes they do not take opportunities that increase their environment, or pond. By staying in a small pond,it is safer. There are fewer dangers and also fewer competitors.

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary explains another way to use the idiom. It can also describe a situation where one person has more power, influence, knowledge,or experience than others within a small group. So sometimes we use this expression to describe people who want to stay in a small pond just to feel more important.【5】

A.His family supported him but also warned him.

    B.He may feel overly-confidentor overly-important.

C.Now, some people like being a big fishin a small pond.

D.People have been using this expression since the early 1800s.

E.Their position is not questioned by the other fish in the pond.

F.A pond is a small body of water, which is usually smaller than a lake.

G.His pond just got much larger and is now filled with many more fish.

Ask any British person and they’re sure to have happy memories of being in their school’s Christmas play, whether they played the role of Mary or Joseph or perhaps even a sheep or a donkey.

Another Christmas theatre tradition is the pantomime(舞剧). Pantomimes are a type of musical comedy for families .the audience is encouraged to participate in the performance-singing along with the music and shouting to the actors. Pantomimes are really fun to watch, especially for children.

The house next door had been empty for more than a year. Then one day, workmen arrived and started to clean and paint the place. My siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I were curious about who would be moving in. We did not have long to wait. A week after the house was prepared, a truck arrived. We watched with interest as the movers carried the furniture into the house. The furniture looked expensive. Our new neighbors must be wealthy people.

However, it never occurred to us four children that rich people may not be interested in befriending us. Our house badly needed a new coat of paint. We were clean and tidy most of the time, but our clothes were clearly old and worn. Father drove an old car that we could hear coming down the road long before it was in sight. We were simple, ordinary people.

When the new occupants arrived in a big and shiny car, we pushed one another to get a good look at them from our bedroom window. Mother had forbidden us from hanging around our gate. She said our new neighbors needed privacy, whatever that was. A beautifully dressed lady got out of the car. To our joy, we saw a boy and a girl about our age following her into the house. They did not look excited to move into their new home though. That did not stop us from wanting to get to know them.

The next evening, we were playing hide-and-seek in the garden when we spotted the boy and the girl watching us. My siblings and I went to the fence that separated our gardens. My eldest brother Kian called to the pair. They looked at us unsmilingly. Their mother appeared next, took one look at us and brought the two into the house. We were disappointed to have such snooty (傲慢的) neighbors. We decided to leave them alone after that.
