Fu Cong, known as the “greatest modern pianist” and “piano poet”, died of COVID-19 at a hospital in London last year. You may not be familiar with him, but you might have read the book Fu Lei’s Family Letters (《傅雷家书》) written by his father Fu Lei, a famous translator and writer, which influenced a generation of Chinese readers.

Fu Cong was born on March 10th, 1934, in Shanghai. A lover of classical music from a young age. 1.傅聪7岁的时候开始上钢琴课。But the chaos (混乱) of wartime China prevented him from receiving a systematic musical education. 2. Then in his teens, Fu Cong moved with his family to Yunnan, where he experienced an unusual period.

Between 1954 and 1966, Fu Cong spent a lot of time away from home to train as a piano player. 3.结果,写信成为了傅雷与儿子交流的常见方式。The letters fully showed Fu Lei’s family tradition and value. To Fu Lei, education is not only a family matter, but also something with great social value.

Fu Lei also advised his son to read famous Chinese texts. He told Fu Cong to fully understand their meanings and connect ideas with feelings in order to become a better person. Fu Lei thinks learning to be a good person comes before any academic (学术) training. On 27th December 1954, Fu Lei wrote, “Everyone should be a good person before becoming an expert in any field. Otherwise, 4. that person will not get much academic achievement, no matter how knowledgeable he is.”

    5. Full of advice, encouragement, and a father’s love, Fu Lei’s Family Letters became a best seller in China. It has been sold more than one million copies in China and has been translated into Japanese and Korean. It helps many young students understand how they should live their lives.

  • 24、Liang Xiyan still misses her long black hair, which was cut two weeks ago.

Liang became a senior high school student in September. In her new school, the rules say that boys’ hairstyles must be cropped (剪短) and girls’ hair cannot fall below their shoulders.

Liang’s school is not alone: many have similar rules on hairstyles. Teachers think a cool hairstyle is a waste of time and money. It may alsodistractstudents from their studies. “Your personality is not shown in how you wear your hair but in your ability,” say teachers.

It’s difficult for students to follow these rules. Teenage students like to look nice but they are asked to wear school uniforms. Liang says the only way in which they can be different lies in how they wear their hair. And they want to copy their favorite stars’ hairstyles. They wouldn’t be happy in a school with strict rules.

“I prefer a school with rules on hairstyles,” said Li Man, a Senior 1 student. She said her school’s rules on hairstyles are OK but there could be some little changes. “For example, boys should be allowed to have their hair a little longer,” Li said. “But students must not dye or curl their hair (染发或烫发). This way there will not be so many complaints.”

1Which of the following hairstyles is not allowed in Liang’s school?

    2Paragraph 3 mainly tells us   .

    B. must not have a cool hairstyle

    C. should wear the same shoes to school

    D. can show they are different by wearing their favorite clothes

  • 26、When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east—the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.

After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied,” you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked carefully over them, but it was still too dark to see anything.

Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world—the Grand Canyon.

I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!

I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world?” I certainly know the answer.

【1】What does the word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A.The dark path.

    B.The gate.

    C.The car.

    D.The Grand Canyon.

【2】Why was there nothing to see?

    A.Because there was nothing.

B.Because it was in the morning.

    C.Because it was raining.

    D.Because it was too dark.

【3】What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?

A.To give facts about the natural world.

B.To say how he feels about the natural world.

C.To tell an interesting story about the Grand Canyon.

D.To attract people to visit the Grand Canyon.
