  • 26、It’s time for school! But on May 14th, 170 students at Duncanville High School in Texas, US,

were told to go back home. Why? Because they were wearing the wrong clothes to school.

Schools in the US don’t always ask students to wear uniforms. But they have dress codes (着装要求). For example, Duncanville High School tells students to wear belts, shirts without logos(标识). Schools’ most-hated clothes are different.

Now, the favorite new target(目标) of the school dress code is leggings(紧身裤), reported the Associated Press. Some schools don’t allow leggings. Other schools ask students to wear a shirt or a skirt over leggings.

Some students complain(抱怨) that schools are going too far. But schools say dress codes help protect students’ safety and make sure they grow up with good taste.

  • 27、Amy was looking for a gift for her little daughter. She stopped in front of a store full of dolls.

“Girls like dolls,” she thought as she stepped into the store. Looking around, she saw a grandma doll – one with gray hair and a pair of glasses. It made her think of Joyce, her own mother.

When Amy was a little girl, she got her first doll from Joyce for her birthday. Then the second, the third... the dolls never arrived late, year after year. “Why always a doll?” This question had been in Amy’s mind until one day her father gave the answer. Joyce dreamed of having a doll when she was a child herself. Her parents promised one for her fifth birthday. Sadly, they both died in a traffic accident before it arrived. The never-received gift was the most precious one in her eyes.

Recalling her mother’s story, Amy got an idea. It was Joyce’s 60th birthday. She got a package with a card that read:

    Dear Joyce,

I forget to send you a package that you should have received on May 20, 1956, your fifth birthday.

The gift inside has aged, but I felt that you might still want to have it.

    Love,

    Angel of Joy

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words.(在短文的空格内容中填入适当的单词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给)

How to survive a disaster? Most survivors says that nothing felt, sounded or looked the way they would have expected. Reality was in some ways better, in other ways w1. They say there are things they wish they had known.

On September 28, 1994, a ship called the Estonia sank, which was the worst sea disaster in modern European h2. Kent was then a 29-year-old passenger. He was hanging out in the bar with some other passengers that night. Suddenly, the ship list to 30º, hurling passengers across its passageways. Kent began to act at once. “I started to react very differently from normal. I started to say, ‘Oh the boat is sinking.’ ”Like many survivors, Kent experienced a state in which the brain focuses on the individual experience, “I just say my small world.”

But as Kent made his way into the corridor, he noticed something strange. Not just one or two passengers, but entire groups seemed unable to m3. They were conscious (有意识的), but they were not reacting.

In the case of the Estonia and other diseases, the freezing response may have been a natural and horrible m4. Under extreme stress, our brains search for a proper survival response and sometimes choose the wrong one. But the more encouraging point is that the brain is plastic. It can be trained to respond more properly. If we can r5 our own fear even a little bit, we might be able to do better.

Fire drills, particularly if they are unexpected, can dramatically reduce fear. Knowing where the stairs are in a building can give your brain an a6. Safety drills give our brains blueprints in the unlikely event that we need them. We can also help each other do better. Many flight attendants are now rained to scream at passengers in burning planes, “Get out! Go!” People r7 well to leadership in a disaster, and then they can do remarkable things.
