Florence Nightingale was the first great nurse in the world. She was born in a rich family on May 12, 1820. She was very kind-hearted and enjoyed helping others, especially people who were sick. 65 She thought that helping patients was both a duty and a pleasure. So she decided to be a nurse when she was 24. But her parents didn’t agree. 66 Her family had lots of money, so they thought it was not necessary for her to work. Besides, nurses were not well respected(尊敬) at that time. But Nightingale didn’t change her mind. She believed that her dream would come true. Later she went to Germany and France to learn to be a nurse. At that time there were no nursing schools. 67所以她不得不学习大量的护理知识。

During the war she went to the front hospitals to look after soldiers. 68她为病人买了衣服、药品还有食物。She always took good care of the soldiers with a lamp in her hands at night and soldiers called her “The lady with the lamp”.

After the war. Nightingale opened the world’s first nursing school. She went on serving the others through her work as a nurse.

In 1910, she died quietly in her sleep at the age of ninety. 69 In 1974, her birthday became International Nurses’ Day because of the great love and help she gave to people.

  • 26、   A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms (习语), though my teacher told us the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.

One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be surprised. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not a right topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was wonderful.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted (打断) again by his words: “You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “ You don’t say’ actually means ‘really!’ It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.” I realized I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions. Remember: what the English teachers said is always right to us students.

3After the Englishman explained the idiom, ___________.

A.I felt I was very silly B.I thought the English teacher was really a fool

C.I became more careful in everything D.the Englishman became a real fool

  • 27、Nearly eight hundred million people in this world cannot read or write, most of them in developing countries. Two-thirds are women and girls.

John Wood who started the Room to Read campaign(运动), has opened 1,650 schools and 15,000 libraries in some of the world’s poorest communities(社区). He said that from the beginning, Room to Read’s goal was to reach 10 million children around the world in the poorest countries.

In 1998, on a three-week vacation journey in Nepal, Wood met a local headmaster who invited him to visit his school in a far mountain village. The experience changed Wood’s life.

“This headmaster had 450 students at the school, but he didn’t have any books,” Wood said.” He had a library that was empty.”

Wood promised to fill the library shelves and returned to the village year later with some of his friends with 3,000 books. And that was just the start. Later, Wood used some of his personal money to start Room to Read. He believes that world change begins with educated children. Today, the programme can be found in 10 countries across Asia and Africa.

Wood believes the key to the program’s success is local support .While Room to Read gives away money and provides books, communities offer land and parents help build the school. Agnes, a Room to Read teacher in Zambia who also runs the library, is proud to say the literacy at her school has improved. Room to Read’s biggest challenge is the huge need. Hundreds of communities have asked for literacy programmes.
