24、On May 23, 1989, Stefania Follini came out from a cave at Carlsbad, New Mexico. She hadn't seen the sun for eighteen and a half weeks. Stefania was in a research program, and the scientists in the program were studying body rhythms. In this experiment Stefania had spent 130 days in a cave, 30 feet in depth.
During her time in the cave, Stefarua had been completely alone except for two white mice. Her living place had been very comfortable, but there had been nothing to tell her the time. She'd had no clocks or watches, no television or radio. There had been no natural light and the temperature had always been kept at 21℃.
The results were very interesting. Stefania had been in the cave for over four months, but she thought she had been there for only two. Her body clock had changed. She hadn't kept to a 24-hour day, she had stayed awake for 20-25 hours and then had slept for 10 hours. She had eaten fewer meals and had lost 171bs in weight as a results! She had also become rather depressed (抑郁) .
How had she spent her time in the cave? As part of the experiment she'd done some physical and mental tests. She'd recorded her daily activities and the results of the tests on a computer. This computer had been specially programmed for the project. Whenever she was free, she'd played cards, read books and listened to music. She'd also learned French from tapes.
The experiment showed that our body clocks are affected by light and temperature. For example, the pattern of day and night makes us wake up and go to sleep. However, people are affected in different ways. Some people wake up naturally at 5:00 am, but others don't start to wake up till 9:00 or 10:00 am. This affects the whole daily rhythm. As a result, the early risers, on the other hand, are tired during the day and only come to life in the afternoon or evening!
【1】Stefania stayed in the cave for a long time because_______.
A. she was asked to do research on mice
B. she wanted to experience loneliness
C. she was the subject of a study
D. she needed to record her life
【2】What is a cause for the change of Stefania's body clock?
A. Eating fewer meals.
B. Having more hours of sleep.
C. Lacking physical exercise.
D. Getting no natural light.
【3】Where does the text probably come from?
A. A novel. B. A news story.
C. A pet magazine. D. A travel guide.
25、Know when to skim. Skimming can be used to gain a shallow (浅层的) understanding of a text. It can be used to scan a newspaper for interesting material or to get the important concepts out of a textbook in preparation for a test. It’s not a good choice for thorough reading.
Read titles and section headings. Begin by only reading the chapter titles and any subheadings at the start of large sections. Read the headlines of each newspaper article or the table of contents in a magazine.
Read the beginning and end of a section. Textbooks usually have introductions and summaries of each chapter. For other texts, just read the first and last paragraph of a chapter or an article.
You can read quickly if you’re familiar with the subject, but don’t try to speed read as fast as possible. You’re saving time by skipping most of the section, but you do need to understand what you’re reading.
Circle important words throughout the text. If you still wish to learn more, brush your eyes rapidly across the page rather than reading normally. As you know the main idea of the section, you can pick out key words that mark important areas. Stop and circle the following words:
Words that are repeated several times
The main ideas—often including words from the title or section header
Proper nouns
Italics, bold text, or underline
Words you don’t recognize
Pay attention to pictures and diagrams ( 图表). These often present a lot a information without much reading required. Take a minute or two to make sure you fully understand each diagram.
Read the first sentence of each paragraph, if unsure. If you are uncertain about the subject, read the start of each paragraph. The first one or two sentences will teach you the main points.
Study using your annotations ( 注解). Go back and look over the words you’ve circled. Can you “read” these and get a general sense of what the text is about? If you don’t understand a certain word, try reading a few sentences around that word to remind yourself of the topic.
【1】Where can you find this article?
A.In the newspaper.
B.In a magazine.
C.In a language book.
D.In a diary.
【2】Which of the following is NOT advised by the writer of the article?
A.Skimming isn’t suitable for all types of reading.
B.You can read as quickly as you want if you know how to skim.
C.Spend some minutes reading the pictures and diagrams in the text.
D.If you can not remember the subject you are reading, try to read the start of each paragraph.
【3】When you read the part of one article below, which word or phrase should be possibly circled?
Whenever you meet any difficulty in life, please stick to your dream. Never give up. Most people may find it hard to stick to their dream in the past once they are caught in trouble. However, they always end up regretting (后悔) the decisions they have made after they walk out of the difficulty and hope they could stick to the dream. |
A.always
B.give up
C.stick to
D.hard
【4】What should be used as the best title for the article?
A.How to learn speed reading
B.Skim the text
C.Skimming and scanning, two powerful reading strategies
D.Read the start and the end of the article
26、How do you like your school? Here are some letters written by some students.
Luke, 14, from Jiangsu I will give some suggestions about our school uniforms. In our school, we students have to wear uniforms every day. But the blue, black and green sports suit looks really dark and old. It can’t stand for young and lively spirit. We can add some red or orange colors and make a new type of uniform. Danny, 13, from Zhejiang I have two suggestions for my headmaster. First of all, I think we should have more hobby classes in science, such as model plane making classes and computer programming classes. It is really boring to study basic subjects all the time. And second, I hope we can have more PE lessons or more time for physical exercise. Helen, 15, from Shandong In the letter I wrote to the headmaster, I want to talk about the responsibility (责任) of personal classes. Now many middle schools are trying the “personal class” system. Students don’t have regular (固定的) classes. They can choose lessons they want to take. And it is also good for exercise. We don’t have to stay in one classroom all the time. |
【1】What color may Luke think can stand for young and lively spirit?
A.Red and orange.
B.Blue and Black.
C.Red and Blue.
D.Orange and green.
【2】What does Danny think is boring?

B.Studying basic subjects all the time.
C.Doing physical exercise every day.
D.Making model planes with friends.
【3】What is Helen’s suggestion about?
A.School uniforms.
B.Hobby classes.

27、Smoking is harmful. But as soon as you stop the habit, everything will be OK, right? Wrong.
New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done to your genes (基因) will stay there for a much longer time. In the research, a team of US scientists studied the blood of 16,000 people. Among them, some were smokers, some used to smoke, and the rest were non-smokers. Scientists compared their genes and found that more than 7,000 genes of smokers had changed—a number that is one-third of known human genes.
According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer (癌症) are caused by genetic changes. Some people may have had the genetic changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day-to-day lives while doing things like smoking.
When you stop smoking, a lot of these genes will return to normal within five years. This means your body is trying to heal itself of the harmful effects of smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as long as 30 years. It’s almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement (水泥)—it will always be there, even when you’ve walked away and when the cement becomes dry.
Although the study results may make people unhappy, there is a bright side: the findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.
【1】According to the passage, how many genes of smokers had changed?
A.16,000.
B.Over 7,000.
C.Over 21,000.

【3】The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to _______.

C.the harmful effect
【4】What may happen to the damaged genes when you stop smoking according to Paragraph 4?
A.Few of these genes will return to normal within five years.
B.The changes in some of the genes will stay for a long time.
C.They will walk away and become dry.
【5】Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The people in the research are smokers or those who used to smoke.
