  • 25、The Tianchi Meteorological Station is one of China’s best weather stations. It was really difficult to set up and develop this station.

The Tianchi station is at an altitude (海拔) of about 2,620 meters and is about 150 meters away from Tianchi Lake on the top of Changbai Mountain. Weather workers there not only enjoy wonderful sights, but also work under terrible weather conditions.

The average temperature there is -7.3℃ with the lowest of -44.0℃. Every year, there are strong winds in about 269 days with some up to 74 kilometers per hour. Snow can be seen in about 250 days. And there are 56 days of thunderstorms.

The station was set up in 1958 to improve weather information collection. These days, workers also need to pay attention to the effects of climate change and protect the wildlife in Changbai Mountain. Workers stay at the station from June to September. In other months, they check the equipment to keep everything in working order.

Since the station was set up, many workers have done their part in collecting weather information from Changbai Mountain. Jiao Xiangzhao, 53, is one of them. He has worked there for 24 years. He still remembers his first day of work.“Because of the heavy snow, the car we took had to stop when we were one-third of the way to the station. We took four hours to get to the mountain top with heavy bags,” he said.

Over the past years, conditions have improved a lot. Since 2010, new equipment has been used at the station. In 2016, a new building of 1,000 m² was built. Workers could work more safely there.

  • 26、For me, one of the greatest pleasures in life is going to watch a great film at the cinema. It’s a chance for me to get away from real life. There’s nothing better than being lost in a story unless, of course, someone decides to break down the moment.

Whether at a cinema or a huge theater, someone usually decides to treat the place like their own home! There is an accepted way of behaving at the cinema which some people don’t seem to understand.

To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surround-sound effects, someone begins to enjoy their drinks and popcorn and thus makes a lot of noises. And what I can’t stand most is people who decide to chat to their friends, sometimes not even about the film.

I’m not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo, a film critic (评论家) at the BBC, experienced a “new low” during a film. He says, “The woman in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used the light on it to allow her to do her make-up!”

Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should behave at the cinema. One of them is no use of mobile phones, and another is not to take your shoes off—a most serious offence (冒犯).

Of course, when we have paid for a ticket, we feel it is our right to relax and enjoy the film in the way we want to, but we mustn’t forget our fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematic experience, too.

The best choice for anyone wanting to break the rules of cinema manners is to get a DVD and watch it at home. But we all know that the best way to enjoy the art of cinematography is on the big screen. It’s your choice!

What about you? What annoys you about other people at the cinema?

【1】Why does the writer enjoy going to the cinema?

A.It makes him feel like being at home.

B.It gives him a moment to stay away from real life.

C.He prefers watching the films on big screens.

D.He wants to enjoy the cinematic experience.

【2】What can’t the writer stand most at a cinema?

    A.Chatting to their friends.

    B.Turning up late.

    C.Eating popcorn.

    D.Having drinks.

【3】What is considered by Simon to be the rudest at a cinema?

    A.Using mobile phones.

    B.Chatting to their friends.

    C.Taking the shoes off.

    D.Having drinks and eating popcorn.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Popular Cinemas

    B.A Serious Problem

    C.Cinema Manners

    D.An Unpleasant Experience

  • 27、Dear Alice,

You really have two different questions here, so well discuss one of them at a time.

Your problems at school may be a result of a number of things. You dont say much about how these classmates get along with each other. Its possible that all the students are feeling a little cautious (谨慎的) in the first term.

Its also possible that the others are unkind. If this is so, you have to find out why you are the class outsider.

In your letter you say you often offer to help others with their work. Is it possible that your classmates dont understand your offers? Could it seem that you were trying to buy friends with these offers?

Is it possible that you took no notice of your classmates when you had your good friend near you? They may have felt hurt at that time. It may take a time for them to believe in you if so. Try to ask one classmate directly what the problem is. If you hear a negative (负面的) answer, at least youll know what to do.

    Yours truly,

    Shelia

    1Who writes the letter?

    A. Alice     B. her classmate

    C. Shelia   D. her teacher

2 From the letter we know that Alice was very _______________.

    A. lucky     B. unkind C. fair   D. unhappy

3 In the letter Sheila talked about _________ possible reasons for Alices problems.

    A. four     B. six   C. seven D. eight

4From the letter we can conclude (得出结论) that _______________.

    A. Alice wasnt pleased with her teachers.

    B. Alices parents made her study too hard.

    C. Alice didnt get along well with her classmates.

    D. Alice didnt want to go to school any more.

六、完型填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 29、In 1965, 17-year-old high school student Randy Gardner stayed awake for 264 hours to see how to deal with sleeplessness. On the second day, his eyes stopped focusing. Next, he lost the ability to ___________ objects by touch. By day three, Gardner was moody and not controlled. At the end of the experiment, he had problems with short-term memory and started hallucinating (幻觉). Although Gardner recovered without ___________ during the recovery process, for others, sleeplessness can cause hormone (激素) imbalance, illness, and even death. When we lose sleep, mood, and reaction time are affected. It will also cause more diseases.

Why does sleeplessness become such a great pain? Scientists think the answer lies with the gathering of waste products in the brain. During our waking hours, our cells are busy ___________ our day’s energy sources, which get broken down into various by-products, including adenosine (腺苷酸). As adenosine builds up, it increases the strong desire to sleep, also known as sleep pressure. In fact, caffeine works by ___________ adenosine’s chemical pathways. Other waste products also build up in the brain, and if they are not cleared away, they can overload the brain and are thought to lead to the many negative symptoms of sleep loss.

So, what’s happening in our brain when we sleep to prevent this? Scientists found something called the Lymphatic System, a clean-up mechanism (机能) that removes this build up and is much more ________ when we’re asleep. And they may also play a role in ________ the brain’s daily waste products. Scientists are still exploring how to recover form sleeplessness. We can be sure that sleeping is essential if we want to stay mentally and physically healthy.
