    A. But he doesn’t do that now.

    B. Father Christmas is very kind.

    C. But they still put their stockings at the end of their beds.

    D. He waits until the children are asleep.

On Christmas Eve—the night before Christmas Day—children all over Britain put a stocking at the end of their beds before they go to sleep. Their parents usually tell them that Father Christmas will come during the night.

【1】  He gets to the top of each house and climbs down the chimney into the fireplace. He fills each of the stockings with Christmas presents.

Of course, Father Christmas isn’t real. In Jim and Kate’s house, “Father Christmas” is really Mr. Green. Mr. Green doesn’t climb down the chimney.2  Then he quietly goes into their bedrooms and fills their stockings with small presents.

When they were very young, Mr. Green sometimes wore a red coat.3  The children are no longer young, and they know who “Father Christmas” really is.

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   American teenagers are driving less than ever before. Surveys of American teenagers show that American young people prefer chatting with their fiends online or playing games on the Internet to driving around in their cars.

For teenagers in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century, they had to have a car at an early age to show they were cool. Today, many teenagers have to choose between a car and the latest smart phones. With gas prices going up, car driving is becoming more expensive. For almost half of the people between 18 and 26, surfing the Internet is more important than owning a car. Young adults today meet their friends just through Facebook and chat, swap photos and play games together.

The golden age of the 50s and 60s of the 20th century when teenagers drove around just for fun is gone. In those days a shiny new car was something to boast about. It showed who you were. In 1978 about half of all 16-year-olds got their driver's licenses(驾驶执照)as soon as they had reached that age . In 2010 the figure dropped to only 30%.

Today driving is not as much fun as it was in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century. In the golden age car meant everything for young people. Another reason why teenagers drive less may be stricter driving tests and the fact that 16-year-olds must drive with experienced drivers over 21.

A study also shows that Americans of all ages have reduced car use , mostly because high gas prices.

1Why did teenagers in the 50s and 60s have to buy a car?

A.To go traveling with their families. B.To play games with their friend.

C.To have more talks with their friends D.To become cool and enjoy themselves.

2What make today’s American car sales fall down according to the last paragraph?

A.High gas prices B.Strict driving tests C.Heavy traffic D.Lack of fashion styles

3The text is organized by comparing the different needs between American teenagers in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century and ________.

    A.American teenagers in 1978 B.16-year-olds in Asia

C.today’s teenagers in America D.middle-aged Asian

  • 25、In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columbus’ fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.

At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as the months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus’ group was soon in serious trouble.

Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse (月食) on the evening of February 29, 1504 and how long it would last.

Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. At the moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the moon began disappearing.

The local leaders grew frightened and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus’ god had to return the moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the moon would stay completely hidden for about 48 minutes, Columbus returned just before the moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.

1At first, the local people helped Columbus and his men by__________.

    A. giving them food   B. building a house for them

    C. repairing their ship   D. providing them with a book

2The local people became angry because the Europeans__________.

    A. looked very different   B. had nothing to trade

    C. were cheats and thieves   D. wanted to take their land

3What did Columbus do after returning to his ship on the night of the meeting?

    A. He discussed the problem with his god.

    B. He waited for the eclipse to finish.

    C. He read about the stars and planets.

    D. He told his men what happened.

4What can we learn about the Europeans from the passage?

    A. They all believed in god.

    B. They never returned to Spain.

    C. They admired the local people.

    D. They caused their own problems.

  • 27、   LONDON—Manchester is Britain’s fattest city, a survey for “Men’s Health” has found, beating Glasgow for the first time since the magazine started examining the issue three years ago.

Editor Pete Muir said the survey had looked at a variety of factors from gym membership to heart disease rates to find the fattest city. “Manchester has more fast food restaurants than anywhere else in the UK,” he told Reuters. “People are taking the easy choice—eating and then just sitting in front of the TV.”

Manchester’s problem is part of a wider trend. On Thursday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) blamed a lack of exercise and poor diet for a fifth of adult Britons being obese (过度肥胖的). “Obesity is a major risky factor connected with heart disease, diabetes and premature death (糖尿病和早亡).” said an ONS survey. “None of the 108 young men in the survey reported eating five portions of fruit or vegetables on average each day.”

In Manchester, the head of the city’s public health programs said he did not believe that they were necessarily the fattest city, but that they did have problems and were aiming to address them. Social deprivation (贫困) was a major factor. “One of the myths is that the stressed-out rich businessman is the one who is overweight,” David Regan told Reuters. “In fact, it is the poor areas that have the most problems. We aim not to be the fattest but the fittest city but we have a long way to go.”

Second in the survey is Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Liverpool, Swansea and Lecicester. Glasgow is sixth.

1Manchester took the place of __________ and became Britain’s fattest city.

    A.Liverpool B.London C.Stoke-on-Trent D.Glasgow

2Obesity may lead to the following EXCEPT __________.

    A.Heart disease B.diabetes C.premature death D.a lack of exercise

3This article is most probably taken from __________.

    A.a newspaper B.a science book C.a novel D.a biography
