二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“You should get a cat,” my doctor said. “A cat?” I couldn’t even look after myself. I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a feline (猫科的) friend into my life.

Adopting an animal during the height of the pandemic was far from easy. When my partner and I found Cinnamon, her adoption profile made her out as the perfect kitten. We filled out the paperwork and had a few weeks to prepare for her arrival.

When she came home, it became increasingly obvious that Cinnamon didn’t understand “no”, “stop it” or “don’t do that”. She was the worst cat I’ve ever owned. I was beginning to doubt my doctor’s advice.

We decided to start taking her for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Cinnamon. Cinnamon showed me what bravery looked like if there was a dog at a park, she would run toward it. She jumped without knowing where she would land. She loved adventure. I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

Cinnamon unfortunately passed away after a medical accident, leaving a cat-sized hole in my heart the day she left us at only six months old. I’m no stranger to sadness or grief, but losing my pet so suddenly was the most confusing emotional experience I’ve ever had. She was supposed to help me through more of my life than the three short months we had her.

Our time is often cut unpredictably, unmistakably short. It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous.

【1】Why did the doctor advise the author to get a cat?

A.To teach her to interact with animals.

B.To assist her to fill up her spare time.

C.To help her out of her mental disease.

D.To ensure her safety in time of pandemic.

【2】Which of the following best describes the cat Cinnamon?

    A.Stupid but lovely.

    B.Outgoing and aggressive.

    C.Stubborn but courageous.

    D.Naughty and adventurous.

【3】What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

    A.Why Cinnamon loved going outside.

B.How Cinnamon affected the author positively.

C.Why the author decided to take Cinnamon outside.

D.How Cinnamon interacted with the author outdoors.

【4】What message does the story convey?

A.The loss of a pet is painful.

    B.The short life is unpredictable.

    C.Friendship with pets is helpful.

D.The courage to take risks is beneficial.

  • 22、Wanda Smith always wanted to be a school teacher but sometimes meeting life's demanding realities could mean a dream delayed. A mother of three, Smith also cared for her mom. While squarely shouldering her family responsibilities, she took jobs as bus monitor and custodian for Brenham Independent School District in Texas. The hours were tiring, but rather than let her dream die, at age 37, with the support and encouragement of her husband, she added night classes to her schedule. Nine years on, she finally graduated with a bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University. She was a certified teacher at last.

Smith's story came full circle when she was hired as a first-grade teacher back at Brenham Elementary School. "When I stand in front of my classroom - my classroom - I am living my dream," Smith said during a TODAY show. During the pandemic, as some of her students struggled to meet the demands of distance learning, Smith stepped up to the challenge. Noting that many of the kids she teaches came from single-parent families, she began delivering packets of schoolwork to them at home. It's no wonder Smith's kids adored her. In a special surprise ceremony, they shouted their praise and held up big colorful signs declaring their devotion.

The sentiment was echoed by Brenham's mayor, Milton Tate Jr., who officially declared May 4, 2021 as "Be the Best You Can Be" Wanda Smith Day. The phrase was also carved on a commemorative schoolyard bench, and in addition, a scholarship for up-and-coming teachers at Sam Houston State has been established in her name.

Smith's life is an example as well as an inspiration. By always striving to be the best she could be, with hard work and perseverance, she graduated from cleaning classrooms to leading classrooms.

【1】What prevented Smith from achieving her dream at a younger age?

    A.Her heavy family burden.

    B.Her strong love for mother.

    C.The lack of family support.

    D.The demanding academic requirements.

【2】What's the students' attitude towards Smith?

    A.Concerned.

    B.Respectful.

    C.Critical.

    D.Sympathetic.

【3】Which of the following facts shows Smith's influence beyond her school?

A.A day was celebrated nationwide in her name.

B.Her name was carved on a schoolyard bench.

C.Colorful signs were held by her students.

D.A scholarship was created in her honor.

【4】What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To stress the importance of setting up a dream.

B.To advocate lifelong learning by introducing Smith's story,

C.To show how Smith achieved her best with heart and devotion.

D.To illustrate how Smith's experience inspired the people around.

  • 23、Facebook announced today that it exceeded ( 超越) one of its biggest environmental goals: it managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 94 percent in 2020. It had previously promised to cut planet-heating emissions by 75 percent. The company said that it had also achieved its goal of “net zero emissions”.

Facebook also announced that it had achieved another goal: it now purchases enough renewable energy to cover 100 percent of its global operations, which includes its offices and data centers. But that doesn’t mean that all of its operations are actually powered by renewables like solar and wind energy—at least not yet.

Renewable energy is on the rise, but most electricity grids (电网) still rely on fossil fuels. When companies can’t purchase enough renewable energy from utilities because there isn’t enough supply, they buy renewable energy certificates that signal that the company invested in renewable energy projects somewhere. Those projects can be located anywhere, and certificates have been sold for so cheap that experts say they don’t really lead to more renewable energy production. Facebook also relies on renewable energy certificates, but it focuses on signing long-term contracts to support the construction of new solar and wind developments in the same places where it operates. I’s invested in 63 new renewable energy projects located on the same electrical grids as its data centers.

Facebook has recently also tried to limit misinformation about climate change on its platform. Last year, it launched a “Climate Science Information Center” in some countries. In the UK this year, it started adding a label to some posts about climate change that redirect people to its information center. It all comes on the heels of criticism from activists and policymakers over how misinformation about climate change festered on the site, including one famous case of Facebook reversing(撤销) a “false” rating that its fact -checkers gave based on inaccurate information.

【1】W hat achievement did Facebook gain recently?

A.It totally used solar and wind energy for its operations.

B.It cut down its climate pollution more than planned.

C.It reached its goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions.

D.It invested a new renewable energy project.

【2】How do the experts respond to the renewable energy certificate?

A.They pay little attention to it.

B.They have become bored with it.

C.They think it is a waste of money.

D.They think it brings little actual benefit.

【3】Which can best take the place of the underlined word “festered” in paragraph 4?

    A.Recognized.

    B.Exchanged.

    C.Worsened.

    D.Decreased.

【4】Which of the following can be a best title for the text?

A.Facebook hit several key climate goals

B.Take action to prevent climate change

    C.Renewable energy is mankind’s hope

D.Say no to greenhouse gas emissions

  • 24、NASA is developing the capabilities needed to send humans to an asteroid(小行星)by 2025 and then Mars in the 2030s—goals outlined in NASA’s official documents 2014.

Mars is a rich destination tor scientific discovery and robotic and human exploration as we expand our presence into the solar system.Future exploration could uncover evidence of life, answering one of the fundamental mysteries:Does life exist beyond Earth?

While robotic explorers have studied Mars for more than 40 years,NASA’s path for the human exploration of Mars begins in low-Earth orbit aboard the International Space Station.Astronauts on the orbiting laboratory are helping us prove many of the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions(任务)to deep space, including Mars. The space station also advances our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronaut health.

Our next step is deep space, where NASA will send a robotic mission to catch and redirect an asteroid to orbit the moon.Astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft will explore the asteroid in the 2020s,returning to Earth with samples. This experience in human spaceflight beyond low-Earth orbit will help NASA test new systems, which we’ll need to send cargo(货物)as part of human missions to Mars.Beginning in FY 2018,NASA’s powerfull Space Launch System(SLS)rocket will enable these "proving ground" missions to test new technologies.Human missions to Mars will rely on Orion and an evolved version of SLS that will be the most powerful launch vehicle ever flown。

A lot of robotic spacecraft and rovers(探测器)already are on and around Mars, greatly increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way of future human explorers. The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover measured radiation on the way to Mars and is sending back radiation data from the surface. This data will help us plan how to protect the astronauts who will explore Mars.Future missions like the Mars 2020 rover, seeking signs of past life, also will demonstrate new technologies that could help astronauts survive on Mars.

Engineers and scientists around the country are working hard to develop the technologies astronauts will use to one day live and work on Mars, and safely return home from the next giant leap for humanity.NASA also is a leader in a Global Exploration Roadmap, working with international partners and the U.S.commercial space industry with human missions to the surface of Mars as the driving goal.

【1】It can be learnt from the first three paragraphs that .

A.Mars is the perfect place for scientific discovery and human settlement

B.astronauts’physical changes in the space station should be recorded

C.NASA intends to send robotic explorers and humans to Mars in 2025

D.astronauts in the space station are testing technologies for better life on the Earth

    【2】The Orion Spacecraft_________.

    A.will send cargo to Mars

B.was built to explore low-earth orbit

C.needs SLS rocket to finish its mission

D.will bring back samples of an asteroid

【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.the U.S.commercial space industry is a leader in exploration to Mars.

B.Many protective measures are needed when exploring Mars.

C.NASA is an agency that plans to explore Mars in secret.

D.Curiosity rover is the first rover to be sent to Mars.

【4】Which can be the best title of this passage?

    A.Future life on Mars

    B.Research for the Solar System

    C.NASA’s Journey to Mars

    D.Exploration of life Beyond Earth
