  • 24、Depression (抑郁症) is a serious problem today. One expert says that depression is like cancer because it is “widespread, costly and deadly”. Depression hits one person in five around the world.

Although people have believed depression to be a problem among the rich and educated, studies shows that depression among everyone. Over any six-month period, between five to seven percent of the world’s population will be suffering from a serious depression.

A recent research shows that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults.

The researchers used a nationwide long-term survey of teenage health to investigate the relationship between media (传媒) use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 2000.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and a half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.

Seven years later, in 2007, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one.

The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games of radio etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount (总量) of media use.

The study didn’t explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility is that it was taking time away from activities that could help prevent depression.

Last December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, to take part in religious services and to be volunteers.

【2】Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “investigate” in paragraph 3?

    A.build

    B.break

    C.balance

    D.Explore

【3】What can we learn about depression?

A.Only rich and educated people may suffer from depression.

B.Depression hits 20 percent of people around the world.

C.Teenagers are more likely to develop depression.

D.It is a common illness that can be cured easily.

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Social activities may lead to depression.

  • 25、We live in a society that is producing and using electronics(电子产品)all the time. How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?  Most people just throw them away. E-waste is created and has become a serious problem. It really needs our attention.

Burying(填埋)e-waste or burning it causes serious problems for the environment. Electronics have dangerous things in them. These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt.

In recent years, many countries have started recycling(循环利用)e-waste. Setting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem. E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can be reused and deal with the rest properly.

Another way is to make producers responsible for their used products. This means that producers must take back old products which are no longer wanted. They should then make sure they are properly recycled or reused.

Apple, for example, now recycle people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices.

As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste. Change electronics only when we have to. And don’t buy a product just to have the latest model. e-waste is a serious problem in the modern  world. We must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.

1According to the passage, __________ is NOT a form of e-waste.

    A. a computer   B. an MP4 player   C. a radio   D. a bike

2The writer takes Apple as an example to tell us __________ should do their part.

    A. governments   B. e-cycling centers   C. users   D. producers

3According to the passage, it’s a good way to __________.

    A. burn e-waste in the field   B. send e-waste to e-cycling center

    C. throw away e-waste into a garbage can   D. bury e-waste under the ground

4The main purpose of this passage is to __________.

    A. show us that e-waste is useful

    B. advise people to deal with e-waste properly

    C. encourage people to buy more electronic products

    D. help to build e-cycling centers

  • 26、   Even the closest star to us, Proxima Centauri, is very far away.

Scientists would love to get a closer look at this star and its planets. But the fastest spaceship ever built would take nearly 75,000 years to get there. That's just too long!

Scientists have come up with a plan-send a group of very tiny spaceships. Why tiny? The smaller something is, the easier it is to make it go fast. They're hoping a group of stamp-sized ships(Star Chips)could travel fast enough to reach Proxima Centauri in just 20 years. There they could take pictures and collect information. If there is any life there, the Star Chips might be able to find it-and say hello from Earth.

Each Star Chip will carry a tiny camera, thrusters, and sensors. It will ride a sail about the size of a picnic table. The plan is to send many, in case some don't make it.

Scientists hope that their tiny Star Chips will be able to reach a speed of 134 million miles(216 million km)an hour. First, the rocket will take the Star Chips to space. Once in space, they will open their shining sails. Then, people on Earth will shoot out lasers at the sails. All those lasers shot at the sails will push the Star Chips so fast that they will reach the moon in just two minutes.

The computer chip at the heart of each Star Chip is tiny like the ones in mobile phones. None of the other technologies has been built yet. The hardest part will be the lasers, which have to be extremely powerful. The team will also need to invent a light, strong, and very shiny material  for the sails, and tiny cameras powerful enough to take pictures of planets. And they'll have to find a way to send those pictures back to Earth. There's a lot of work ahead. But if they succeed, the heart of a mobile phone may be the very first interstellar traveler.

1Scientists plan to invent the Star Chip mainly because it .

A.could send messages to other planets B.could take photos and collect information

C.could find life in other stars and planets D.could be small enough to travel much faster

2Powerful lasers will be shot at Star Chips to .

A.make sure Star Chips won't be hit in space B.send Star Chips to space from Earth safely

C.open the strong and shining sails of Star Chips D.give Star Chips enough energy to travel in space

3What technologies about Star Chips are still waiting to be built?

The way to send pictures back to Earth.

The strong and shiny material for the sails.

The tiny cameras able to take photos of planets.

The chip as small as the ones in mobile phones.

    A.①②③ B.②③④

    C.①②④ D.①③④

4What is the best title of the passage?

A.A Chip with Great Power B.A New Coming Spaceship

C.A Big Problem about Star Chips D.A Great Trip to Proxima Centauri

  • 27、In a way, our moods (情绪) change with the weather. Going to a warm place in the middle of winter can make our moods better. Pleasant weather can improve moods and memory. However, extremely hot weather can make us feel more tired and bored, spoiling our moods.

In a study, people who spent time outdoors in warm weather were happier than those who spent all day inside. The former (前者) got better scores in running tests.

The best temperature for people is about 22.2℃. To improve moods, a person must spend at least 30 minutes outside in warm weather. Spending time indoors when the weather outside is so nice tends to (趋向) lower moods. It’s mostly because we don’t like to be inside when spring arrives. It is possible that inside activities seem boring.

Maybe the activities connected with being outside influence our moods. Warm weather makes us happier. Warm weather is connected with the beach, fun outdoor sports, happy people and so on. It brings back childhood memories of playing outside all day.

Of course, we can wake up every day and decide how we’ll feel that day. If it’s rainy that won’t necessarily make us unhappy. We’ll just have to bring our umbrellas out and cheer up those who are feeling sad!

Choose the best choice from A, B or C according to what you read.

【1】What influence does hot weather give to us?

    A.Adding more pressure.

    B.Improving our moods and memory.

C.Making us feel more tired and bored.

【2】What does the underlined word “spoiling” mean in Chinese?

    A.破坏

    B.改善

    C.发现

【3】Why does warm weather make us happier?

A.Because we like spending time inside in warm weather.

B.Because warm weather is connected with outdoor activities.

C.Because outdoor activities can only be done in warm weather.

【4】What’s the writer’s opinion according to the last paragraph?

    A.We should wake up early.

    B.Rainy days make us unhappy.

C.Our moods are mainly decided by ourselves.

【5】What’s the best title for the passage?

    A.Rainy Days Make Us Sad

B.How the Weather Influences Our Moods

    C.The Best Temperature for Humans
