26、 Working on a farm and taking care of crops can be hot, time-consuming and difficult. Engineers have long wanted to build robots to lighten the load. But it has proved a difficult task. Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step on the easily damaged plants heavily. And they have to stop working when rain turns fields muddy. “Tarzan”, however, could deal with some of those challenges.
Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When it comes to a farm environment, he realized robots would face many problems. “Many robots tend to get twisted(弯曲的) together or get stuck,”he says. What's more, he notes, "It's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human helping them.”
What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers says, “The sloths(树懒)move from tree branch to tree branch to avoid having to walk around the forest floor. "Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand to hand along wires hung above the field. He named their invention Tarzan after the jungle-swinging character in a movie.
Tarzan is not the first swinging robot. Mark Spong, a robotics researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas notes that some teams have built robots that do gymnastics or copy mammals. But he says he admires Tarzan for its using swinging movement to save energy and the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.
Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors (传感器) and cameras. But he also said future robots might take water to a particularly thirsty plant or fertilize one that needs nutritional support. And adding a third “hand”could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Finally the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.
【1】What worried the engineers when they built the farm robots?
A.They took up too much space.
B.They made the farming process slow.

A.It could be found everywhere.
B.It could be put into more practical uses.
C.It could be used to do all the farm work.
D.It could be popular with working people in cities.
27、 Getting stuck in a traffic jam is one of the most boring problems for people living in big cities. The fact that you’re moving so slowly leads to stress, anger and the wish that your car could just fly over the traffic like an airplane.
Soon, however, that wish could come true. On May 8, US car-renting company Uber showed off what it described as “the transportation mode of the future: on-demand air transport,” reported ABC News.
According to Nikhill Goel, head of products for Uber Air, the company’s air taxi service may start test flights in the US cities of Dallas and Los Angeles, as well as Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, as early as 2020. If everything goes according to plan, passengers will be able to fly to work by 2023.
When the Olympics comes to Los Angeles in 2028, Uber “expects to have hundreds, if not thousands, of its airplanes in the skies.” Goel told Newsweek.
So what would Uber’s flying vehicles be like?
They are small, electric airplanes that take off and land up and down, they give off zero emissions (排放) and are quiet enough to operate in cities.
Just like an airplane, the vehicles will have fixed wings to help them glide. But while a helicopter has just one big fixed rotor (螺旋桨), Uber’s vehicles will have many rotors, which will help increase fuel efficiency (效率) while reducing emissions and noise.
Because of these fixed wings and many rotors, Uber’s flying taxis “should be quieter and safer than a helicopter.” reported ABC News .
However, the service still has a long way to go before it’s ready to accept passengers, for example, to avoid any possible accidents. Uber is working with NASA to study air traffic control problems connected with low-flying aircraft. But just as Dubai’s Mayor Betty Price said, “This program is revolutionary and future-oriented (面向未来的).”

C. Different opinions about Uber’s flying taxis.
D. The difficulties Uber is facing in testing flying vehicles.
28、About 1,833 lives were lost in 2005 in Hurricane Katrina, one of the most terrifying storms in U.S. history. The government’s shortage of preparation and good measures to Katrina met with widespread criticism (批评), and the need for a more complete system to react to natural disasters appearing as one of the key lessons from the 2005 storm. The effect of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico in 2017 shows that these lessons have not been learned: The storm, which hit the island last September, made tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans homeless, left over a million people without electricity for several weeks, and caused about $90 billion in damages.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) on May 29 says that the Puerto Rico deaths related to Hurricane Maria are at least 4,654, over 70 times the previous official number of 64. The death rate after the storm was 14.3 per 1,000 persons, a 62% increase from the official rate for the same period in 2016, researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found. “The shortage of medical care was the main cause of high death rates in the months after the hurricane,” the researchers wrote.
There are three explanations for why so many people died after Hurricane Maria: the inactive action of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the poor health of Puerto Ricans before the storm, and the weak facilities and shortage of money for the health system before Maria’s striking the island. It is especially important to note that because modern medicine can treat people with chronic illnesses , the failure of a local health care system may be particularly threatening (威胁) to the post-disaster health of the affected population.
Hurricane Maria and other recent disasters have shown the need for health systems becomes more and more important. Our government should take action!
【1】What could we learn about Hurricane Katrina and Maria in Paragraph 1?

A.People were short of medical care.
B.People failed to run away quickly.
C.The government had wrong figures.
D.The Hurricane hit the island heavily.
【3】What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The reasons for people’s death after Hurricane Maria.
B.The effect of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico.
C.The weak facility and financial problems in Puerto Rico.
D.The failure of a local health care system.
【4】What is the author’s attitude toward the government?
A.Admiring.

29、 I was taking in the breathtaking view from the top of Sydney Harbor Bridge when I sensed I was about to witness something even more dramatic right in front of me. Although we were all tied to lines running along the steel girders, a fellow climber called Mike had somehow managed to drop onto bended knee and turn to face his girlfriend, Wendy. I knew what was coming. “Wendy, will you marry me?” he asked. There was a quick smile and an attempted kiss and then a big beam. Mike had the answer he hoped for and all of us burst into a round of applause.
Apparently more than 2,000 couples have become engaged ( 订 婚 ) at the summit since 1998, when it became possible to climb it in organized tour groups. The bridge, perhaps the most recognized symbol of this beautiful city, opened in 1932. It's still the world's largest steel-arch bridge.
We returned to the fantastic view: the famous Sydney Opera House, ferries and sailboats making their way through the harbor, the city skyline — but I had to force myself to look down. We had climbed 1,423 steps to the top of the bridge and I didn't know whether to be delighted or scared.
Nicole Kidman has done it. So have Bruce Springsteen, Prince Harry and scores of other celebrities. But climbing to the top clearly isn't just for the rich and famous. On the contrary, Australian youngsters do it to celebrate their 12th birthdays. (You have to be at least 12 years old to do the climb.) A 100-year-old woman climbed it and told guides it was on her list of things to do before she died.
You can climb during the day, at twilight, or even after dark with headlamps. People climb in all weathers except when there's lightning in the area. In fact, over two million people have made the three-and-a-half-hour climb to the top of the famous bridge—an adventure that cannot be done anywhere else in the world on a bridge this big. That's probably why this climb has won a lot of tourism awards. Today, the climb is firmly on the "to-do" list for locals as well as tourists.
【1】What can we learn on the bridge is quite rare?
A.Getting engaged on the bridge is quite rare.
B.People climb the bridge on climbers’ age.
C.There are no limitations on climbers’ age.
D.Many famous people have done the climb.
【2】How did the author feel when he climbed to the top of the bridge?
A.Bored and tired B.Fearful and confused
C.Excited and nervous D.Relived and relaxed
【3】What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce the popularity of the bridge.
B.To emphasize the importance of the bridge
C.To explain the functions of the bridge.
D.To describe the fantastic view from the bridge.

31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.
For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 【1】 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 【2】 of Martian resources, including oxygen.
Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 【3】 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.
Earth Reliant explorations is 【4】 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.
Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 【5】 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 【6】 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.
Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 【7】 for Mars.
Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 【8】 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.
This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 【9】 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.
There are challenges to 【10】 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.
