21、Zhang Boxing was a public official during the Qing Dynasty. He was famous because he was clean and free of corruption（腐败）. Emperor Kangxi even praised（表扬）him for this.
When Zhang worked in Fujian, many people tried to give him lots of money and expensive gifts. To refuse them, Zhang wrote a notice and put it up on the doors of his house and office. It said that even a penny is the result of people’s blood and sweat（血汗）. If he took it, he would not be worth nothing. Seeing his notice, the bribers didn’t visit him anymore.
Zhang was not only clean from corruption, but also served people with his heart. He opened barns（仓库）and gave food to people in hunger. Some officials didn’t understand his decision. He asked, “Full barns or the lives of people; which is more important?”
Being clean and free of corruption has long been promoted（推崇）in Chinese history. It’s said that the Chinese phrase lianjie, which means incorruptible, first appeared in The Songs of Chu by the great poet Qu Yuan. Qu was perhaps the earliest person to promote and practice this idea. Bao Zheng was such an official in the Song Dynasty.
Officials today still need this clean and incorruptible attitude. Corruption is not only bad for officials’ own reputations but might get the government to lose people’s trust. In 2014, President Xi Jinping used Zhang’s story to ask officials to stay away from corruption.
