六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、You need some bread and milk. But half an hour later, you leave the supermarket with a trolley(手推车) full of food. What games do supermarkets play to make us spend so much money?

The tricks usually start before you walk in. Outside the supermarket entrance, anybody who walks past can smell warm, fresh bread. That makes us hungry and ready to buy lots of food, not just bread.

Now you’re inside and, of course, a small basket would be fine, but all they have are trolleys. And of course the problem with a trolley is that it looks sad and lonely with just one or two products inside. So we may fill it with something. In fact, supermarket trolleys are actually getting bigger so that we buy more.

Of course, many people shop in supermarkets because they think everything is cheaper than in other shops. So supermarkets offer very cheap prices on some things but then have higher prices for other products. One new trick is to put red stickers on products. Customers(顾客) usually connect red stickers with lower prices so the red stickers is easy to be noticed, even when there is no reduction! Interestingly, this trick appears to work more with men than with women.

There is a story behind the position of everything in the supermarket. For example, customers often go only to buy milk. So they put it right at the back, forcing you to go past hundreds of shelves full of other products. The position of products on each shelf is also important. The most expensive products are usually at eye-level so you see these at once. The exception is anything that children might like. These products are on lower shelves so that kids see and even reach them.

Except what you see and smell in a supermarket, what about what you listen to? In most supermarkets they have soft, slow music. It’s so relaxing that you slow down and spend more time(and money) in the store. You also move more slowly when the supermarket is busy. Experts suggest it’s better to shop when it is quieter on a Monday or a Tuesday for example. And be careful with queues at the checkouts. These are sometimes deliberate(故意), to make you buy something from the checkout shelves while you wait for your turn.

So, next time you go into your local supermarket, remember these tricks and see if you can come out with just the things you want.

【1】Many supermarkets put red stickers on products to ________.

    A.make them look more beautiful

B.make them different from cheaper ones

C.make people think the stickers are for men

D.make people think they could save money

【2】According to the passage, toys for children are usually placed ________.

    A.on the lower shelves

    B.on the back shelves

    C.on the front shelves

    D.on the higher shelves

【3】What is the passage mainly about?

A.several rules that every business should follow

B.several ways supermarkets use to sell more products

C.some advertisements that make customers buy more

D.some advice when people go shopping in supermarkets

【4】Perhaps the writer agrees that ________.

A.people like soft and slow music in supermarkets

B.things are cheaper in supermarkets than in other shops

C.people should just buy things they need in supermarkets

D.people should leave the supermarket with a trolley full of things

There is an unusual school called Notch Peak Elementary in a poor area in the USA. The school has just one student, Corinne Gaby and one teacher, Lisa Geary.

Corinne lives on a farm with her parents. The closest school is far away from her home and the road is not safe (安全的) enough to pass during the winter. So the education officials (官员) set up a school for her. It is not a normal school. In fact, it’s a classroom on the second floor of a horse barn (牲口棚) and a wooden stove that provides heat (木炉供热).

In such an environment, the first teacher only stayed there for a year. The next left after two years. Then came Lisa Geary. The first year was really hard for Lisa. She had to face the terrible weather. And it was difficult to teach Corinne at first. Luckily, things became better later. The relation between Corinne and Lisa became close. However, the situation will change when Corinne finishes the sixth grade. Because Lisa needs to take more training to get certifications. And she will leave the school soon.

1Why did the local education officials set up the school for Corinne?

A.Because she couldn’t get on well with others at school.

B.Because her family was too poor to pay for a school.

C.Because the road to other schools was long and unsafe for her.

    2How many teachers taught Corinne?

    A.One. B.Two. C.Three.

3What does the underlined word “certifications” mean in Chinese?

    A.口头承诺 B.资格证书 C.单位盖章

4All of the following statements are true EXCEPT (除了) _______.

A.Notch Peak Elementary is different from other schools

B.Lisa spent a hard time in the school at first

C.Corinne always had a good relation with her teacher

5What does the passage want to tell us?

A.It’s not easy for children to get a good education in poor areas.

B.People should raise more money for children in poor areas.

C.Teachers should be strict with their students at school.

  • 23、Would you like to have a brother or a sister? Years ago this might have sounded impossible to many. But since several years ago, with the end of China’s “one-child policy(政策)”, this could actually happen now. All Chinese couples are allowed to have two children. It means that many Chinese children may have siblings(兄弟姐妹) in the future.

What would it be like growing up with a brother or a sister? Having a sibling can stop children from bad feelings, according to Laura Padilla-Walker, a teacher from Brigham Young University, US. “Siblings give children something that parents can’t,” she said. You may not feel lonely at home any more because there is someone to play with you. You can also share secrets with him or her.

“But children with siblings also have to learn to control(控制) their feelings,” said Padilla-Walker. You need to share things with them, such as attention from parents, toys, the bathroom and the TV. There are also unpleasant situations such as competition, name-calling and even hair-pulling.

Even the birth order of siblings could matter too. US psychologist Kevin Leman said that birth order decides the way parents treat their children, thus causing different personalities between siblings.

Leman explained that parents are usually more strict with their first child. So firstborns may be perfect because parents set high goals(目标) for them. They usually act well and hope to succeed. When the couple has a second child, they have fewer rules. So late-born children are usually more creative. They also love attention. It is said that many of them also have a good sense of humor.

【1】The underlined word this in Paragraph 1 refers to(指) ______.

    A.one-child policy

    B.having a brother or a sister

    C.the end of “one-child policy”

D.being allowed to have two children

  • 25、Nook’s arrival, Good or Bad?

Booklovers, most of them, will tell you what a pleasure it is to lend a favorite read to a friend—the novel you stayed up all night to get to the end of; the travel book that made you feel as if you yourself were on a train ride through India. For a while it seemed that e-book users were to be denied this pleasure of lending to friends. You could b【1】 a book or magazine for your reading device, but you couldn’t lend it out.

But now, with the Nook, the US book chain Barnes and Noble’s response to Amazon’s Kindle, electronic readers will be able to have their l【2】 literary enthusiasm pressed on their friends, just like readers of physical books can. You simply email the book from your Nook and your friend can read it for two weeks, using any device with the Barnes and Noble e-book reader software. It’s a big i【3】 from previous e-book readers.

The Nook offers other features too. You read in black and white on the main screen, just like with Kindle. The difference is that on the lower part of the device there’s a c【4】   touch screen, which allows you to browse through a book or magazine, but goes black when you’re not using it so that you s【5】 power.

Another exciting thing about the Nook is that it offers Wi-Fi, arguably a big advance on previous e-book readers. Customers in the United States can use the Internet connection to read whole e-books at Barnes and Noble’s hundreds of bookstores for free. None of Barnes and Noble’s c【6】 can come close to this.

But the Nook, ironically, has t【7】 out to be a money-loser for Barnes and Noble, or at least a job-loser for Barnes and Noble’s employees. According to Marian Maneker at The Big Money Website, if the Nook is successful it might take sales from the company’s bookstores, eventually forcing their closure and the loss of thousands of jobs.
