二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Sign language, the primary form of communication of the deaf community, has been in use for hundreds of years. You're probably most familiar with American Sign Language, but sign language is used all over the world and has nearly 150 variations. Sign language interpreters can be seen everywhere from classrooms and graduation ceremonies to major sporting events.

When you think of sign language, you most likely imagine signers using their hands to form words and letters. However, hands are only one of the many different body language techniques that signers use to get their meaning across. In fact, much of the grammatical structure of sign language is not indicated by the signer's hands.

While the hands are responsible for forming the words themselves, markers called "non-manual elements" control much of the languages' grammatical structure. Non-manual elements (or markers) are body language techniques that don't use the hands. These include head movements, body positioning and facial expressions. Used together with the signs. these elements give sign language a subtle and extremely complicated grammatical structure. Linguist Andrea Lackner from Alpcn-Adria University in Austria did a study that shows just how important these non-manual elements are to sign language users.

The study assessed just how many different things non-manual elements can do. For this study, all participants were deaf users of Austrian Sign Language. They watched a video of someone using sign language, and they had to describe the purpose of each non-manual element. The results were very complicated. For instance, things as subtle as the direction of the signer's gaze can indicate whether or not a statement is hypothetical(假设的). A single head movement can indicate the emotion of a statement, a conditional or if situation, or a signer's feelings toward a hypothetical question. Body language is always important, but in sign language, it can change the entire meaning of a sentence!

【1】What do signers use their hands to do mostly?

A.To know people's words and letters.

    B.To understand people's meanings.

    C.To form the grammatical structure.

    D.To form words and letters.

    【2】What do non-manual elements include?

A.Words, sign language and body language.

B.Head movements, body language and signs.

C.Head movements, body positioning and facial expressions.

D.Body positioning, facial expressions and signs.

【3】What does the study show about sign language?

A.The main function of the non-manual elements.

B.The importance of the non-manual elements.

C.The influence of body language on sign language.

D.The influence of sign language on body language.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.Non-manual Elements Counts in Sign Language

    B.Ways to Avoid Being Misunderstood

    C.Grammatical Elements in Sign Language

    D.The Importance of Sign Language

  • 27、   Gertrude was just an average kid with an average life. She lived in an average sized house in an average neighborhood. At home, she helped out just enough to get by. At school, she did just enough homework to stay out of trouble. She had straight Cs in all of her classes.

One day Gertrude’s teacher, Mr. Mister, stopped her after class. “Gertrude” he said, “I know that you can do better. I’ve seen the work you do in class, and some of it is amazing…Way better than C work.” Gertrude knew that there were moments when she tried a little harder than what everyone expected. But she just didn't have confidence in herself. She didn’t really believe that she could change; in fact, she was scared by the thought of having the power to become whatever she wanted. She stopped listening to Mr. Mister about half way through his speech and just nodded her head until he stopped.

That night, Gertrude had a dream. It was ten years into the future and she was still living with her mom in her average neighborhood. A voice spoke in the dream: “The present is nothing more than the outcome of the choices made in the past. The future will be the results of the choices we make today.” Gertrude started crying average sized tears, because she knew that she helped shape the world in which she lived, and the choices she made produced the options she had. She woke up with her pillow wet.

Gertrude was relieved to be back in middle school. She took a little more care in getting herself ready that morning, and she felt better than normal. She tried harder in school, and she felt smarter than usual. She helped more around the house and it looked better. Sure, there were still lots of things that Gertrude struggled with, but just trying her best made her feel better when she didn’t succeed. Gertrude even became great at failing by learning from her mistakes.

1Which of the following words can best describe Gertrude in Paragraph 1?

    A.Popular. B.Optimistic. C.Common. D.Aggressive.

2Where did Gertrude’s problem actually lie?

A.In herself. B.In her family. C.In her teacher. D.In her studies.

3What did Gertrude learn from her dream?

A.It is shameful to be an average kid with an average life.

B.The choices she makes at present will shape her future.

C.The present is not the result of the choices made in the past.

D.She could hardly do anything for the world in which she lived.

4What can we say for sure about Gertrude from the last paragraph?

A.She suffered more. B.She failed in her attempts.

C.She changed her attitude. D.She was glad about failures.

  • 28、   The United States space agency will send a spacecraft to explore the sun more closely than ever before on Saturday. NASA'S Parker Solar Probe(探测器)will fly through the hot solar atmosphere and come within just 6 million kilometers of the sun's surface.

The Parker Probe will get almost seven times closer to the sun than earlier spacecraft. To do this, it will fly past Venus(金星)seven times over seven years. Each pass will change the probe's orbit by providing a gravity push. It will move ever closer to the sun and straight into the corona(日冕), the sun's outermost atmosphere.

By exploring the sun's corona, scientists hope to learn why it is hundreds of times hotter than the sun's surface. They will also study what drives the solar wind.

The project was proposed in 1958, the same year NASA was established. Now, "it's becoming a reality," said project manager Andy Driesman.

The Parker spacecraft has a 2.4 meter heat shield(护罩)that is 11 centimeters thick. It is made of two carbon sheets. The front has a white coating to reflect sunlight. It is expected to shine red when it experiences the extreme solar heat. Almost everything on the spacecraft will be behind this shield to keep its scientific instruments relatively cool.

Besides, the spacecraft will also be traveling at a high speed. The probe will reach 690,000 kilometers per hour in the corona. The spacecraft will make its first flight past Venus in early October. Its first pass by the sun is expected in November.

The Parker Solar Probe is the first NASA spacecraft to be named after someone who is still alive. Eugene Parker is a 91-year-old professor at the University of Chicago. He predicted the existence of solar wind 60 years ago. He plans to be at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the southern state of Florida to see the launch.

1What's the advantage of the Parker Probe compared to the earlier ones?

A.It can change the orbit by flying past the sun.

B.It can get closer to the sun and into the corona.

C.It can study the effect of solar wind.

D.It can fly through the hot solar atmosphere without protection.

2What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Human had little achievements in exploring the sun.

B.Eugene Parker is the first one to study the sun.

C.The Parker Probe has to get close to the sun with the help of Venus.

D.Human can get close to the sun's surface within 6 million kilometers today.

3What can we learn about Eugene Parker?

    A.He started NASA.

B.He foresaw the solar wind when he was 31.

    C.He designed the Parker spacecraft.

D.He will study the sun using the Parker spacecraft.

4Judging from the content, the passage most probably belongs to   .

    A.a story book B.an advertisement

C.a science fiction D.a news report

  • 29、   One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.

Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.

As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring coordinated action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates (命运) are not ours alone to control .

In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as the years have passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road , what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat , but a shared moment of trust.

1The author considers ________ very important.

A.driving alone on a dark road B.shared trust and cooperation

C.cooperation to identify SARS virus D.independence of people

2The author said that they depended on each other in the same way because ________.

A.the approaching car was very dangerous

B.they both drove their car at a terrific speed

C.it was dark and the road was not wide enough

D.he might be killed out of the other’s careless driving

3From the second paragraph, we know the author drew the important lesson from ________.

A.only one experience B.many friends and strangers

C.a driver on a dark road D.many similar experiences

4The need for cooperation increases because _________.

    A.terrorism can happen everywhere

    B.the SARS virus spread quickly

C.peoples’ fates can’t be controlled by themselves

    D.the world has become smaller

5We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has ________.

A.had a change on his viewpoint of life

B.counted upon himself alone in everything

C.had no trust in others’ good faith and judgment

D.believed in one’s own personal responsibility
