21、Conventional wisdom is a major barrier to innovation that threatens the survival of companies everywhere. It’s based on the assumption that old ideas will always work,so they shouldn’t be challenged. While this may be a valid assumption in situations that don’t change,it’s unlikely to hold true in a changing situation. In today’s rapid changing global environment, old methods often don't work, and stubbornly using them can lead to major problems.
Most people seem to agree with conventional wisdom because it gives one a false sense of security. If everyone else believes it,then it must be true.Individuals who use conventional wisdom are certain that they are right, and being right is good. They want to continue using old ideas rather than take risks with changes that might not work.In 1977,Ken Olsen,co-founder and CEO of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC),stated “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home.” Despite being a dominant leader in the computer industry,DEC no longer exists.
People seem to forget that since innovation is a change, there can be no innovation without change.Unfortunately, conventional wisdom prevents leaders, followers and companies from changing and therefore innovating. If companies don’t innovate, but their competitors do,the future is likely to be problematic. Breaking from conventional wisdom has led to many of the most innovative companies and products in history across many industries,so it has a powerful effect on business success.
Ted Turner (founder of CNN) knew little,if anything, about the news business, but he knew it was inconvenient to watch news only at the dinner hour,as was common before CNN.Turner’s solution was to create a cable channel dedicated to news 24 hours a day.The news establishment reflected conventional wisdom at the time, and predicted his idea would fail because no one wanted to watch the news all day. However,it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that viewers don’t have to watch the news all day for the CNN to work.Viewers just have to watch when they want to get information.Due to conventional thinking, the critics failed to recognize the opportunity that was clear to Ted. They assumed that only what was familiar to them could work in the future.
Conventional wisdom prevents creativity, flexibility and risk-taking,so unconventional leaders enthusiastically break from it.To survive, thrive and maintain competitive advantage, companies must be flexible when reacting to change.

22、Look at the map of Spain and point at the center. You've located the country's capital and one of Europe's most beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.
History
This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe's largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid's most beautiful building.
Inside the Royal Palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum-quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.
Art
The Internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain. Opened in 1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world's most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings.
Shopping
Madrid has some of Europe's best shopping, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro where they find everything from antiques to CDs.
Entertainment
No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain's famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.
Food
Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants, but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 p.m., it's difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon, a kind of dry-cured ham: Spain is famous for it.

24、An American research company shows that $248.7 billion online sales are expected by 2014. It seems as if we can’t get enough of spending money through countless online clicks today. Following are some of the incredible things that you can buy online!
1) Parents
51-year-old Michael Amatrudo from Connecticut put a posting on Craig list in 2009 to sell his elderly parents, asking for $155 in return.
2) Chewing Gum
Bidding for Britney Spears’ chewing gum reached $14,000 in 2004. The pop star’s half-eaten sandwich also went for over $500.
3) Kidney Stone
Star Trek actor William Shatner sold his kidney stone for $20,000 when he put it up for sale online to see how much a piece of him was worth. He ended up giving the money to charity.
4) An Imaginary Friend
This imaginary guy went (or might still be going) by the name of Jon Malipieman and was sold on eBay for $3,000 by a man who claimed:
“My imaginary friend Jon Malipieman is getting too old for me now. I am now 27 and I feel I am growing out of him. He is very friendly. Along with him, I will send you what he likes and dislikes, his favorite things to do and his personal self portrait.”

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
The New York City sun was shining and no amount of air conditioning could help ease the discomfort from the burning heat. The numerous buildings rose tall above the tree lines in Central Park, seeing over the busy streets filled with crowds of workers dressed in gray and black suits, rushing to be on time for work.
Peter, an officer, walked out of his company to get brunch and buy groceries as he always did. He was a young man, dressed in a loose, white T-shirt and basketball shorts. He was wandering about the streets, easing his way through the crowd, listening to his favorite songs through his earphones.
Upon his usual route to his favorite restaurant, his joyful pace came to a stop when he felt a faint smell of smoke carried by the warm wind. He took out his earphones and looked around to see if anyone else was alarmed by the stench (恶臭). The crowd began to slow down as more people stopped at this smell. Fire trucks raced by with their alarms and Peter, along with the people around him, started to become worried. Then he saw thick, black smoke starting to cloud the blue skies. In curiosity, Peter headed in the direction of the smoke to find its source.
His heart was racing as the awful smell of the smoke strengthened. When the clouds of smoke were finally directly above him, Peter saw a huge building in flames, starting to fall down to ashes. When he finally emerged in the front, the big red flames were licking (舔) the sides of the walls and columns of fire shot through the roof.
When he finally was able to shake himself out of a state of shock, he saw a sign that said “Moving Company”. He remembered that morning his brother, Ryann told him and their mother their company was scheduled to deliver a shipment that day. And Ryann was in the building!
“I cannot leave Ryann alone in the building,” thought Peter.
