24、“You are what you eat” is a common English saying. It means the food you eat will become part of you. Many experts use it to tell people it’s important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person overweight. To avoid being fat, kids are told to keep off sweet food. However, a team of American scientists have discovered something new about eating sweet food.
“When we say some people ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly to us. Perhaps this word can help us learn more about people’s feelings and acts.”said Brain Meier, a scientist from the study team. “Taste is something we experience(体验) every day. What we have done is to find whether we can know someone’s character and behavior depending on their taste.”
In one of their experiments(实验), college students were asked questions about their characters, for example, they were soft-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food. According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.
In their another experiment, the scientists found that people who preferred sweet food such as cookies and chocolate helped other people in need, but those who ate non-sweet food such as chips weren’t. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more possibly to volunteer to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.
The result of experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food. So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful. Next time, try some ice-cream.

25、 Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out.
Sir John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told he was hopeless in science and finished bottom of his class. However, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Japanese stem cell(干细胞) researcher Shinya Yamanaka.
Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance(坚持不懈) can lead.
At the age of 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in biology and every other science subject. Gurdon's high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was quite ridiculous.
In spite of his teacher's criticism(批评), Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab earlier and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures.
“My own belief is that we will, in the end, understand everything about how cells actually work,” Gurdon said.
In 1962, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic(基因的) information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone(克隆) of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create the sheep Dolly in 1996, the first cloned mammal(哺乳动物) in the world.
In 2006, Gurdon's work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample(样本) of a person's skin can be used to create stem cells. Using this technique, doctors can repair a patient's heart after a heart attack.
“Luck favors the prepared mind,”Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. “Ninety percent of the time things don't work, but when they do, you have to seize (抓住) the chance.”

26、
Most of us spend all day at school or work. After a long and busy day, all we want to do is return to a comfortable home. Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live.
Smart homes have been around for some time. Scottish company Pico Electronics invented a type of technology called X10 in 1975. It allows household devices (家用设备), such as lights and alarms, to communicate with each other by using radio waves (无线电波), according to AVSytemsMag, a specialized magazine in the audiovisual (AV, 视听的) and automation industry.
Of course, 5G network connectivity has made smart homes much more sophisticated (复杂的) than X10. Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant (语音激活助手). Google Home and Amazon's Alexa allow users to interact with nearly any device in their home simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for children and people with physical disabilities, as they can finish tasks that would normally be too difficult, according to How-To Geek.
Common household appliances (家用电器) can become "smart" as well. For example, a smart trash bin can keep track of the things you've thrown away and place an online order for new items, while smart refrigerators can create dinner recipes (菜谱) based on the vegetables that are being kept inside, according to HowStuffWorks.
But it's not just about convenience. Smart homes are also good for the environment. By regularly checking your energy use and automatically (自动地) turning off lights and other devices that you're not using, smart homes can lower how much electricity you use overall. Using less energy means that we use fewer natural resources, which is good for the environment.
【1】X10 technology allows household devices to communicate by ________.
A.using lights
B.using voices
C.using radio waves
D.connecting to a 5G network
【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

【3】According to the passage, which statement is not true?
A.X10 is created by a Scottish company.
B.Smart refrigerators can cook your dinner based on the vegetables you have inside.
C.The voice-activated assistant is more sophisticated smart home technology.
D.A smart trash bin can place an online order for new items.
【4】How are smart homes better for the environment?
A.They use recyclable household appliances.
B.They are built with special materials.
C.They have smart trash bins.
D.They help us save energy.
【5】The article mainly tells us _________.
A.how 5G develops.
B.how to use 5G.
C.how our home is like with the use of 5G.
D.we also can be environmental with the use of 5G.
