So, what are they doing?

2 - the numbers on the front of the trains, or the make and model of the "locomotive (火车头)" -the part of the train which pulls all the other part. In the same way that some people collect toys or stamps, these men collect and exchange all kinds of details about trains and railways.

The idea goes back as far as 1942. That year, a young man named Ian Allan was working at Waterloo railway station in London.3, and quite a lot of the questions he received were very similar. He found himself getting a little annoyed at sending the sine replies to the same questions .so he had a word with him boss. He asked if he could write a brochure giving the answers to the most frequently asked questions. His boss said if he wanted to waste his time on such a project, that'OK.4.So he did. The brochure he wrote was the earliest version of the FAQs (常见问题) you see on websites nowadays.

The first 2,000 copies were all sold in days, and by the 1950s, a million copies of British Railways Locomotives were selling every year. Ian Allan went to become a successful publisher, and got an Order of the British Empire(OBE,大英帝国勋章) from the Queen in 1995.5.

  • 22、The Best Way to Nap

A study published in the journal Heart found a link between healthy napping (打盹) and a lowered risk of heart disease. The American Psychological Association points out that naps can improve memory, learning capacity and mood. Sara Med nick,PhD,a neuroscience at the University of California explains that when you fall asleep, your body moves through stages that each play a role in health. Ideal napping times are based around this four-stage cycle.

    Stage 1

    the“dozing off”(打瞌睡)period

    Stage 2

muscles, heart rate and brain activity slow down

    Stage 3

    deep, restorative sleep

    Stage 4

REM(rapid eye movement)sleep, when brain activity increases and you’re most likely to dream

    The 20-minute nap

Between 20 and 30 minutes is one napping sweet spot, according to Mednick, who explains that you get enough Stage 2 sleep to switch your body and mind into full relaxation mode, aiding with memory.

    The 60-minute nap

Stage 3 sleep is a time for your body to repair tissue, strengthen the immune(免疫)system and recharge energy stores. But waking up during this phase can make you feel uncomfortable and sleepy,Med nick says. Most people start to move out of Stage 3 after around 60 minutes, which makes it a good time to set your alarm.

    The 90-minute nap

A complete sleep cycle is about an hour and a half, and napping for a full cycle can have big benefits. But naps longer than 90 minutes can disturb nighttime sleep and might even weaken memory.

Not a regular napper? That’s OK. “Everyone needs to rest, but not everyone necessarily needs to nap,” says Med nick.

【1】During which phase may you have a dream?

    A.Stage1.

    B.Stage2.

    C.Stage3.

    D.Stage 4.

【2】How long may the first 3 stages last?

    A.A quarter.

    B.One hour.

    C.Half an hour.

    D.One and a half hours.

【3】Which section is the text probably taken from in a newspaper?

    A.News

    B.Education.

    C.Lifestyle.

    D.Health.

  • 23、Jewel White, a 15-year-old student, gathers her books and signs herself out of a routine morning math class. She is not leaving school for the day, but is off to try some more challenging equations. This practice is not uncommon at Westmount Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where an unconventional learning approach is prevailing.

Westmount is one of the eight regular schools in the country where students work at their own pace and set their own direction, spending as much or as little time as they need on subjects. Teachers act as advisers. With the classroom teachers’ permission, students can sign out of a class to work on other materials or walk into another class to catch up on another subject. And every two weeks they make plans for their own learning time, with support from their adviser.

At a time when a shrinking student population is causing boards to close schools. Westmount sits at 30 percent overcapacity with 1,500 students. Its bursting number led education officials to consider expanding the program to other locations.

“If students are interested, we are going to do our best to provide that sort of programming,” said Todd White, chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.

When students like Jewel are not in a classroom, they can usually be found in the school’s learning commons, a study area for all students. There are teachers available to help, but generally students are working on their own assignments or projects.

Jewel said Westmount’s self-paced style caught her attention when she was looking at high schools. Westmount is not the school close to her home. She said at elementary school she would often cause trouble in class because she would complete her work early and not have much else to do. “I find this kind of academic environment in Westmount is a lot better for me,” she said. “I like the thought of being able to work faster or slower if needed.”

【1】What does the word “prevailing” underlined in paragraph I mean?

    A.Catching on.

    B.Giving way.

    C.Slowing down.

    D.Causing trouble.

【2】Which of the following words can best describe the school’s learning approach?

    A.Complex but familiar.

    B.Flexible and efficient.

    C.Traditional and common.

    D.Difficult but interesting.

【3】What is Todd White’s attitude to Westmount’s style of learning?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Positive.

    D.Unconcerned.

【4】What did Jewel think of her elementary school?

A.It was a school closest to her home.

B.It provided too much homework for students.

C.Its learning atmosphere was not very satisfying.

D.Its students did not work as fast as Westmount.

  • 24、   Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank and of having nothing to do.

Once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it “What is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversation?”

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy chain (花) would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!” (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually TOOK A WATCH OUT OF ITS WAISTCOAT POCKET, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat pocket, or a watch to take out of it. Burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge.

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

The rabbit hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labeled “ORANGE MARMALADE”, but to her disappointment it was empty; she did not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody, so she managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it.

“Well!” thought Alice to herself, “after such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling down stairs.

How brave they’ll all think of me at home! Why, I wouldn’t say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!” (Which was very likely true.)

Down, down, down. Would the fall NEVER come to an end!

    By LEWIS CARROLL

【1】Which of the following is NOT a reason why Alice ran after the rabbit?

A.Because she heard the rabbit speak to her

B.Because she was tired of sitting there with nothing to do

C.Because she noticed the rabbit had a waistcoat pocket.

D.Because she saw the rabbit take a watch out

    【2】Alices adventure mainly happened________.

    A.in her family garden

    A.disappointed

    B.proud

    C.afraid

    D.relaxed

【4】From which sentence can we judge this is a fairy tale?

A.“I have nothing to do but make a daisy chain.” said Alice.

B.“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” the Rabbit said to itself.

C.“THE ORANGE MARMLADE is empty,” said Alice disappointedly.

D.The hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid.
