24、 Animals, including insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating with each other.
Can you see the rabbit's tail which is moving up and down? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has done this by using its body language.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra is angry, it raises its hood and makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make sounds like “Oh” or “Ah!” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes.
But we have something that no animals have—a large number of words that have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other all kinds of different information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have.

25、When I was looking for a Christmas present for my daughter in a toy store, a nicely dressed little girl, with some money in her little hand, was looking at some beautiful dolls. When she saw a doll she liked, the girl would ask her father if she had enough money. And the caring man usually said yes.
At the same time, a boy, in old and small clothes, was looking at some video games in a corner.
He also had money in his hand, but it looked no more than five dollars. As a result, each time the boy picked up one of the video games and looked at his father, the old man shook his head.
The little girl had chosen her favorite doll, a very beautiful one. However, she noticed the boy and his father. She saw the boy give up the video game with disappointment and then silently walk to another corner of the store.
The little girl put her doll back to the shelf and ran over to the video game. After she talked to her father, she paid for the video game and whispered (耳语) to the shop assistant.
So the boy got the video game that he wanted for free—he was told it was a present from the store. He smiled happily, although he felt it was so unbelievable.
The girl saw all this happen. She smiled, too.
When I walked out of the store to my car, I heard the loving father asking his little daughter why she had done that. I would never forget their short talk.
“Daddy, didn’t you want me to buy something that would make me happy?” “Of course,” said the man. “Well, I just did!”

26、John James Audubon was born on April 26, 1785 in Haiti. John spent much of his childhood in France where he spent many hours outdoors painting the world around him. In 1803 he moved to the United States, and found the animals in his new home were among the most beautiful in the world. He enjoyed watching the birds.
John spent much of his early adulthood trying and failing at many businesses in the United States. Instead of taking care of business, John was usually exploring in the wilderness.
At first, John spent his time hunting for food and sport, but he became more interested in the birds he found. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the types and noticing their behaviours. He often sketched(素描)and painted the birds he was watching.
He was so sad that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family, so he tried to improve his painting skills and began to sell his pictures. He discovered that he could earn some money doing something he really enjoyed.
John wanted to have his collection of bird paintings published. He found no one in America who was willing to publish his works, so in 1826, John left for London, England. He and his paintings were well-received because it helped people in London see what wildlife faraway America looked like.
It wasn’t long before he was able to publish his masterpiece, Birds of America. Some people called his work the “Double Elephant Folio” because it was very large. The pages were over three feet tall and over two feet wide.
The public loved John’s books and he had finally earned lots of money. He was famous as one of the greatest artists and naturalists of his time.

27、In 1845, a deadly disease struck Ireland, killing all the Lumper potato plants. In another place or time, the death of single crop species might not have been so important. But in Ireland, in 1845, people depended almost solely on the potato for food. The death of one species caused a terrible famine(饥荒). Now, some scientists are worried that such a famine could happen again, but on a much wider area.
Over the centuries, farmers have discovered thousands of different species of food crops. However, you won’t find many of these species in your local supermarket. To feed the seven billion people on Earth, most farmers today are growing only species of plants and farming only species of animals that are easy to produce in large numbers.
In the Philippines, there were once thousands of varieties of rice: now fewer than 100 are grown there. In China, 90% of the wheat varieties grown just a century ago have disappeared. Scientists believe that over the past century, more than half of the world’s food varieties disappeared.
One solution to this problem is to collect and store the seeds as many different plant varieties as we can before they disappear. The idea was first suggested by Russian scientist Nikolay Vavilov. In the 1920s and 1930s, he collected around 400,000 seeds from five continents. More recently, others are continuing the work he began.
In the US state of Iowa, Diane Ott Whealy wanted to protect historic plant varieties, like the seeds her great grandfather brought to the US from Germany more than a hundred years ago. She and her husband started a place called Heritage Farm, where people can store and trade seeds.
More importantly, people at Heritage Farm don’t just store the seeds, they plant them. By doing this, they are reintroducing foods into the marketplace that haven’t been grown for years. These food species are not just special in terms of appearance or taste. They also offer farmers food solutions for the future, from the past.
【1】What is this passage mainly about?
A.The fact that many food species are dying out.
B.The need to protect potatoes from disappearing.
C.The ways to increase the number of food species.
D.The ways to prevent food species from disappearing.
【2】The underlined word “solely” in Paragraph 1 is in closest meaning to __________ .
A.immediately
B.only
C.rarely
D.occasionally
【3】Why are some scientists worried that such a famine could happen again?
A.Because people depend on certain species of food crops.
B.Because the same deadly disease may attack crops again.
C.Because the world’s population is larger than that in 1845.
D.Because farmers grow the same potatoes as those in the past.
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A.The disease spread very quickly and killed many people in Ireland.
B.Around 80 percent of the rice varieties in the Philippines have disappeared.
C.Heritage Farm is the first place in the US for people to store and trade seeds.
D.People have been storing seeds to save plant varieties for more than 150 years.
