二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、A flood can develop slowly, over time or rapidly, as in the case of flash floods which can develop in just a few minutes and without signs of rain.

【1】 This is the first thing that a person should do. It is unwise to just depend on history to decide whether your area is at risk of flooding.

Create an evacuation plan in case you have to evacuate your home. Pay attention to the safe areas you can go to. Prepare food kits for natural disasters that you can easily take with you if you have to leave your house. 【2】

If there is a possibility of a flash flood, leave your home and move to higher ground at once. Do not wait for instructions to move. Evacuation may also cause a shortage in the food supply. 【3】 To survive, one must depend on food storage.

While evacuating, avoid walking through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. 【4】

Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon (舍弃) the car and move to higher ground, when water is not moving or not more than a few inches deep. 【5】 If your car is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay in the car. If the water is rising inside the car, move on to the roof (顶部).

A.They don’t know where to look for shelter.

B.You and the car can be swept away quickly.

C.Use a stick to check the ground in front of you.

D.Be aware if the area you’re at is at risk of a flood.

E.There is no telling when another flood may happen.

F.It would help to store food for emergency situations.

G.During these conditions, hunger becomes a very real problem.

  • 28、   Is there someone that has always been there for you and supports you in times of need? For many people, their parents are the first ones that come to mind. Our parents are often the first and biggest sources of love and support.

You may not have thought about it much, but parents often sacrifice a lot to be able to provide so much for their children. For example, many parents have given up their dreams to make sure they could provide for their children. Whether it is their time, money or energy, parents often do whatever it takes to make sure they give their children the best they can offer.

Just take a look at Canadian-American actor Jim Carrey. Although he is a famous comedian and has been in dozens of movies, he still takes the time to appreciate the sacrifices his parents made to make sure he could make his dreams a reality. “My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible for him, so instead he got ajob asa salesman,” Carrey said in a video posted by Daily Mail. “When I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job. Our family had to do whatever we could to survive.” At the time, Carrey understood his father's sacrifice.

What are some things that you’ve noticed that your parents or loved ones have done to support you and your dreams? What are some things that you’ve done to help someone else in return?

It’s important to take some time to reflect upon the positive impact people have had on your life. So, if you realize that someone has helped you in a big—or even a little—way, be sure to let them know. I’m sure they will be happy to know that they have made the world a brighter place.

    A.They hardly enjoy their lives.

B.They try their best to earn money.

C.They work hard for their own dreams.

D.They usually give their kids the biggest support.

【2】What can we learn about Jim Carrey?

A.He’s grateful for his parents’ sacrifices.

B.He spent a lot of time with his parents.

C.He persuaded his father to be a comedian.

D.He was ashamed of his father’s unemployment.

【3】What does the author intend to do in the fourth paragraph?

    A.Show his judgment.

    B.Introduce a new topic.

    C.Make the readers reflect.

    D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

【4】What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?

A.To take a positive attitude towards our life.

B.To realize the importance of sharing our thoughts.

C.To work together to make the world a brighter place.

D.Toexpress our appreciation to those who have helped us.

  • 29、   In the northern part of Austin there once lived an honest family by the name of Smothers. The family had John Smothers, his wife and their five-year-old daughter.

One night after supper the little girl was ill with a serious stomachache, and John Smothers hurried downtown to get some medicine. He never came back. The mother was very sad over her husband's disappearance, and it was nearly three months before she married again, and moved to San Antonio. The little girl recovered and in time grew up to womanhood. After a few years had rolled around, the little girl also married in time, and she also had a little girl of five years. She still lived in the same house where they dwelt when her father had left and never returned.

By an unbelievable coincidence her little girl was taken with the same stomachache on the same night of the disappearance of John Smothers, who would now have been her grandfather if he had been alive. “I will go downtown and get some medicine for her,” said John Smith(for it was he whom she had married). “No, no, dear John,” cried his wife. “You, too, might disappear forever, and then forget to come back.” So John Smith did not go, and together they sat by the bedside of little Pansy. After a little while Pansy seemed to grow worse, and John Smith again wanted to go for medicine, but his wife would not let him.

Just then, the door suddenly opened and an old man with long white hair entered the room. “Hello, here is grandpa,” said Pansy. She had recognized him before any of the others. The old man drew a bottle of medicine from his pocket and gave Pansy a spoonful. She got well immediately. “I was a little late,” said John Smothers, “as I waited for a street car.”

【1】What happened after John Smothers disappeared?

    A.His daughter took some medicine.

B.His wife left for San Antonio.
