二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The year 2020 marks the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”, as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75. One might therefore expect peak retirement for baby-boomers born in 1955-60 in the coming years, but they are not retiring quietly into the background. By continuing to work, and staying socially involved, the yold will change the world, as they have done several times before at different stages of their lives.

The yold are healthier, wealthier and more numerous (众多) than previous generations of seniors. 134million 65-to-74-year-olds account for 11% of the population in rich countries in 2020, up from 99million (8%) in 2000. Health worsens with age, but the yold are resisting the decline better than most: of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy in rich countries between 2000 and 2015. The yold are also better off: between 1989 and 2013, the median (中位的) wealth of families headed by someone over 62 in America rose by 40% , while the wealth of all other age groups declined.

The yold are not just any group of old people. The over-60s are one of the fastest-growing groups of customers of the airline business. They are also changing education. They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as people who wear slippers and look after the grandchildren. That will affect consumer, service and financial markets.

The rise of the yold will be a blessing to themselves, to economies and to societies. But for all this to happen, three big things will have to change. The most important is public attitudes towards older people, and in particular the expectation that 60-somethings ought to be putting their feet up and quietly retiring into the background. Government policies will have to change, too. The retirement age in many rich countries is still below the age to which many people want to work. Public policy makes retirement a cliff edge instead of a ramp (斜坡). Third, higher numbers of healthy yold people will require great changes in health spending although the yold will still be comparative healthy and active over the next decade.

1Why will the yold not retire quietly into the background?

A.They have a longer life expectancy.

B.They are richer than the other age groups.

    C.They have an increasing population.

D.They can still play a vital role in society.

2What are the yold usually expected to do after retirement?

A.To stay at home babysitting grandchildren.

B.To get further education in universities.

C.To travel all over the world by plane.

D.To stay socially engaged in the company.

3What can be done to ensure the position of the yold?

    A.Bringing forward their retirement age.

    B.Being age-friendly towards them.

C.Reducing their cost in health care.

D.Taking good care of them at home.

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Three effective measures should be taken for the yold.

B.People hold different opinions over the yold’s retirement.

C.The yold continue to make a big difference to society.

D.The baby-boomers are changing our society nowadays.

  • 22、   Money can buy happiness. 1What would bring you greater, longer-lasting happiness: purchasing an expensive item you've been eyeing or booking the vacation you've been dreaming about?

2New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them. Over time, the satisfaction with material objects decreased. Even though new cars may make us happy in the short-term, the freshness quickly wears off.

Spending money on experiences-travel, outdoor activities, concerts, classes, movies-brings us more joy than buying material things. One reason is that our experiences are a bigger part of our identity than our possessions. You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things.  3

In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences.

Another reason we value experiences even after they're over is that even negative experiences can become positive over time. 4Why? Because even unpleasant experiences can later become funny stories or be looked at as character-building opportunities.

Shared experiences are also looked upon more favorably because they connect us to others more than shared consumption does. We feel more connected to people who have also backpacked through Europe than people who happen to have purchased the same iPhone. 5

A.But how you spend it matters.

B.Yet they remain separate from you.

C.You could use the material item every day.

D.One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation.

E.Just talking about them made their evaluation improve.

F.Spending money on experiential purchases makes people more generous.

G.If weighing your options, buying experience promises promotion of well-being.

  • 23、Michael Nesmith, the guitarist of the 1960s pop group The Monkees, died at the age of 78. • 24、   Hanging stockings by the chimney with care is one of the most popular Christmas traditions, but many families display theirs without wondering why. No one can be sure when and why the practice started, but some stories give us a clue.

One of the most popular origin tales starts with none other than St. Nicholas — yes, he was a real person. In the third and fourth centuries, St. Nicholas was a bishop in modern-day Turkey who made helping others his life mission, and he caught wind of a family in need.

As the story goes, a single father was raising three daughters but realized he didn’t have enough money to pay their dowries (嫁妆)---and without dowries, they couldn’t get married.

St. Nicholas heard of the family’s dilemma but knew they were too proud to accept handouts. To make sure they didn’t refuse his generosity, he secretly sent them gold at night. Some legends say he dropped gold down the chimney, and the gifts landed in the stockings that were laid by the fire to dry, while others claim Nicholas himself hopped down the chimney. Someone - either the father or the daughters, depending on the version of the tale - caught the bishop in the act and thanked him for his help. The gifts were enough for the daughters to marry and live happily ever after.

St. Nicholas, feast day was on December 6, and eventually, the tradition of leaving gifts in stockings was paired up with Christmas celebrations.

That makes a neat and tidy origin story, but some scholars suggest the stocking tradition might have started even before Christianity in Scandinavian cultures. The Norse god Odin was said to come on Christmas, riding on an eight-legged horse. Children would leave sugar, carrots, and hay in their shoes to feed the mythical horse, and Odin would leave them gifts in return.

We’ll never know whether these stories were true or not, but stockings have a strong foothold in Christmas tradition.

【1】What can we know about St. Nicholas?

A.He was born on December 6.

B.He often sent gold to the poor.

C.He used to hang stocking at night.

D.He liked to help other people.

【2】What does the underlined word "handouts" in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Objects made by hand.

    B.Documents containing news.

C.Pieces of paper given to students.

D.Things given free to poor people.

【3】What is the purpose of the last paragraph but one?

A.To prove the tale of St. Nicholas is false.

B.To provide a different version of story origin.

C.To prove the Norse god Odin is as generous as St. Nicholas.

D.To provide detailed information about western cultures.

【4】What’s the best title of the text?

    A.The story of St. Nicholas

    B.Different practices of gift-giving

    C.Stories behind Christmas stockings

D.The Christmas tradition in modern-day Turkey

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文续写的词数应为150左右。

John began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from other kids. They had two hands. He had one.

“It started when one boy teased him.” said his mother, Judy. Her boy returned to their home with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why?

“He actually told us he was mad at his being born with such a defect,” his mother said. “that was a huge blow to the heart.” Judy admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?

A few weeks later, Judy came home from her job as a science teacher at a state school and turned on the TV to a news story about an eighth grader from Washington, Iowa. Trashaun Willis, then 14, had become an Internet celebrity after posting videos of his slam dunks(灌篮), and, like John, he was missing most of his left arm. Judy called John in. He was silent, watching dunk after monstrous dunk.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for John—he'd see a thriving role model with a seemingly similar physical defect. And had it stayed just that, John would have been happy. Suddenly, an idea occurred to Judy. Why not reach out to the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build John's confidence?

“It reassured me," said Judy. “I know in my heart that everything's going to be OK. Trashaun has grown up to be a wonderful kid. And I know John is too." Trashaun did get serious with John. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later, in April 2017, and they instantly bonded.

    注意:续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
