28、 Time, wars and natural disasters have a bad effect on the artistic and cultural objects in the world. More than 1,000 years ago, a fire destroyed the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. In 1755, an earthquake destroyed Ribeira Palace in Lisbon, Portugal, along with artworks inside. In modern times, the Taliban destroyed the huge Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan.
As we all know, museums play an important part in our daily lives. They keep evidence of culture and history and exhibit great works. A major goal of most museums in the world is to make sure that important historical objects do not disappear forever. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, holds 1,250 pieces of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. These objects have inspired artists and historians for many years. So the museum is working to make a complete and permanent(永久的) record of the artworks.
The project is an effort of both the museum and the scientists from Indiana University in the United States. The team is using technology to create digital copies(数字复制品) of the Uffizi’s ancient sculptures.
The process is called photogrammetry. At one time, this process was slow and expensive. But not anymore, said Professor Robert Frischer. He said photogrammetry is now much faster and cheaper. Now they can gather 3-D data(数据) on a life-size sculpture in half an hour and they can process the data just in a couple of hours.
The images allow the viewer to examine the sculpture from all sides. And when the viewer zooms in(用变焦距镜头放大), the image becomes clearer. The Uffizi hopes to have the collection completed and available on the Internet by 2020.
【1】What can we learn about some artworks?
A. They have been badly damaged.
B. They were destroyed by accident.
C. They were not protected by humans.
D. Most of them are kept in Italy now.
【2】Why do the Uffizi Gallery and Indiana University work together?
A. To build the largest museum.
B. To create long-lasting artworks.
C. To introduce some ancient sculptures.
D. To inspire more artists and historians.
【3】What can we learn about photogrammetry?
A. It is still expensive.
B. It is a time-saving step now.
C. It does great harm to the artworks.
D. It was invented by Robert Frischer.
【4】What can we learn about the images?
A. It's impossible to make them larger.
B. They will take the place of real sculptures.
C. People can enjoy them online in the future.
D. They can only show the front of the sculpture.

Best time to visit
The best month for sightseeing in Seoul is during the warm weather between summer and early fall.
Getting around
In Seoul, you have three main forms of transportation: train, subway, and taxi. The fastest option to get around Seoul is the Airport Railroad Express train. It has two options: the express and the all-stop. While the all-stop option is cheaper, it’s about 15 minutes slower than the express.

In Times of Crists, We Need Classical Music
It’s still lying in front of me on my desk. The booklet, entitled Time for Outrange(愤怒) , was written by the 93-year-old French diplomat(外交官) Stephane Hessel. “The power of money,” Hessel says, filled with anger, “has never been as great and selfish and 【1】 as it is now.”
But what does the outrage of this Frenchman have to do with classical music and , ultimately, with me, music director of the Orchestre Symphenique de Montreal(蒙特利尔交响乐团) ?
A lot, I, too, am outraged by the direction of industrial society, with materialism and consumerism leading the way. I want to show that, because of its powerful impact, classical music can play a(n) 【2】 role right now.
We all sense that our society is experiencing an almost revolutionary 【3】. Life is getting faster, competition is fiercer and social cohesion(凝聚力) is reducing. Like most people, I have no idea how liberty and civil rights would develop in the era of globalization and ever-evolving technological advancement.
But I see this as an opportunity for a(n) 【4】 to classical music. The great symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are not museum pieces we should listen to only if we want to 【5】 ourselves with some music history. Now are they a decoration or a relaxation exercise for the quickened pace of life.
They are more than what a radio station for classical music once promised - “your oasis(绿洲) of well-being.” They are timeless compositions that 【6】 all the uncertainties and insecurities of this new period. They can support us in our search for meaning. Beethoven, for example, was convinced that man had the capacity to change for the better and to go throughout life. This is why there is so much hope in his music. His symphonies was mean to 【7】 people forward.
Classic music 【8】 our senses and emotions in such a way that we were thrown back onto ourselves. It 【9】 to listeners to make use of their own reason and reflect on their actions. Music’s sole purpose is to be experienced. That experience, in turn, is why music can change our perceptions(认知) of ourselves and thereby our interactions with others.
【10】 to explain this powerful impact of music will always remain unsatisfying, but this much is certain: aesthetic(审美的) experiences can transform people.

“What are you doing?” you ask.
“I am sawing down a tree,” comes the curt reply.
“How long have you been at it?”
“Four hours so far, but I’m making progress,” he says, sweat dripping form his chin.
“You saw looks very dull,” you say. “Why don’t you take a break and sharpen it?”
