China Daily May16,2021 Hot News China’s Zhurong Rover Lands on Mars The Zhurong rover was transported on a long journey to Mars by the Tianwen-1 spacecraft which began orbiting the red planet in February. The rover touched down on the surface of the planet before midnight on May 15, 2021. It is an important event for China, as only the U. S. A. had ever managed to land something on our neighboring planet before Zhurong. Some other countries have also tried before, but their rovers have either crashed or lost contact. After landing, Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated the mission team on its “outstanding achievement.” Less than a week after its landing, Zhurong returned its first two pictures. One is a black-and-white photo taken through a fisheye lens showing a view of where it landed. The other is in color, showing view of the rovers’ solar panels (太阳能电池板). If things go as planned, Zhurong will spend about three months studying the local environment around it and looking for signs of water ice on the Martian surface. |

25、Name: Stella by Starlight
Type: Historical novel
Number of pages: 352 pages
What’s the basic storyline?
Stella and her family were living peacefully in a small North Carolina town in 1932 until Stella and her brother saw, in the darkness of the night, a burning cross, the symbol of the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan is a secret organization in the United States. It is made up of white people who don’t like people of other races (种族) and do harm to them. Things really started to turn bad when a neighbor’s house was burned down. In her small town, Stella didn’t know whom to trust. Could Stella find the courage to stand up for what’s right?
Are the characters believable?
Some parts of the characters are not believable. The characters, for example, are either all good or all bad. I prefer characters that are more different and conflicted (矛盾的). The plot, however, is so attractive that I don’t mind. And I always read it for a long time without having a rest. Overall, the writer wisely tells the story through the characters’ points of view.
▲
I think people who enjoy reading historical novels and adventure stories will really like Stella by Starlight. People who are interested in learning the history of black and white people in America will especially enjoy this book.
From 1 to 10, which score will you give this book?
I will give Stella by Starlight 9 because of its amazing plot and good descriptions. 【4】What can be put in ▲ ?
A.Who will enjoy reading this book?
B.Do you enjoy reading the book?
C.Is the book worth reading?
D.Will people enjoy reading the book?
【5】Why does the writer leave a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter?
A.To make readers have a rest.
B.To attract readers to read on.
C.To tell us what to happen next.
D.To help us understand more.
26、 From deserts(沙漠)and beaches to playgrounds, we can find sand everywhere. But you might not know that sand is also useful.
"Sand is the second most-used things in the world after water," the BBC reported. However, the UN said we might be running out of it.
Sand is made up of very small pieces of rock , soil and minerals(矿物质). It can take tens of thousands of years to form(形成). But now we are using sand more quickly than it is being formed. According to the BBC, we use about 15 billion tons of sand every year to build houses, roads and other things. That 's enough to build a 20-meter-high and 20-meter-wide wall around the equator(赤道)every year.
People also put sand in the sea to make new islands. Singapore, for example, is now 20 percent bigger than it was in 1965. Palm islands are three large man-made islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. They took 94 million cubic meters of sand to build.
"If people keep using so much sand, it will run out in many places. For example , Vietnam may run out of construction(建造)sand by 2020", Live Science noted.
Since people need so much sand, they are trying to mine(开采)more of it. But this is bad for the environment. Mining sand may cause beaches to disappear and more floods to happen in places close to the sea. Also ,this may affect the habitats(栖息地)of many plants and animals.
【1】From the story , we know sand___.
A.can only be found on beaches B.is the most-used things in the world
C.can never be used up D.can be used to build houses
【2】How is Singapore becoming bigger?
A.People build more houses in Singapore.
B.People build more roads in Singapore.
C.People put sand in the sea to make new islands.
D.People try to mine more sand.
【3】How many tons of sand do we use every year?
A.About 9 ,400 ,000. B.About 2 ,000 ,000 ,000.
C.About 2 ,000 ,000. D.About 15 ,000 ,000 ,000.
【4】What is the reason more floods will happen in places close to the sea?
A.Over mining of sand. B.The weather there.
C..The increasing size of certain islands. D.The death of some plants.
【5】What does the writer want to tell us?
A.The UN said," Sand is the second most-used things in the world after water.
B.We shouldn't over mine sand.
C.People took 94 million cubic meters of sand to build Singapore.
D.Sand is not being formed so quickly as we are using it.
27、Bacteria Show New Ways to Recycle Plastic
Recently, researchers have reported on new ways to break down different kinds of plastic. The new development could lead to easier, high-quality recycling, and help deal with harmful plastic pollution.
The world is drowning (淹没) in plastic, but only about 9% of plastic products are ever recycled. Every year, over 7,720 billion kilograms of plastic finds its way into the world’s oceans. But bacteria may help recycle, even when humans don’t. Bacteria are tiny living things — so small that you need a microscope to see them. Bacteria feed themselves in many different ways. Some bacteria can “eat” other things by changing the chemicals in those things into something that will help the bacteria grow.
The secret to this is enzymes (酶). Bacteria use enzymes to cause chemical changes. Enzymes can work like a pair of scissors, breaking apart other materials.
Most people know about PET plastic. It’s used in water and soda bottles. About 63.5 billion kilograms are produced every year. Most PET is thrown away, but even when it’s recycled, it can’t be made into new bottles. Usually it’s turned into products like carpets.
In 2012, in some decaying (腐烂的) leaves, scientists discovered an enzyme called LCC that slowly breaks apart PET plastic. Years later, scientists working at the French company Carbios chose LCC from nearly 100,000 enzymes. It was the best at breaking down PET.
But the scientists wanted to improve LCC. They studied the enzyme and the way it attacked the PET. By testing thousands and thousands of small changes to the enzyme, they came up with a new kind of LCC. The new kind can eat through PET very quickly and it can even survive (存活) at higher temperatures.
The process turns the PET plastic back into the materials that it was made from. Those materials can then be used again to make new bottles or other products.
The researchers tested their new LCC against the original (原先的) enzyme, and were impressed with the results. When the conditions were just right, the new enzyme was able to break up 90% of the PET in just 10 hours. The original enzyme took about 20 hours and only broke up half of the PET.
【1】What can we learn about bacteria?
A.They can be seen without microscopes.
B.They can break apart other materials directly.
C.They use enzymes wo cause physical changes in things.
D.They are tiny creatures that feed on unusual forms of “food”.
【2】LCC to enzyme is like ________.
A.key to door
B.right to left
C.rose to flower
D.egg to chick
【3】What can LCC do to PET plastic?
A.It can make PET plastic much harder than before.
B.It can make PET plastic no longer a serious pollutant.
C.It can change PET plastic into tiny living things.
D.It can prevent PET plastic from breaking down.
【4】Thanks to LCC, PET plastic could be recycled by ________.
A.being turned back into the materials it was made from
B.being thrown away in some decaying lcaves
C.being remade into a new kind of soda
D.being put under high temperatures
【5】What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A.It’s very expensive to get LCC from the decaying leaves.
B.With LCC, PET plastic will be used more widely in making products.
C.More and more PET plastic find its way into the oceans because of LCC.
D.The original enzyme can break down the PET plastic more quickly than LCC.
