二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Not long ago I saw the following headline: “An anti-homework trend(趋势)goes global”. The reasoning: It stresses children out and it steals “precious family time”.

Hmm… I wonder. As a teacher, one of the problems I often come across is that students attach far too little importance to their studies, resulting in bad or incomplete work. I also wonder about the “precious family time”. If homework were abolished(废除), would the time freed up be used for reading poetry aloud at the dinner table or having heart-to-heart discussion about the social and political landscape(局面)? In the age of the Internet and games such as Candy Crush Saga, which have absorbed the time and interest of otherwise intelligent adults, I am doubtful.

When I was a kid, homework actually created precious family time. I still remember, after supper, clearing the table and replacing the dishes with my schoolbooks. And then, in swing shifts, my working-class parents would sit down with me and, to the best of their abilities, help me when and where they could.

I have often thought that the homework question could be dealt with if one thought of homework in terms of learning to play a musical instrument. For me, this was the clarinet(单簧管), which I began learning to play at age 9. Every week I took a 30-minute lesson from an old Polish man, Mr. Markiewicz. “Practice an hour a day, and you’ll be playing the clarinet before you know it.” Because my motivation was strong, I did practice an hour a day, and I did learn it in a reasonable amount of time.

Let’s get rid of homework, but only the word “homework”, and replace it with “practice”. As a teacher, it’s all I ask: that my students listen up in the class and then go home to practice, so that when they return to me to show how much they understand, I—and their parents—can be proud of them.

1What might happen in the house with no homework according to the author?

    A.Students will play games.

    B.Students will develop new interest.

C.There will be more precious family time.

D.There will be more arguments among the family.

2What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?

A.Mourn his precious family time’s passing.

    B.Show the powerful parental forces.

    C.Prove the advantage of homework.

D.Describe his uneasy life as a student.

3What does the author suggest students do about the homework?

A.Get rid of it. B.Don’t see it as a load(负担).

C.Take great pride in it. D.Improve their motivation(动机)for it.

4Which is a suitable title for the text?

A.Why to value the family time.

    B.An anti-homework trend begins.

C.How to solve the homework problem.

    D.Developing hobbies can replace homework.

  • 27、   Born in 1918, in the little town of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Katherine Johnson was simply attracted by numbers. As a child, she counted everything. She counted the steps to the road, the steps up to church, the number of dishes she washed …By the time she was 10 years old, she was a high school freshman, which was truly amazing in a time when school for African-Americans normally stopped at eighth grade. To meet her math potential (潜力),her father drove his family 120 miles to Institute, West Virginia, where blacks could continue high school education. Johnson's excellent performance proved her father's decision was the right one: Katherine skipped grades (跳级)to graduate from high school at 14 and from college at 18.

1953, after years as a teacher and later as a stay-at-home mom, she began working for NASA, which began hiring women to measure and calculate the results of wind tunnel (风洞)tests in 1935. In a time before the electronic computers, these women were called "computer". Even after NASA began using electronic computers, the astronaut John Glenn requested that she should personally recheck the calculations made by the new electronic computers before his flight.

She continued to work at NASA until 1986. Her calculations proved critical to the success of the Apollo Moon landing program and the United States' journey into space. Her story was the basis for the 2016 film Hidden Figures.

  • 28、   Having spring around makes you feel different after such a long winter journey. The power  of sunshine brings us a lot of comfort, optimism, self-confidence and of course a smile. Imagine how great it will be if we are so positive all year round!

Living like this is possible if you really think about it. In order to exist in such a state of happiness, we must have sunshine radiating from within ourselves, shining from our  hearts,  minds and souls. Actually, that's your choice, and if you think that way then your own life will reflect that attitude of yours!

In order to make “sunshine” or rather “light” part of our being, it is so important that you watch your thoughts, your words and your actions so that you will accept what you really feel you'd like to create in your own life. Watch your thoughts and really become aware of how many negative thoughts pass through your mind about yourself and other people around you. Watch to see how often you gossip ( ) about other people, which is actually often attached with feelings of jealousy (妒忌) and insecurity(不安全感) about yourself.

You are also supposed to take a close look at your “intention”. How many of you do something for another person without expecting to receive something in return? It might not even have to be a material or physical thing you expect; expecting to be recognized for what you have done is enough to create conditions on your intention. Think about it!

Putting all of these together, it seems that most of us are creating monsters inside us just by simply talking, thinking and not putting our heart out with the right intention towards helping someone else. If you take all your negative attitudes in one hand and measure your need to feel “sunshine” in the other, you will see how both these elements really contradict each other.

Be brave and break your patterns and your habits this spring, and by doing so, you will allow the true sunshine to take place by radiating out from your heart and into your life and the lives of the people around you!

1You can have sunshine shining  from your inside  .

    A. by watching what you think, say and do

    B. by helping someone else

    C. by measuring what you need

    D. by changing your intention

2According to the writer, you don't feel secure about yourself when you  .

    A. expect to be recognized for what you've done

    B. take a close look at your intention

    C. gossip about other people

    D. become aware of your negative thoughts

3What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Breaking our patterns is the most important to get true sunshine.

    B. Expecting something in return for our help isn't the right intention.

    C. If we don't intend to help others, we create monsters inside us.

    D. Negative attitudes have little to do with happiness.

4The passage is written mainly to  .

    A. stress the importance of the positive lifestyle

    B. analyze the intentions and thoughts in our mind

    C. warn us about the bad effects of negative attitudes

    D. offer advice on having sunshine from our inside

  • 29、Tired of standing in line? Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again.

Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to see what you’ve taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some companies are closely copying Amazon’s approach to using Al-powered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve put in them. Customers pay by entering a credit card, or through an online payment system. When a customer exits the store a green light on the shopping cart shows that their order is complete, and they’re charged.

The companies behind the smart carts, including Caper and Veeve, say it’s much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazom’s Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, co-founder of Caper, believes the technology to run Go is too expensive to use in a large-format grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve have said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said, “We’re always happy when Amazon is doing something. They force retailers to get out of their old school thinking.”

Each time a business uses artificial intelligence and cameras, it raises questions about customers’ privacy and the effect on jobs. Beshry notes that the cameras in his shopping cart point down into the cart, so only a customer’s hand and part of their arm will be captured (拍摄) on camera.

【1】What do we know about the smart shopping carts?

A.They are linked to the cameras fixed in the ceilings.

B.They are able to recognize goods put in them.

C.They flash the green light when the order is canceled.

D.They can tell customers where to find what they want.

【2】What does Beshry think of the technology used in Amazon’s Go stores?

A.It is far more expensive than their shopping carts.

B.It is likely to help retailers to think differently.

C.It has attracted many more retailers than before.

D.It may reduce the cost of running a store greatly.

【3】When it comes to AI and cameras, What makes the public worried most?

A.That somebody may know their privacy.

B.That they can only buy goods online.

C.That goods in the stores may be more expensive.

D.That they behave to wait in a line for a longer time.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.The new technology improves retail sale.

B.Smart shopping carts will let you skip the line.

C.Al-powered cameras are used in retail stores.

D.Artificial intelligence affects the future of job market.
