21、The numbers are shocking: women make up less than 25% of the STEM(science-technology-engineering-mathematics) workforce in the USA. Even if recent years have seen an increase, the numbers are still not representative of wider population.
Why does this under-representation of women matter? Research shows diverse teams perform better. Individuals from different genders, races, backgrounds and experiences bring different perspectives that can lead to creative solutions. Given the changes being brought on by the Fourth Industrial Revolution(4IR), we can't afford not to have all hands involved.
STEM fields are key to obtain the rewards of 4IR, but STEM fields are also key to dealing with the revolution's potential downsides, such as climate change, Internet-related war and the reorientation(再定位) of job sectors. So it is essential that women obtain the benefits and get involved in finding solutions.
However, why do women and girls participate in STEM fields at lower rates? Studies show that it is not an ability issue. Marian Wright, a children's rights activist, stated clearly, "You can't be what you can't see." When asked to draw a scientist, most students draw a white man in a lab coat. The great majority of portrayals of scientists and engineers in movies and television shows have been men.
But as awareness of the problem has grown, portrayals of women scientists and engineers in the media have begun to change. The success of movies like Hidden Figures, which tells the story of several African American women, working in engineering and mathematics, helped put the first humans into space, enables girls to not only see what women have already contributed, but to see themselves in that role.
4IR is changing the way we receive information, how we process it, how we work and what jobs we will do. It is happening at an unprecedented(前所未有的) pace. Because of this, we simply cannot afford to have any less than our whole population engaged and contributing. The historical focus of STEM courses at university and communities on weeding out students drove away women; now we need to focus on how to include everyone.

22、Time has always been of great interest to scientist...
Theory 1: According to Caltech cosmologist Dr Sean Carroll, the flow of time from past to future may be the symptom of our Universe having emerged from another universe that existed before the Big Bang and then gave birth to our own. Theory 2: In 1967, two American theorists came up with an equation describing the quantum state of the whole Universe. Known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, it includes many key features of the universe, such as its size. But one aspect is absent: time. Some theorists believe this implies that time only exists in our minds. Theory 3: According to theorist Prof Lee Smolin at the Perimeter Institute, Canada, the existence of life in the Universe is the result of the laws of physics evolving to their current state over an unlimited number of previous universes. If true, this means that our very existence is proof that time does exist. Theory 4: Dark energy, the mysterious anti-gravitational force that drives the expansion of the Universe, may be linked to the existence of the arrow of time. Last year, two cosmologists at the Yerevan Physics Institute showed that dark energy leads to the growth of entropy, a measure of disorder, in the Universe. |
【1】Which theory doesn’t include time?

B.Theory 2.
C.Theory 3.
D.Theory 4.
【2】According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of dark energy?

C.It is what makes the universe get bigger.
D.It leads to the existence of multi-universities.
【3】All the four theories imply that ________.
A.time does stay flexible

D.time does exist in some way
23、 When you install an app on your smartphone, you’re often asked whether you’d like to share your list of contacts with that app. That might be a convenient way to connect with friends and family, but it also means you’re giving away their personal information to the app developers.
And that personal information could end up being used to create so-called “shadow profiles” of your contacts —even if they don’t use that app or social media service.
Shadow profiles appeared as a potential problem in 2011 when an Ireland-based advocacy (辩护) group accused Facebook of gathering information on non-users, including names, email addresses and phone numbers.
The following year researchers showed that social network companies such as Facebook could use machine learning to pretty accurately predict whether two non-members known by the same member also know one another. And a recent study in the journal Science Advances raises the stakes.
In that work, David Garcia, chairman of systems design at the sci-tech university ETH , used a social network member’s personal information to infer relationship status and sexual orientation (倾向) of the members’ contacts who did not have their own user accounts on that social networking site.
He was able to do that using data from the Friendster social networking site. He says he chose those two attributes—relationship status and sexual orientation—because they can carry important privacy consequences and were both available in the Friendster data set.
Garcia is careful to point out that he didn’t prove that shadow profiles exist, just that they can be created. His work also reminds us how much we wind up giving away online-- about ourselves and about the people in our lives.
【1】According to Paragraph 3, “shadow profiles” meant to collect .
A.some users’ information
B.some non-users’ information
C.some social networking sites
D.some social network companies
【2】What does the underlined part “raises the stakes” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.use personal data

D.infer personal information
【3】Which of the following is not right?
A.Shadow profiles don’t exist.
B.Shadow profiles can be created
C.Contacts’ information can be predicted
D.Our information can be given away online

A.Positive B.Negative
C.Diligent D.Cautious
24、The amount of fish caught worldwide is much larger than has been reported. And that could mean serious problems for the environment and nations that depend on fisheries(渔业). A new estimate shows that it is 32 million tons higher than countries have been reporting yearly.
The same report notes that the world's fish catch has been declining since the late 1990s. Countries report their industrial catches to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. But they do not report other kinds of fishing. This include the catches of small commercial fisher, which are called artisanal fisheries, and fishing for recreation and individual food.
Daniel Pauly at the University of British Columbia in Canada led the study. He noted that a huge amount of some catches is thrown away. “For example, shrimp trawlers(拖网渔船)keep only the shrimp and the fish that they catch—often eight to ten times as much as the shrimp—gets thrown away.”
Pauly told VOA that better estimates of the actual global catch will help ensure there will be enough fish in the future. “But our figures suggest that since 1996 a rapid decrease is happening. And if you project this forward you end up in a few decades having much less catch, literally no catch. So that is potentially dangerous.”
Researchers also found ways the world's fisheries are changing. They found that fishing fleets of larger nations are catching fish in the waters of developing countries more and more.
Pauly said he was surprised by the amount of fishing done by foreign fleets in competition with local fishers. “In West Africa, the figure that was most astonishing is the enormous role of foreign fishing—of European and Asian vessels fishing legally or illegally——and competing against local fishers. On the other hand for the U. S., Australia and some developing countries, such as the Bahamas, what was apparent is the enormous contribution of recreational fisheries, which also never get reported to the FAO.”
Researchers say inaccurate data also harms the development and supervision(监管)of effective policy and management measures.
