22、For years, David James, who studies insects at Washington State University, had wanted to examine the migration (迁徙)patterns of West Coast monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarchs tagged (打标签)by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely. Knowing the route is vital to conservation efforts, but James had no way to figure it out- until he got a phone call from Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
The prison was looking for new activities to improve the mental health of those serving long-term sentences. So James began working with prisoners to raise monarchs through the whole process of their transformation. The adult insects were then tagged and released from the prison. Over five years, nearly 10, 000 monarchs flew from the facility. Elsewhere in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, researchers released another few thousand.
The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay.
The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. “They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies, ”James says. Watching the monarch change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed, ” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too. ”

23、 Pycnandra acuminate (喜树) is a rare tree native to New Caledonia that has the rare ability to collect heavy metals like nickel (镍) from the ground. The liquid circulated in its body is blue-green and reportedly contains up to 25% nickel.
In general, trees and heavy metals like nickel don’t really go well together. But Pycnandra acuminata make them live together. And that’s what makes Pycnandra acuminata so special. It sucks out normally poisonous levels of heavy metals from the soil and store them in its trunk, leaves and seeds.
The evolution of Pycnandra acuminate is believed to have occurred over millions of years, but scientists have yet to identify a universal principle of nickel intake and storage. The reason why such trees have formed the way of absorbing metals is also up for debate.
The most popular theory states that the concentration of nickel protects such trees from leaf-chewing insects. And studies have shown that nickel accumulated by these trees indeed harms many insects though some have developed a high tolerance to it. Another theory says nickel has effects of resisting bacteria, which protects the trees from various diseases. However, these theories are all just theories.
One thing that has been proven is the ability of Pycnandra acurninata to clean the soil with poisonous materials caused by human activity. There’s also clear potential for collecting heavy materials like nickel in these kinds of soils that will bring a few profits by conventional ways of mining. People can collect minerals contained in such soils from the blue-green trees。
Unfortunately, Pycnandra acuminata is is recently in a bad situation. Human activity in forests of New Caledonia has made Pycnandra acuminata in danger. Consequently, probably fewer than several hundred trees of this kind have remained as a result of the reduction of our forests.
【1】What do we know about Pycnandra acuminata?
A.It has a blue-green color due to metals collected.
B.It is able to collect some heavy metals from the ground.
C.It sucks out a great deal of poisonous underground water.
D.It tends to grow in the soil with plenty of poisonous liquid.
【2】What do the theories in paragraph 4 say about Pycnandra acuminata?
A.It indeed protects many insects.
B.It stores most nickel in its roots.
C.It protects itself through the concentration of nickel.
D.It makes its surrounding plants suffer from diseases.
【3】What does the author mainly want to express in the last paragraph?
A.Pycnandra acuminata is in danger.
B.Forests are to blame for the reduction of trees.
C.Forests are decreasing as a result of human activity.
D.Pycnandra acuminata is under the protection of people.
【4】In which section of a magazine is this next most likely to appear?

24、2022 Earthshot Prize Winners
The Earthshot Prize is a 10-year project by Britain government that aims to find solutions to the biggest environmental problems the planet faces. The hope is that those solutions can be shared and repeated around the world. Every year, four prizes are awarded and each prize-winner wins $1. 2 million for their efforts.

The company is already working with 1, 000 farmers across India Kheytihopes to get its greenhouses to 50, 000 farmers by 2027. Clean Our Air Charlot Magayi won the prize for cleaning the air. After her daughter was burned by a charcoal-burning stove, Ms. Magayi developed a safer, cleaner stove, called the Mukuru Clean Stove. Ms. Magayi’s stoves use a different fuel that’s cheaper and pollutes far less than charcoal stoves. Currently. over 200, 000 Mukuru Clean Stoves are being used in Kenya. In three years, Ms. Magayi hopes to increase that number to 1 million.
Revive Our Oceans
The Revive Our Oceans prize was won by the Queensland Indigenous Women Rangers Network (QIWRN). Over the last four years, QIWRN has trained 60 indigenous women to help protect the environment. The women learned to use modern tools like drones. They also shared important history of Australia and information that’s been passed down for years among their people.
Build a Waste-Free World
A London-based company called Notpla (for “Not Plastic”) won the prize for building a waste-free world. Their plastic substitute is made from seaweed, and breaks down naturally with no microplastics. In 2022 alone, the company has made one million Notpla take away food boxes, replacing similar plastic-coated boxes. By 2025, the company hopes to increase that number to 25 million.
