二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Have you ever wondered what the food you eat every day can tell you about where you come from? Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world eat different types of food? Do you ever ask yourself why certain foods or culinary (烹饪的) traditions are so important to your culture? There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.

On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us is. Many of us associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us.

On a larger scale, food is an important part of culture. Traditional cuisine is passed down from one generation to the next. It also operates as an expression of cultural identity. Immigrants bring the food of their countries with them wherever they go and cooking traditional food is a way of preserving their culture when they move to new places.

In China, harmony is a vital quality in almost every aspect of life. This is reflected in Chinese cuisine, where almost every flavor is used in a balanced way creating delicious dishes with flavors that go well together. The cuisine of the United States also reflects its history. The European colonization of the Americas brought European ingredients and cooking styles to the U.S.

As the world becomes more globalized, it is easier to access cuisines from different cultures. We should embrace our heritage(传统)through our culture's food but we should also become more informed about other cultures by trying their foods. It's important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it.

【1】What does the author want to express in Paragraph 1?

A.A link between food and culture.

B.Connections between food and the growth of people.

    C.Different types of food.

    D.Concerns about food and culture.

【2】What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Traditional food.

    B.Traditional culture.

    C.One generation.

    D.Childhood.

【3】How do people feel about Chinese food?

A.It is rich in all kinds of vitamins.

B.It balances the dishes of different countries.

C.It is extremely crucial to balance people's daily life.

D.It contains abundant dishes with various flavors.

【4】What can we learn about food from this passage?

A.It binds us to the society, holding a special and personal value for us.

B.The European colonist in Americas brought the ingredients and cooking styles from their hometown to the USA.

C.In Chinese culture, harmony in cuisine is of little significance.

D.We should refuse the cuisines in other cultures.

  • 22、

Worried about the loss of rainforests and the ozone layer? Well, neither of those is doing any worse than a large majority of the 6,000 to 7,000 languages that remain in use on Earth. One half of the survivors will almost certainly be gone by 2050, while 40% more will probably be well on their way out. In their place, almost all humans will speak a small number of languages——Mandarin, English, Spanish.

Linguists(语言学家)know what causes languages to disappear, but what's less often remarked is what happens on the way to disappearance: languages' vocabularies, grammars and expressive potential all disappear. "Say a community goes over from speaking a traditional Aboriginal(土著的)language to speaking a Creole," says Australian Nick Evans, a language experts, "you leave behind a language where there's very fine vocabulary for the landscape. All of that is gone in a Creole. As speakers become less able to express the wealth of knowledge that has filled ancestors' lives with meaning over thousands of years, it's no wonder that communities tend to become weakened."

Due to the huge losses, some linguists struggle against the situation, for example, training many documentary linguists in language-loss hotspots such as West Africa and South America.

However, not all approaches to the preservation of languages will be particularly helpful. Some linguists are boasting(自夸)of more and more complicated means of recording languages: digital recording and storage, the Internet and mobile phone technologies. But these are encouraging the quick style of recording trip: fly in, switch on digital recorder, fly home, download to hard drive, and store gathered material for future research. That's not quite what some endangered-language experts have been seeking. Michael Krauss from the University of Alaska complained openly that linguists are playing with technology research while most of their raw data is disappearing.

Who is to blame? Linguists who go out into communities to study, document and describe languages, argue that theoretical linguists, like Noam Chomsky, who draw conclusions about how languages work, have had so much influence that linguistics has largely ignored the continuing disappearance of languages.

1Why does the author mention rainforests and the ozone layer in Paragraph 1?

A.To highlight they are of great importance.

B.To show their connection with language loss

C.To indicate anxiety about environmental issues.

D.To introduce the topic concerning language loss.

2What does Nick Evans say about the effects of language disappearance?

A.People find it hard to describe their culture.

    B.Vocabularies have to be changed.

C.People tend to turn to ancestors more

D.Focus is switched on new grammars.

3What has Michael Krauss pointed out?

A.Digital age further promotes some endangered languages.

B.An instant approach to language recording may not work.

C.Linguists have made poor use of improvement in technology.

D.Linguists' quick style of recording trip should be encouraged.

4What can be concluded from the text?

    A.By 2050 only 600 to 700 languages will remain.

B.Local languages are preserved perfectly in West Africa.

C.Theoretical linguists may be responsible for the loss of languages.

D.Linguists have come a long way to save endangered languages.

  • 23、A new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, reveals that non-human animals' tears are not so different from our own. The chemical similarities are so great, in fact, that the composition of other species' tears—and how they're adapted to their environments-may provide insights into better treatments for human eye disease.

Previously, scientists had studied closely only the tears of a handful of mammals, including humans, dogs, horses, camels, and monkeys. In the new study, Brazilian veterinarians analyzed the tears of reptiles and birds for the first time , focusing on seven species.

Tears, which are released from tear tubes, form a film over the eye that's composed of three ingredients: mucus, waler, and oil. The mucus coats the eyes surface and helps to attach the film to the eye, the water is a natural salty solution containing crucial proteins and minerals, and the oil prevents the eye from drying out.

Humans are the only known species to produce emotional tears; the expression "crocodile tears," which refers to a person's phony display of emotion, comes from the mysterious tendency of crocodiles to release tears as they eat.

But tears play key roles beyond weeping, notes Lionel Sebbag at Iowa State University, who was not involved in the new research. They help with vision by lubricating and clearing the eye. They also protect the eye against infection and provide nutrition to the cornea, the eye's clear outer layer, which lacks blood tubes, he says.

Learning how reptiles and birds' use tears may also inspire new medications for conditions such as dry eye, which occurs when tear tubes don't produce enough oil. The disease, common in cats, dogs, and people, can sometimes lead to blindness.

【1】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The source of tears.

    B.The composition of tears.

    C.The classification of tears,

    D.The definition of tears.

【2】What does the underlined word "phony” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Tricky.

    B.Regretful.

    C.Cold.

    D.False.

【3】Which statement does Lionel Sebbag agree with?

    A.Weeping contributes to eye disease.

B.The cornea has rich blood tubes.

C.Tears oil and clear the eyes.

    D.More tears mean better vision.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

    A.Tears, a barrier to eyes

B.A better treatment for eye disease

    C.Non-human tears promise new cures

D.Other species’ tears are similar to humans'

  • 24、   On my fourth day in a self-driving car, I finally felt comfortable enough to let it stop itself. Before then, Id allowed the car- a Volvo S90 sedan to control the direction, with my hands still on the wheel, and to adjust speed in traffic. By Day 4, I was ready to make a jump into the future.

With the car traveling on a busy road, I activated the driverless mode. Soon, a traffic light turned red. For a split second, I prepared to get on the brakes. There was no need. The cameras and computers in the Volvo recognized the traffic conditions and smoothly began applying the brake.

If you're anything like most people, you're familiar with this anxiety. Almost 80 percent of Americans fear traveling in a self-driving car, a recent survey found.

Researchers at the University of Chicago have conducted some clever experiments studying the phenomenon. They asked participants to complete tasks and compared their performance with a computer system's. After the computer made a mistake, people were unwilling to use it again. After the people made mistakes, their self-confidence wouldn't change. It didn't matter that the human beings made more mistakes than the computer. So it is with driving. More than 37,000 Americans died in crashes last year, most from human error. The death count from cars goes beyond that from guns. So if you are shocked and angry by guns and want things to change, you should feel the same about car crashes.

Technology creates an opportunity to save lives. Computers don't get drunk or distracted by text messages, and they don't have blind spots. Just look at commercial airlines: Automation has helped all but get rid of deadly crashes among American air carriers. The last one happened in 2009.

The technology for self-driving cars still isn't good enough. But it is improving rapidly. Within a few years, many cars will have advanced crash-avoidance systems and driving will be revolutionized sooner than many people now understand.

1How does the author introduce the topic?

A.By offering a piece of news. B.By describing an experience.

C.By giving background information. D.By introducing a latest car.

2What can we know from the fourth paragraph?

A.The participants lost self-confidence after making mistakes.

B.The participants would ignore the mistakes made by the computer.

C.Car crashes is no less shocking than gun incidents.

D.The death count from cars is the same as that from guns.

    3The author mentioned commercial airlines___________.

A.to advertise for the commercial airlines. B.to assess the security of driverless cars.

C.to find fault with computers. D.to prove the advantage of technology.

    4What's the author's attitude towards self-driving cars?

    A.Favorable. B.Indifferent.

    C.Skeptical. D.Concerned.
