24、It seems that there’s a good reason why dogs are always seen as man’s best friend. Scientists have found that dogs are the only animals that can read emotion(情感)in faces much like humans. The finding suggests that like an understanding friend, dogs can see if we are happy, sad, pleased or angry.
When humans look at a new face, their eyes usually look across the left, falling on the right hand side of the person’s face first. A possible reason for this is that the right side of the human face is better at expressing emotions.
Scientists have now shown that pet dogs also have “left gaze bias(左视偏好)”, but only when looking at human faces. No other animal has been known to do like this before. Dr. Kun Guo with his team showed 17 dogs the pictures of human, dog and monkey faces as well as something else. The dogs’ eyes and heads show a strong left gaze bias when the animals see human faces. But this did not happen when they were shown other pictures, including those of dogs.
Guo suggests that over thousands of years living with humans, dogs may have developed the left gaze bias as a way to guess our emotions.
“Recent studies show that the right side of our faces can express emotions better than the left. If true, then it makes sense for dogs and humans to see the right hand side of a face first.”
【1】Why are dogs seen as man’s best friend according to the passage?
A. Because dogs are the closest animals to humans.
B. Because dogs can read the emotions in humans’ faces easily.

【2】The dogs’ left gaze bias helps them _______.
A. get along well with humans
B. express emotions quickly
C. have more understanding friends
D. remember more new faces
【3】The passage mainly wants to tell us that _______.
A. dogs have been man’s best friends for thousands of years
B. humans have a “left gaze bias”
C. the “left gaze bias” works on all animals

25、 When you watch TV and play video games you make global(全球的)warming worse! It may seem hard to believe, but when electricity is made, so are greenhouse gases(温室气体). This means that every time you use electricity you help make global warming worse!
Cars are also making global warming worse. They burn fossil fuels(化石燃料)in their engines, and send lots of greenhouse gases into the air.2-1-c-n-j-y
Global warming may be a big problem, but we can all help stop it. People can try to drive their cars less. Or even get ones that run on sunlight! You can also help. Let’s try one of these top ideas:
(1)Try to use less electricity. Turn off lights, your television, and your computer when you’ve stopped using them. To make electricity, fossil fuels are burned in big factories. But burning fossil fuels also makes greenhouse gases. You should also try to watch less TV.
(2)Plant trees. Not only is it a fun thing to do, but it is also a great way to lower the number of greenhouse gases in the air. Trees take carbon dioxide out of the air when they grow.
(3)Don’t throw away your rubbish, try to recycle it. If rubbish is not recycled, it is put in the ground. There it rots(腐烂)and makes a greenhouse gas called methane(甲烷).So try to recycle cans, bottles, plastic bags and newspapers. It’ll make you feel great! And it’ll help the Earth.
【1】 If we ___________, we may make global warming worse.
A. use less electricity B. drive a car on sunlight
C. plant trees D. throw away rubbish

26、What time of day do you feel most alert (清醒的)? Are you more of a morning person? Or does your brain need a few hours to get going? A lot of research suggests that we should pay attention to our body clock. It can tell us what time of day we are best able to perform, according to the Wall Street Journal (华尔街日报).
When it comes to the human brain, many people work best later in the morning. This is because the body’s temperature takes time to rise through the day. Taking a warm shower when you wake up can help speed this up.
But everyone’s body clock is different. Morning people will rise early and work better early in the day. Evening people will wake later but their brain will work better toward the end of the day.
Research shows that we’re better at some activities at certain times of the day. Physical performance is at its best between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., so it’s better to exercise later in the day.
Between noon and 4 p.m., people begin to get distracted (思想不集中的). This is partly because our brain becomes less alert after we eat a big meal. Research also shows that we become sleepy around 2 p.m..
Finally, it is best to eat during our active periods. This allows our body to burn calories better and stops our blood sugar levels from getting too high.
【1】Many people perform best later in the morning because ________.
A.they can’t get up very early
B.they have to take a shower first
C.the body’s temperature needs time to rise
D.that’s when the brain wakes up

C.rise early and work in the morning.
D.wake later and work after midnight

A.It’s better to do exercise in the afternoon.
B.We perform better after eating a big meal.
C.Sleeping at 2 p.m. is not good for our health.

B.The best time to do things
C.Different periods of a day
D.Brain activities at different places
