25、 Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu's imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life - wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit far away planets.
But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably didn't expect that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Never did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, and he would win the 20l8 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time that a Chinese writer has won the prize.
In his speech, Liu said that his imagination came from Arthur C. Clarke, a famous UK sci-fi writer. He said that reading Clarke’s classic novels had a great effect on him.
But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay grounded (理性的).
In The Three-Body Problem, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading the earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between people, rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live in. However, all his magination is based on reality. Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams.

26、 You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic(有诗意的) Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions(《红楼梦》 ), written by Cao Xueqin(_________)—1763 ).Now the book has been made into an English language opera. The opera was first performed last September in San Francisco, the US. This month it came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights( 剧作家 ).Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But the opera writer David Henry Hwang reduced the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbroken tragedy that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes(服装)and stage settings(布景).He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on the stage, there is usually water around her on the stage.
The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audience. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution to the land where my parents were born”.
