    Dear Principal Stanton,

The date for our annual Desert Path Pride Spirit Week is rapidly coming and the Student Council has been discussing some new ideas about how to celebrate school pride this year. Since Spirit Week is the week before scheduled testing, we would like to suggest combining student festivities with preparation for testing. We want to assure you that all activities would focus on academics while providing fun for those involved.

Our plan for the week is as follows:

Monday—Math Day would include fun math games in the classrooms and school-wide activities such as guessing the number of bricks in a building, recording times at relay races, and competitions for multiplication facts.

Tuesday—Reader’s Roundup would focus on books and authors. Students and teachers can come dressed as their favorite author or character from a book. This day would be great for the contest of “Best Reader”. Older students can share reading time with younger aged buddies.

Wednesday—Writer’s Day would display student writing from previously held competitions for types of writing like poems, stories and essays. Of course there would be prizes given for outstanding writing in each category.

Thursday—No Fear Day would be where we have our spirited assembly (集合) to get us ready for testing. The Student Council could even put on a skit(短剧) showing how all of us at Desert Path are ready for test week.

These are just a few of the ideas we are asking you to consider. We would like to have the opportunity to meet with you and discuss our plan and to hear what ideas you may have for Spirit Week. Please let us know when you can schedule some time to meet.

  • 22、I believe honesty is one of the greatest gifts there is. I know people call it a lot of fancy names these days, like integrity and forthrightness. But it doesn’t make any difference what they call it; it’s still what makes a man a good citizen. This is my code, and I try to live by it.

I’ve been in the business for thirty-five years, and know there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers have to be tough fellows to be able to take the job in New York. You’ve got to be tough to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day these days. Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the wrong impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers are just like other ordinary people. Most of them will shake down as honest fellows. You read in the papers almost every week where some taxi drivers tum in money or jewels, or stuff like that, left in their taxis. If they weren’t honest, you wouldn’t be reading those stories in the papers.

One time in Brooklyn, I found a gold ring in my taxi. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of purchases that day; so I went back to where I had dropped her. It took me almost two days to trace her down in order to return the ring to her. I didn’t get more than a “thank you”. Still, I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she did.

In all my years of driving a taxi, I have never had any trouble with the public, not even with the drunk. Even if they get a little stubborn once in a while, I just agree with them and then they behave themselves. People ask me about tips. As far as I know, practically everyone will give you something. Come to think of it, most Americans are pretty generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they tip or not. I believe in goodness of others and try to be a good member of my community. I try to act toward others as how I want to be treated. I have been trying this for a long time, and the longer I try, the easier it gets.

【1】What kind of people are most taxi drivers indeed?

    A.Rude.

    B.Honest.

    C.Greedy.

    D.Aggressive.

【2】What happened after the author returned the gold ring?

A.The owner was wild with joy.

B.He was spoken highly of by the owner.

C.The owner didn’t present much gratitude.

D.He was in sadness due to the owner’s reaction.

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The author tried to make the world better.

B.The author often gives rides to the drunk.

C.Americans always find fault with taxi drivers.

D.The author treats American customers better.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A.Customers Are Our God

    B.Honesty Is a Great Gift

C.The Golden Rules of Being a Taxi Driver

D.Secrets of Getting on with Customers

  • 23、   Mid-Autumn Festival is the second grandest festival in China after Chinese New Year. It’s a time when families come together to appreciate the full moon and eat mooncakes during the festival. In fact, besides these two traditions, there are many others.

    1. Watching the tide

In ancient times, watching the tide on the Qiantang River in East China’s Zhejiang province was another grand event of Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been recorded in detail since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220). Many famous ancient poets, like Su Shi in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) wrote about the grand occasion in their poems.

    2. Making colorful lanterns

On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, people usually make colorful lanterns to decorate th beautiful night. They also make Kongming lanterns, which can fly because the burning candles h t the air in the lanterns. Children write good wishes on the lanterns and let them fly up into the sky.

    3. Burning pagodas (佛塔)

When night falls, people gather together in an empty place, and pick up broken bricks and tiles to pile up several pagodas. The pagodas are hollow and are filled with firewood. Then the firewood in the pagodas is lit, and the red flames rise and sparks explode, through which people express the joy of harvest in autumn.

    4. Stealing vegetables

Among the Dong ethnic group in Central China’s Hunan province, it is the custom for young ladies to steal vegetables on Mid-Autumn Festival night. Whoever eats vegetables with sweet dew on this night will be healthy and happy. Also, women and girls express their adoration to their favorite young men by this way.

    5. Drinking osmanthus-flavored wine

Osmanthus-flavored wine is a gift during this season. Drinking Osmanthus fragrance wine at Mid-Autumn Festival implies sweetness, wealth and luck, and prosperity of the family.

People gather together to appreciate the moon, on which Wu Gang, who chases Chang’e, is cutting a sweet-scented osmanthus tree outside the Moon Palace, according to a legend. They drink the sweet osmanthus-flavored wine to echo the festival atmosphere.

1What do people usually do during Mid-Autumn Festival?

A.People in Hunan province steal vegetables on Mid-Autumn Festival night.

B.People drink Osmanthus fragrance wine to appreciate the moon and honor Chang'e.

C.People make Kongming lanterns to express good wishes and the joy of harvest in autumn.

D.People watch the tide on the Qiantang River, which dates back to the Han Dynasty.

  • 24、   Be on time. It's a simple command, and one you've probably heard since you were a child. 1 But, as an adult, if you're habitually late, you run the risk of ruining your professional reputation-no matter how smart, competent, or capable you might be. 2 Here are some reasons why it definitely does—along with my tips for making punctuality a priority.

    It Shows You Care

We live in an extraordinarily busy world. We schedule meetings and appointments back-to-back, constantly surrounded by phone calls, emails, and texts that need to be answered "immediately." Getting to a meeting or appointment on time shows that it's important to you, and something for which you've planned.3

    It Shows You're Responsible

Your co-workers, clients, and partners want to know that they can trust you to get the job done-and being punctual is an easy way to demonstrate that you can. 4 Conversely, flying down the hallway, showing up breathless to a meeting, then hurrying for your papers and notes gives an impression of chaos and disorder-not exactly the message you want to send.

    It Reduces Stress

You know how stressful being late can be. But constantly rushing and scrambling to catch up not only makes you feel being in a panic— 5 Making sure that you show up on time prevents all that anxiety in the first place (yours and theirs!). Instead of panicking about the clock, you can focus your attention on what really matters—your job.

A.Being late can cost you friends.

B.And, of course, one you've likely ignored before.

C.it also makes everyone around you anxious and uncomfortable.

D.it also makes you earn a reputation of being someone others can count on.

E.It indicates that you're organized, responsible, and in control of your time.

F.If you think punctuality doesn't matter, think again.

G.Being late, however, sends the message that your time is more valuable than everyone else's.
