二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The year was 1999. I was 18, living with friends in a town about an hour north of Milwaukee. Desperate for adventure, we often talked about haunted (闹鬼的) locations, and even wandered around the woods near Rienzi Cemetery. So when a friend shared a story about an abandoned house just down the road from Rienzi, how could I possibly resist? The group of us jumped in the car and headed off into the wild unknown, completely unaware of the misfortune that would soon befall us.

The house was isolated, overgrown and barely visible from the road. Most of its windows were broken. It seemed completely neglected except the locked door and a NO ENTRY sign outside. How would anyone notice, or possibly even care, if we went in and looked around?

We stole inside, hoping for anything to prove the legend. Nothing valuable was found until an old letter, addressed to a Mr. J. Witherell, caught my eye. Its paper was stiff and yellowed. Excited by the physical evidence, I slipped the letter into my back pocket. I was about to exit the house when I noticed firetrucks and police cars lining up out on the road. While most of us were exploring the house, one of us managed to knock a fire detector off the ceiling, which triggered an automated alarm at the fire department. I quickly alerted the others, but there would be no escape.

After a moment of panic, we decided to go outside and face the music. To avoid a theft charge, I left the letter where it was before stepping outside.

The result? Not only did we all get fined for entering, we were required to pay for property damage totaling $1,500 each — too much for us to afford.

For so many years, I have been wondering: Why is the deserted house so heavily protected with detectors and other security measures? Why is the property regularly maintained? What's the story behind that mysterious letter?

1What did the shabby appearance of the house seem to remind the kids?

A.They would have no trouble entering it.

B.Their entry would bring them a surprise.

C.Their entry would disturb the neighbours.

D.Their behavior would be noticed by its owner.

2Why did the author attempt to take the letter away?

A.It might reveal who had been maintaining the house.

B.It might help uncover the mystery of the abandoned house.

C.It must have been written to disclose a tragedy.

D.It was an evidence of the house being heavily protected.

3What led the police cars and firetrucks to arrive so quickly?

A.The police officers were checking there.

B.The house owner reported to the police.

C.The police cars were passing by accident.

D.Some boy started the fire alarm system.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The empty house has been under strict protection.

B.The author wonders why they got fined.

C.No maintenance to the house is conducted regularly.

D.There is much mystery about the abandoned house.

  • 22、   We have a real crisis in this country in the basic understanding of science. It affects our global competitiveness as a country, our national security, and the effectiveness of our social system. The misunderstanding about science is blinding our eyes.

We know that an awful lot of teachers who are teaching science today have not been properly empowered to do so. School frequently isn’t testing whether you understand something but whether you’re familiar with it. What’s Newton’s second law? You say F=ma, and you get an A. That does not reflect a deep understanding of Newtonian mechanics. Science education is not just a body of facts; it’s a process. To present it with appeal and excitement you need to picture it as a detective story—asking questions, making observations, and collecting evidence. You test and you fail but, you know, failure can lead to discovery.

Another challenge we face is that science is often viewed as too hard, for experts only. But I don’t actually think it’s that difficult. People see science every day. They look outside and see weather and nature. They push a button in their house and the lights go on. Everybody’s dealing with science every day. They just don’t call it that. And it’s important they do. In fact, science is determining the quality and outcomes of their life.

Science needs creativity. And one of the best ways to be creative is to think “out of the box”. However, we need more courage when we come to practice. Take me for example. Very early in my teens I decided to educate myself. I realized I would never be a very good student because I didn’t like teachers judging me by what I thought were arbitrary (主观臆断的) standards. I decided I’d let the world judge me by whether I could do something of value—solve a problem or build something. That’s why I quit school early and risked everything to start a company. I risked everything I had because I had nothing to lose. I’d rather fail at trying to do something really big than succeed at being medium.

“When’s the right age to think creatively?” you may ask. I’d say in the womb (母腹)! Kids don’t have anxieties about trying to avoid failure. They are full of imagination and much more willing to fail. Just watch a 3-year-old. They touch everything, and if it hurts they don’t touch it again. They learn everything at a breathtaking rate. Start to think out of the box as early as you can, because it’s more likely to take you to places that you can’t predict, schedule and budget for. Do all that when you can bear the insecurity.

1According to the passage, science teachers should ________.

A.train students’ memory for right facts B.focus more on the learning process

C.present interesting detective stories D.abandon frequent science examinations

    2Paragraph 3 indicates that _______.

A.science is intended for experts only B.it’s important to see weather and nature

C.people can determine the quality of life D.we should realize science is around us

3The author takes his own example to say ________.

A.school education may do little good to students

B.teachers sometimes judge their students unfairly

C.people need to take an unusual path to be creative

D.failure at a big thing is better than a small success

4What’s the tone of the passage?

    A.Questioning. B.Encouraging.

    C.Praising. D.Complaining.

  • 23、D

“The really big concern over the last decade,” according to Dr. David Whitehead, “is the relative loss of opportunities for children to engage in child-led play.” That's true. One of the exhausting aspects of modern parenting is that everything, even doing nothing, has to be purposeful. Now that “parenting” has become a verb a state of doing, rather than simply being it can fed unnatural to leave your children to their own devices. Yet it creates spaces in which good things can happen. The psychology lecturer is responding to a survey showing that 80 percent of parents of small children feel under pressure to fill their days with “structured” activities. This, says Dr. Whitehead, is a mistake. Leaving your children to play on their own or with their peers enables them to develop “self-regulation abilities”, which in turn leads to better academic achievement.

One afternoon last autumn, sitting on a bench doing no parenting at all, I suddenly felt I was getting the hang of it.

That afternoon, my sister and I took our children to the park. We had lots to talk about, so we sat down on a bench and drove the children away. After briefly complaining, the cousins wandered off and started jumping into puddles (水洼).

They jumped and jumped, and then one of them kicked some muddy water at the others. My sister and I, deep in conversation, didn't notice this. So my nephew became more adventurous. He scooped up a handful of mud and threw it on my son's head. My son caught his breath happily, wiped the mud out of his eyes, and threw one back. My nephew, who has a talent for naming things, puffed out his tiny chest and roared: “Let's play Muddikins!”

The rules of Muddikins are simple. You run around throwing mud at each other until everyone is so thickly coated that you can no longer be sure which child is whose. Nothing is learnt from it; nobody is improved. It is pure fun, of the sort that can only happen when parents drop the reins (缰绳). They did it. Whoa, that's so cool,” said one. “I wish my mum was like you.”

【1】What is stressed in Paragraph 1?

    A. Child-led play matters in the development of children.

    B. Parents' concern over their children is unnecessary.

    C. Children's activities should be well organized.

    D. Parenting is everything in a family.

【2】What does the author think of the behavior of the children in the puddles?

    A. Amazing.   B. Troublesome.

    C. Adventurous.   D. Worthwhile.

【3】By saying “They did it” in the last paragraph, the author means that ______.

    A. The reins were dropped.

    B. She failed to distinguish her child.

    C. The children learned from the Muddikins.

    D. She confirmed Dr. David Whitehead's theory.

【4】The text is mainly about the relationship between _____.

    A. parents and children

    B. individual and group

    C. play and acquisition

    D. theory and practice

  • 24、   In Central America, sea turtle eggs are a popular cuisine dish. The eggs are hugely and secretly harvested onto tables, leaving the sea turtles listed as threatened. Yet we simply do not have the ability to continuously guard large beaches. Scientist Kim Williams was thinking hard when she had an “aha” moment: How about placing a fake(假的) egg containing a GPS tracker.

That’s how the special eggs come in. To build them:Williams and colleagues used a 3D printer. Then:they fixed in the smallest GPS tracking devices. As mother turtles laid their eggs under cover of night, the researchers slipped a single spy egg into each nest. Once they are covered in sand from the real ones: “it’s very difficult to tell the difference,” says Williams.

Of the 101 spy eggs, 25 were taken away while six of them were quickly discovered and left on the beach. The team received tracking data with the farthest egg travelling 137 kilometers inland and stopping at a local supermarket. The spy egg sent its final signal the next day from a personal house, suggesting that the research team had tracked the eggs all the way. The researchers stress that the tracker is not a way to catch local thieves: many of whom are living in poverty(贫穷), but rather a tool to better understand how the deal goes.

Still stopping stealing is not as simple as handing the tracking data over to the police. Across Central America, trade in sea turtle eggs can be legally ambiguous. In Costa Rica:for example, it is illegal to steal and sell sea turtle eggs but buying them is not a crime. It is not black and white. Meanwhile, local support is in need above all. “It but not tracking with eggs, is the real meat and potatoes of conservation,” says Williams.

1What is the major threat to the existence of sea turtles?

A.Unsafe GPS trackers. B.Unguarded Sea Beaches.

C.The popular dishes of sea turtles. D.The overhunt of turtle eggs.

2How does Williams explain her study in paragraph 2?

A.By listing scientific data. B.By making a comparison.

C.By clarifying the process. D.By using an expert’s words.

3The researchers tracked so many spy eggs to________.

    A.test the GPS trackers

    B.catch the egg thieves

C.look into the whole deal of turtle eggs

D.learn about the current situation of sea turtles

4Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Spy Eggs Save Endangered Sea Turtles

    B.Sea Turtles Draw International Concern

    C.GPS Trackers Improve Tracking Accuracy

    D.Central America Need Wildlife Protection
