One night in March 1999, a man was driving from California to Oregon, US, to visit some friends. He had stopped his car to have some food when he started to hear strange noises. Turning on the headlights, he saw an 8-foot-tall creature covered in thick, dark hair. The creature stared at him for a minute, turned in the road and walked off slowly into the woods.
In the past 50 years alone, there have been thousands of reported sightings of similar creatures in the US, Canada, the Himalayas(喜马拉雅山地区)and even Hubei Province in China. The creature is known as bigfoot.
Bigfoot is said to be a very tall(between 2 and 4. 5 metres), ape-like(类人猿似的)creature that is covered in hair and walks upright on two legs. It is very wary(警惕的)of human beings.

The footprints are easy to make and they say: all you need to do is to make two large feet out of plaster(石膏), attach them to the bottom of your shoes and walk with big steps. As for the photos and films, they are just people dressed in ape suits.
They also say the sightings are not real, just people making mistakes. For example, bigfoot could be a bear living in the wild that sometimes stands up on its back legs.

27、Avoid Misunderstanding Idioms (习语)
An idiom is a phrase or expression whose meaning is not always straightforward or easy to understand. 【1】 The meaning is that you don’t know who someone is, or what something is by their appearance. It is impossible to be familiar with all idiomatic expressions. You will come across some newer ones that you haven’t heard before. When this happens, here are some ways for you to get an idea about what is being said.

You have to consider what the general context is in the conversation, and from there you will be able to make a guess of how the idiomatic expression connects to the conversation. Of course, this requires that you listen actively to the conversation and that your mind is not somewhere else.
Check your understanding. If you want to make sure your understanding is correct, you may want to change the sentence into simple language and ask the person you are talking to if the meaning is correct. It never hurts to try to make something that you have heard in a conversation clearer. 【3】
Consider the body language of the speaker. 【4】 If you see that someone has expressive facial expression and gestures, and that he may be joking, consider this when trying to understand an idiomatic expression. Some of these expressions may not have a good and pleasant meaning if the words are taken literally (字面地). However, if you connect together all other information you are given in the conversation, you will realise that it has a totally different meaning.
【5】 There’s no better way to become more familiar with idiomatic expressions than to read all different types of resources. For example, you will find a lot of idiomatic expressions in novels. What’s also good about this is that since you are reading it and going at your own pace, you actually have the opportunity to check the meaning by yourself. After that, if you see the same expression in another sentence, you’ll better understand its true meaning.
