二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Are you the type to linger over a meal, or to eat quickly without giving it much thought? New research confirms that you're better off going the slow route, because fast eaters are more vulnerable(易受伤害的)to gaining weight and becoming obese.

Speedy eating makes you tend to eat more because it takes a bit of time for your body to recognize that you're starting to feel full. Your body is programmed to sense, “I need to eat, I ate enough, stop eating." If you don't allow that to happen because you're eating too quickly, you tend to end up overeating.

Fast eaters may learn the habit when they were children. The findings did show children with siblings(兄弟姐妹)were more likely to have a faster eating rate. However, studies have also found that people without siblings seem more vulnerable to obesity than people with siblings. Perhaps the "sibling effect" doesn't directly result in bigger meals, just meals eaten more quickly.

To come to the findings, the researchers conducted two studies. The first study involved over 100 children between the ages of 5 and 11, and compared the children's eating rate (as reported by their parents) to their body mass index (BMI). The second study looked at over 800 adults and collected similar information, but the eating rate in this study was selfreported.

Interestingly, even adults who grew up with siblings seemed to continue the habit of fasteating into adulthood, suggesting that it is a behavior that lasts.

There's a lot of conversation that says society does this to adults—drive-through food, eating quickly at work because you've got to get back to your desk, all of these things. This study might make people reflect more on the 15-minute lunches that some kids get at school because it might be setting them up for a habit of eating quickly.

So at the table the key is to pay attention to the food you're eating. That will help you eat more slowly and therefore consume less.

【1】What's the second paragraph mainly about?

    A.The wonders of our body.

    B.The cause of eating more.

    C.The process of eating food.

    D.The benefit of speedy eating.

【2】What are children with siblings more likely to do according to the findings?

    A.Wolf down food.

    B.Have bigger meals.

    C.Chew food carefully.

    D.Take care of siblings.

【3】What leads to adults eating quickly?

    A.Taking care of kids.

    B.Drive-through food.

    C.Studying reports at desks.

    D.Fast-paced lifestyles.

【4】What does the author intend to tell us in the text?

A.Adults usually eat faster than children.

B.People are becoming fatter and fatter.

C.We should eat healthier food than before.

D.Speedy eaters may pack on more pounds.

  • 22、“To explore further and to learn about the solar system we live in, we need to take advantage of what’s on the Moon, so we don’t have to take everything with us,” said Jacob Bleacher, the Chief Exploration Scientist supporting NASA’s Artemis program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Scientists at the University of Florida have made a breakthrough discovery — decades in the making — that could both enable further space exploration and benefit humanity. “Here we are, 50 years later, completing experiments that were started back in the Apollo labs,” said Robert Ferl, a professor of this university.

Arabidopsis, native to Africa, is a relative of vegetables like broccoli (西兰花). Due to its small size and ease of growth, it is one of the most studied plants in the world. Space scientists are doing research on how it grows in space.

To grow the Arabidopsis, the scientific team used samples collected on the Apollo 11, 12, and 17 missions, with only a gram of regolith (表土) from the Moon given to each plant. The team added water and then seeds to the samples. They then put them into boxes in a clean room. A nutrient solution was added daily. Every plant looked the same up until about day six. After day six, however, it was clear that the plants were not as energetic as the control group plants growing in volcanic ash, and the plants were growing differently depending on which type of sample they were in. The plants grew more slowly and had poor roots and leaves. After 20 days, just before the plants started to flower, the team harvested the plants and studied them.

The team found the plants reacted differently depending on which sample — each collected from different areas on the Moon — was used. Plants grown in the Apollo 11 samples were not as strong as the other two sets. Nevertheless, the plants did grow.

This research opens the door to someday growing more plants rich in nutrition in habitats on the Moon. Plants are what enable us to be explorers.

【1】What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

A.It took 50 years to complete building the Apollo labs.

B.More labs will be built on the Moon in half a century.

C.Some supplies may be produced on the Moon in the future.

D.The conservation of the Moon helps explore the solar system.

【2】Why is Arabidopsis a most studied plant?

    A.It is productive.

    B.It is easy to plant.

    C.It is rich in nutrition.

    D.It is harvested conveniently.

【3】How is the third paragraph developed?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By following space order.

    C.By presenting procedures.

    D.By analyzing research findings.

【4】Which section of a website is the text most likely from?

    A.Wildlife.

    B.Education.

    C.Travel.

    D.Research.

  • 24、The Truth Can Set You Free

I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.

“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. Are you with the army?”

“No, I’m not.” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to re-register yet.

    “So what brings you here?”

He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”

“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.”

He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest.

“Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors(肿瘤)are on the inside.” And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.

He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.”

The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.

【1】The author was stopped by the police officer because ______.
